1.2. RKP3, for being a decent fangame that was completed and enjoyable...hard to say that for most fangames I've seen.

Bet you can't guess my nominations!
I have a suggestion for another category, best ancient work. The purpose of this category is to give a chance for truly great things to get an award, even if it is years after their forging. One condition exists for this small category, the work must be over three years old.
So if you've lost all hope of ever-getting-nominated maybe there's hope in the ancient works category. If you guys like this idea just remember there's still the three-year wait.
Love can exist past it's due,
1: Programming
1.1: Best Mod of an original Keen game
Norp the Yorp 3, brain da,mag@.12r3 -- shot -- that was already nominated! Hmmm, then Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement.
spatang.com/ck/dl/viewgame.php?a=ddici
1.2: Best Fan-game
Commander Keen in the Dream Machine by DSL.
spatang.com/ck/dl/games/dm1.gif
spatang.com/ck/dl/viewgame.php?a=dm
1.3: Best Editor/Other Keen Program
Dosbox, eheheh, *blush* I know it's strange.
2: Fan Art
2.1: Best Graphical Artwork
Xtraverse for his 3d Keen world maps.
spatang.com/ck/3dck.php
2.2: Best Narrative/Song
Matt / Crazy Dude made a poem about the Keen Community and how it might die late 99. There was a lot of board changing back then and things didn't look good. Most of you probably didn't see it since it was posted in a message board for a Keen website that even at that time was dead, I can't even remember the name.
Do you have that anymore, Matt?
2.3: Best Animation
Manboy's Dopefish animation.
2.4: Best Non-Computerised Art
Everyones Keen Dreams! List them and may the best one win!
Yes, I've lost my mind.
3: Web
3.1: Best Website (judged on content, layout, useability, usefulness, aesthetics...)
Commander Spleens website, which has some Keen stuff there.
jimsoftlair.tripod.com/
3.2: Best Online Entertainment (Javascripts, CGI programs, interactive stuff)
For this category, can I nominate Xtraverse's online BWB game?
3.3: Online Community Service recognition (For those hardworking moderators, website-owners, etc etc etc)
Andrew Durdin.
4.1: Keenest person of the year
Commander Spleen.
4.2: Really Keen Stuff (something great that came out of the blue)
The Commander Keen Modding forum.

Re: 2003 Award Nominations!
i wish i could have made a contribution to 2.4: Best Non-Computerised Art during 2003, but I couldn't scan my Lino Printing of a scene of Bloogville with a one eyed tree watching over it. Well there's always the 2004 Keen Awards. I made it for a Visual Arts project before I went overseas but had no luck scanning it as I have a Printer/Fax/Scanner combo
I hope I can get my teacher to scan it for me! And I hope I can get into film making later this year.
I may get an English and/or Visual Arts film making project, yaay! I'll be in the 10th grade this year, but my computing teacher wants me to do year 11 computing. Yaay!

Sorry, but it is already cancelled.. I started work on some other projects, and cancelled them too. The curren mod now is only missing the sprites, and I'm too lazy to finish them. But don't worry, I won't cancel this!

Well, I reckon the people who truely deserve Keen Awards this year are... Xtraverse, TMST, KeenRush, Ilsoap, Therealdopefish, & Chogall.
I mean, KeenRush probably did the least compared to everybody else there, but I do hope he wins the title of Keenest Person of the Year!
Are we allowed to pick more than one project or each category? Sometimes I can't decide and it really annoys me

I nominate Larry!
Arr. All the nominations I was gonna make have been stolen! Damn you all. So much more thought I must now put in. *dies*
If I find some stuff to fill in the gaps before nominations end, I'll update this post.
1: Programming
1.1: Keen Y
1.2: Commander Keen: Mythical Stones
Ok, so it was a beta, and half of it didn't make sense, and it was made in Klik & Play. But something about it just impressed me somehow.
(RCKP3 had a similar effect, but that's already been nominated).
1.3: Best Editor/Other Keen Program
2: Fan Art
2.1: Ceilick's Sahschret
2.2: Best Narrative/Song
2.3: Best Animation
2.4: Best Non-Computerised Art
3: Web
3.1: KeenVault
Sure, it's deactivated... but I liked the later version while it was up. Otherwise I'd vote in advance for Keengrid.net
3.2: Best Online Entertainment
3.3: KeenRush
For jumping at the chance to comment on anything and everything and his work on the CK Newsletter.
4: Miscellaneous
4.1: Dr. Villain. Ok... maybe not.
4.2: 3D Keen4 Screens
4.3: Ancient Works

"KeenRush has obsessive deleting syndrome"
I know - and I'm always quite fast to decide. And usually things go the way I don't want them to go, and then I'm angry because I've deleted something I would liked to look at later.. One reason to this could of course be the low disk space.. I always feel so frustrated and then just delete the whole thing.. Well, many genius artists had that feature..
I will not let you down next year with creating Keen stuff!

i even deleted bloogville 2 and all it's wavs & bmps i've prepared during 2003. Including a gag of who REALLY beat up Steve Irwin while examining that beautiful dopefish in that Shadowlands 3 spoof. I also done opening credits and some really short scenes. but they're all gone now...

NickSoft, I don't even know why you even bother. I've been interested in downloading your games, but all of them were horrible. Especially the Discontinued Games Anthology, what the hell were you thinking?
At least do mods or STOP using Klik 'n' Play, unless you can make a decent game with it.

also, the for ancient works category, i'm nominating Ilsoap's Rule of a Yorp's Dinner, made late 2000. Man, that game is so old! I guess the older fan games tend to be better than the new ones, ROAYD is almost like a Gameboy Advance game. It would be cool if it was released on GBA though.

K&P isn't a program designed to produce high quality games, so that's not likely.

Re: <nominations>
Hey, now. Whether or not any nomination is worthy of nomination, I'm not going to tolerate any put-downs of other people's nominations. One warning, that's it.
In other news, I'll put all of the nominations in one big happy post in a couple days from now so people can see what and who has been nominated. Everything that's been nominated will be on the list, except for things that can't be nominated. Examples include TMST's Snow Slug for Non-Computerized Art (it won the Keen award last time), and Shadowlands Ep. 1 (it also won last time).
The TED5 Editor is also not a legitimate nomination, because it has been around for over ten years, and was made by the original creators for Commander Keen. That would be like nominating "Commander Keen Dreams" for a Keen award.

If the game sucks, why bother? Just use another engine, do a mod or simply use a better games creator. Or program your own damn game!

Re: <nominations>
er... I didn't intend to imply that nicksoft's games suck. I'm just saying that C&P is a bit of a blotchy tool. The best way to make a truly original game is to program it from scratch. However, that IS a very lengthy endeaver. Click and Play doesn't do the best job, but it does do a job. However... most of the C&P games I've played haven't really passed the mark where I'd sit down and complete them. Nicksoft did a decent job with what he had, though. I apologize if I insulted Nicksoft.

Re: <nominations>
well, I have enjoyed Proton's Revenge, i think i'll actually sit down and play that. Since Commander Keen 2004 is an upgrade, that's okay too. But the rest are awful. I haven't tried Alien Raid games and I haven't tried Duke it out in NY because the link on his site doesn't work. I used to like SKF in the past, although it was buggy, but since i began playing superior fan games, I "developed" a better taste in keen games.

the only decent KNP game i've ever played was CK2000 & CKSO, they were still bad though and could have been better, but they're the best KNP games i've seen relating to CK.

I don't know if it's been done yet, but I believe both Paperface's mod and CheesyDave's mod (Zelda II) deserve nominations for Best Keen Mod.

Re: The nominees so far
this may be a stupid question, but if Keen Awards 2003 is being held in early 2004, when will Keen Awards 2004 be held?

Re: The nominees so far
Too early to say, of course, but probably early 2005. Not that that's unusual, a lot of award shows (Oscars, for instance) have their awards after the time has passed for the period that they're awarding to. This year's Oscars will be for movies from 2003.

adurdin/Ilsoap: Unfortunately, Zeldamod is inelgible for 2003 Keen Awards since it was released 2004. But it will certainly be elgible for next year's awards.

same here KeenRush, I think we should get votin'!
Anyways, who's making the trophies this year? Didn't Manboy make last year's trophies, I'm not sure!
OR... Don't tell me that you'll be using last year's trophies.

Re: The nominees so far
I'd like to nominate funnylandz for best song/narrative (if I'm allowed to nominate more than one). For those of you who don't remember, it's TMST's Remix of They're Coming To Take Me Away.

Has Larry won yet?
Quote: OR... Don't tell me that you'll be using last year's trophies.
Why not use last awards' trophies? Creating some new ones for extra categories would be a good idea (if there's anyone around who still feels up to it--apparently one trophy was lost last year, so we're at least one short, and then there's the new Ancient Works category), but I don't see the need to replace the existing ones.
Besides, if you can lay claim to a number of Keen awards over the years, a standardised collection would be much more satisfying, IMHO.
But, if anyone has some spare time and decides randomly to create some all new 2004 trophies, then we might as well use them--rather than specifically setting out to create more each year because we 'need' them.
Ilsoap offered a similar response when you asked about it last thread:
Quote: As for the awards, why not use last year's? Someone could Photoshop "2003" on them, but most awards shows have standard awards every year. If someone's willing to make new ones, though, I'd be happy to see/hear about it.
Quote: I'd like to nominate funnylandz for best song/narrative
Hahaha. I second, fourteenth and ninth that motion. I was going to nominate it, but I thought it already had been.
Quote: I'm always quite fast to decide. And usually things go the way I don't want them to go, and then I'm angry because I've deleted something I would liked to look at later
I'm still bashing myself over the head with random things for mindlessly reformatting my 166 (or 233... don't remember exactly) continuously about five or six years ago, each time backing up my 'All The Other Stuff' and Klik & Play games folders... except for one. Hiding them on Windows Desktop and C:\KNP\Games wasn't such a grand idea. I had all sorts of wacky stuff. But, I've since made up for the loss with a continuous stream of new stuff, so I can nearly forgive my stupidity.
Quote: K&P isn't a program designed to produce high quality games, so that's not likely
It makes 'decent' games if you're not trying too hard to create a high quality one, though. If you work within the limits of the engine rather than trying to do tricks it can't handle (ie. creating an exact replica of a Commander Keen game engine), it's amazing what you can do.

Sure, I'm not complaining about using last year's trophies, but it's not like the trophies are... 'Engraved' anyway.

Re: Has Larry won yet?
I agree with Ilsoap on this one. Most award shows (ceremonies, etc...) have standardized awards, and I agree that the Keen awards should have a standardized set as well. However, Spleen raises an important point. We do need at least one more award. In order to keep the awards as a set, we will at some point need to create an entirely new set (hopefully with spare trophies, in case of category changes or additions). I think making a new standardized set with spare tropies is the best way to go, but no one has volunteered.
