LOL, that's great :p Short, but sweet. You should consider making it longer! I've always wanted to do something like that, but never really had the time or knowledge to do so...

Length
Thanks guys. I would make it longer, but this has been the most tedious 1.5 seconds of animation I have *ever* made. I've got to get more efficient at this.

If you're interested, here's pretty much how this stuff is done: video (or film) footage is fed into a kind of program called a camera tracker (I had access to a copy of Boujou for this purpose). The tracker software looks for distinct points in the footage (such as the corners of a desk) and attempts to track the motion of those points from frame to frame. It assumes that these points are static, and that the camera is moving (in this case). By analysing the parallax motion of these points, the tracker can work out their position, in 3d space, and the camera motion (parallax; where stuff closer to you proceeds across your field of vision faster than stuff in the distance when you're moving sidewards. I don't think I really need to explain parallax to a bunch of early nineties platform game fans, though :) ).

The camera motion is then exported to a 3d graphics program; 3ds Max in my case. The footage used to track the camera is used as the background image. Invisible, shadow catching objects (often referred to as matte objects) are built to line up with surfaces of objects in the footage (such as the desk and the phone). Place your animated 3d models on these matte objects, light it as close to the conditions in the footage as you can, and when you render you end up with CG sitting pretty in live footage.
