Commander Keen Information
Information on Commander Keen
Wonder what Keen is? It's about time you learn - read this stuff that TSO Ism has written:

The history :: The seven Commander Keen games for PC were written by id Software.

The Invasion of the Vorticons (published by Apogee Software) is composed of the first three episodes: Marooned on Mars, The Earth Explodes, and Keen Must Die. It was released on 14 December 1990.

Goodbye Galaxy (also published by is composed of the fourth and fifth episodes: The Secret of the Oracle and The Armageddon Machine. It was published in June 1991. The CGA version of the game was discontinued in November 1997.

In April 1998, the first five episodes were bundled together on a CD and sold for $49.95.

Episode six is different than the episodes before. It is a stand-alone game named Aliens Ate My Babysitter. It uses the Goodbye Galaxy engine. It was released in 1991. It was distributed by FormGen. Apogee Software merely resold it like any other retailer would. In 1996, FormGen was bought by GT Interactive and stopped distributing the game. The only way to get the game is as part of "The id Anthology," a CD with many id Software products on it. For some obscure reason only the CGA version is available on that CD.

Commander Keen Dreams is the most unique episode. It is a lost episode. It falls between The Invasion of the Vorticons and Goodbye Galaxy in terms of storyline and of technology. Before the people who formed id Software formed id Software, most of them worked at Softdisk, a software publishing company. Before they could leave to form id Software, they were contractually obligated to make one more game for Softdisk. The game they made was Commander Keen Dreams. This game is the only Commander Keen game for PC totally unaffiliated with Apogee Software.

At the end of The Armageddon Machine, there was a screen advertising a new Commander Keen series. The series, titled The Universe is Toast, was abandoned after id Software saw the success of other games of theirs such as Wolfenstein and Doom. There were no more serious plans to make any more Commander Keen games for a long time. In fact, in a secret level in Doom there are four Commander Keens hanging in nooses that you must destroy in order to exit the level. Many people regarded this as id Software's official goodbye and good riddance to Commander Keen.

Then Commander Keen for Gameboy Color was released. If you have any information about this game, please email us.
