Billy Blaze (Keen) invents a new machine called a Photatachyon Transceiver - in English, an instantaneous radio. Point it anywhere in the galaxy, and you pick up radio waves of any type. After several bad alien sitcoms, Commander Keen picks up a scrambled message: "Brrzzz...Giggg...oment of great triumph...Frzzt...ast the Milky Way will be...Huzzzz...terly destroyed...Pyuneeeeee...Can stop us now... We will remake the galaxy in the name of Gannalech. Power to our race! Power to the Shikadi!"
"So, the Shikadi are planning to destroy the galaxy huh?" thinks Billy. "Sounds like a job for... COMMANDER KEEN!
Commander Keen stuns his family (who want him to have dinner), and heads off toward Gnosticus IV. When Keen arrives, a council page runs up to him.
"Oh Captain Keen," he begins.
"That's Commander Keen," Keen corrects.
"The Shikadi were here. They kidnapped eight members of the council and took them to the Shadowlands, far to the west."
"They didn't ?"
"Impossible. They are immortal."
"I'll save 'em," says Keen determinedly.
"But they left all kinds of monsters to guard them, Captain Keen," says the page.
"Then I'll save them CAREFULLY."
The page begins to leave. But Keen yells after him: "And if you call me 'Captain' Keen again, I'll take you with me!"
"Sorry," mumbles the page. He then leaves.
As Keen, you, the player, must save the eight Gnosicene Council members.
