3D Keen4
I'm planning to do a 3Dversion of Keen4. Anyone thinks that is an good idea? The thought about making a 3Dgame popped into my head a few days ago. So expect a 3d in the future. I think it will take a looong time... But it will be fun to do such a big project. :evil Maby I will need some help with texturing and modeling. I can't do everything myself ya now. I use the 3Dgamestudio, so it's kinda cheating. Not the real deal though. :old

Well, all I can say is good luck. You definately have the talents.

BTW, can 3DGamesStudio do cartoon rendering for a game, or would that require far too much processor speed? And can it import .mb, .3ds, and .max?

did you buy 3dgame studio?? or did you get it from a site, if you did, u gotta tell me where you got it, i've been trying to get it for years. if you got the version that can build exes, id say hell make the game!

Yes, kazaa has many nicyspicy things.. Nuff said about kazaa. Is there anyone here who's good att 3dgamestudio's scriptlanguage or modeling 3dmodels? If so, don't be afraid to drop a line or two and we can plan some future cooperation eh? ;) There are just two things I can't decide. Should Keen's skin be white or humancoloured? Should Keen's shirt be purple or red? If the game is going to be made, I will do everything I can to create an very atmospheric game, recreate that nostalgia-Keen-feeling and add some of my own composed music. In other words, I try my best not letting you oldskool-Keeners down! All levels will be my own 3dversions of the levels in Keen4. All the inhabitants of the Shadowlands will be modeled in 3d and the original story will be used... Phew, hope I can get started as soon as I'w got time. I'm pretty excited myself acctually :yorp

another deal is to use blender3d. Its a free program, but if u wanna learn to make games with with u can buy Blender Game kit, only 27,99$. Check at www.blender.org or .com Both works :korath

I've never tried blender, but I heard it was impossible to use. I use Maya and 3DSMax legally :)

I'm thinking about making the models with high polycount, so maby slow cpus won't be able to run this game smooth.
But first of all, I have to learn the gamemakingsoftware some before starting out seriously. Any kind of help is very much apreciated. :rolleyes

I'm in the middle of designing Fribbulus Xax in 3D, but I might be able to help you out on some stuff. I own 3DSMax 3.1, and I have access to 3DSMax 5.1 as well as Maya 4.5 Unlimited at my school.

If I add new things to the game? The levels won't be the same because it's hard to make a 3dplatform (like DukeManhattan) But the the monsters and textures will be there, maby I add some new monsters/levels. :spotkeen

I have good news and bad news. the keen model is coming along well but i cant save files as 3d max files. i can save them as:
IGES, wavefront, auto cad, 3d studio, lightwave, raw triangles, pov-ray mesh, moray mesh, STL, VRML, adobe illustrator, windows metafile, renderman, or Ag files. is this helpful?

i have already made models of keens gun ( as seen in the keen 6 manuel ) and his pogo. you can see them in the cc314 fan art section. the pogo looks kinda weird so i will probably make a different one.

if u need help to get textures i can help ya.
And man, if you could make Keen4 in 3d and with the opitions to change cameras, man, maybe "the universe is toast" can be soon be a reality again. Let's all help you to make the game, like people made Counter-Strike, many people helping. And maybe, Tom Hall can make the last games!

i finished the keen model. he just has spheres as hands though. i have made hands before and they worked for their purpose but i dont think they would work with keen.
im too lazy to figure out how to put the pictures up on the web so if somebody gives me their e-mail i'll send it to them.

I needed help because I can't possibly make all the models my self. Btw, some models will not be that complicated. I will need models of palmtrees, rocks and so on... But thanx anyway, I need all help there is. ;)

Ok, remember guys, the models should not be larger than 800 polys and should be mapped with only one whole texture.
So please use the boxmodeling technique. It's the best way to make a lowpolymodel. If someone here doesn't know what boxmodeling is, I will find a tutorial (for 3dsmax) wich show the whole proccess from modeling to skinning.

First of all: Wow! Looks really nice now!
Oh, and I think the helmet should be a bit big - it is his big brothers one! :)

And about that Keen skin colour - maybe you could make something option where player could select "Keen's skin colour" to "normal" or "white"? That could change the texture of the 3d model, and if that's not possible on fly, then you could just change the texture of the current model, and save it with different name..

Also, the palm tree is very nice - it remainds me of the one in Keen, and the ones I have in legos. No, I don't play with them anymore.. Though sometimes I would want to.. :)

I'm doing this cause I want to show my apreciation to ID and all the Keengames. I'm a huge fan of Keen and I know what to do to bring the Keen atmosphere into the game. If I succed, who knows... :confused

WTF why would it? Tom Hall even wanted to make a 3d Keen game. And the publishers of Rayman suceeded in making a good 3d game of the old platform version. Much people will be interested. DSL you have done a good job so far I'd love to see more. Are You btf going to make a remake of the original Keen games or an entire new episode.

If u need help to make the levels i can design some. I did a few maps to Quake, Half-Life and Counter-Strike so I know how to work with 3D Landscaping Tools. I prefer Hammer from Valve Software to make levels. It sabes in .map and .rmk mode. But you need .wad compressed files for textures. ;)

man, why creating a whole engine and textures at 3D Game Studio? Half-Life is tottallly modified, so you can use it 3D plataform and make a Keen game on it base. You just need to change the models, levels, and the entinities that make HL like that and create another game. Like Blue-Shift, etc. There are tutorials at internet of how to do it and programs too. Try looking at Fileplanet.com or Google. Okay? It's better because Half-Life already has an good IA system to monsters!

Yeah man! HL mod! That's the good deal. If you're going to make really at HL, you will need modals at .mdl format, if you need any tools I can provide you all them. From sprites to programming. I used to make maps but i can go back to work to help ya just to revive keen! Maybe keen is coming back at x-mas of 2003 :christmas

sure! but my cpu is going through a major upgrade so I won't be working on it for a while.
Right now there is much to do (caracter movement and stuff) and I'm sorry to say but I think I have to give up the pogo.. :pogo :( It's to complicated for me to make such a thing (and would it really be so nice to have it in a fps?)

BTW: dsl if you choose to ignore this, & want to go ahead with your proposed 3d version of commander keen 4, u would probally have to get permission from 3d realms or iD to do this, cos it is still copyrighted

If you see all of those unofficial games they have today..I don't think think they have asked for permission at ID for those. I think we should let him try to make a nice 3d version of Keen, if its no succes...ok too bad. But if it is we have a nice sequel (or remake of keen 4). There's nothing wrong with that or is it?

My plan...
Man, with this, we are going to revive KEEN! My idea for this project:
-Develop all the plataform engine (if its on HL mod it need to be done too)
-Make Sprites, some models and a level.
-Build up a demo version
-Send it to ID Soft. and ask for they support or/and authorization to keep up the project.
-If they agree! Man, its done! We can ask then even a copy of "the universe is toast" to us to make it or make just an keen 4 mod if the agree but not with the toast idea.
-If not, let's keep on the work without ID support.
-Then we finish the game and release it.

Project 3D Keen coming soon... :lol

I can agree with everyone that a platformgame is much more Keen than in 3D. But exploring Shadowlands from Keen's eyes is totaly another experience.
Not saying that this game will be awsome. If you think that a 3dversion would spoil everything, don't download it! I'm not trying to force everyone. Geez, can't see why you are so angry... :confused

If tom Hall wanted Keen 7 to be 3d (which he DID and will if he gets the rights) then there's nothing wrong with a 3d keen. Of course eveyone likes 2d still, but if tom hall has imagination for a 3d, then whats wrong with it? do you think tom will kill the spirit of keen?

Keengamer, Why don't you get support for Pac-Keen from iD, I don't see it happening, so stop your whingeing, just because you want your game to be more popular than his! (well, I'm assuming so.)

We should be supporting each other and not threatening.
I can't wait for keen 4 3d to be released. I just hope the zip will be quite small (considering that it's a 3d game).

We're not making money out of these projects so iD shouldn't have a problem with it. And either way, they're doing nothing with Commander Keen anyway, and whenever they try to do something new, it ends up like a pile of crap. (i.e GBC).

So whoever doesn't want to kill the *erm classic spirit, there is none because this new 3D game is not owned by iD, and it will not change the world of keen at all. (Unless your a sensitive little crybaby that falls for everything.)

I've always loved to have seen a keen-based 3D game (i would consider RKP3 to be a 2Dish 3D game), as long as it wasn't gorey and all. I don't care whether a game is 2D or 3D, as long as the game is a good one.

FPS? Is this being played from a first person perspective orrr? If that's the case, surely an over the shoulder 3rd person camera would be more appropriate? Maybe I missed something.

ANYWAY;
I'm right behind you on this DSL! Last time I checked out fan games, they were all Klik 'n' Play minigames. I want to see this finished, so I thought you should know I've done a bunch of 3d keen characters I could easily strip polygons off for use if you're interested.

Here's one I prepared earlier.

Not too much work required to get this one game ready. The rest of my stuff is here.

i reckon you should use that dopefish model, it looks really cool. this will definately qualify for a keen award once its completed. and you never know, iD might port it to xbox-ps2-gamecube with more levels and more advanced graphics.

id software REALLY SHOULD distribute and port some of the really good fan games. i would pay money to watch a shadowlands episode and not give a damn about the gbc keen game.

Well seriously, Flaose, what do you expect? Fan-games are mostly made by people who have next to no experience in game design, and are done in spare time by people who don't get paid for it. Commercial stuff is almost certain to be better, in a majority of cases.

Definately, but some really good mods make the original keen games look like crap due to the brilliant graphics & almost impossible levels.

So true. Most fan games are imperfect and have a lot of bugs, the original keen games had bugs too, but they werent too obvious and most of them needed to be experimented in order for them to be found (as we know, most bugs in games can only be found with cheats)

True, but many of us use tools such as paint shop pro etc, and if they were made back then, who knows, the graphics in keen games wouldve probably have been much better than they already are. (god bless ega)

I know that Andrew, I don't expect the greatest from fan games. I'm just trying to dispell the myth certain somebody's have, thinking that any of the fan-games are commercial quality.

I disagree. I didn't like RKP3 one bit. The only fun part of it was the dart mini-game accessed from the main menu.

ofcourse are fangames not as good as the original games. But people spent a lot time on them and most were made before modkeen so why bashing them. The people who made them did the best they could. And the few I mentioned are quite fun.

If he does come back, I'm offering my support in any way I can. I can upload files to my site (I have 19.8mb free), and mabye help design the logo. If 3D game studio ever finishes downloading, I'll do a few models for enemies and see if I'm any good. I might even be able to do that new boss I have planned for Keenbound...;) that'd be one awesome enemy if it comes out good.

I'd have put the bubble in, except this is for a game, so anything like that'd be handled by a particle or a sprite or something. Plus, it'd push the polygon count past 286, and that'd be dissing the computer I played keen 4 on.

Regarding the googol talk:

First, "google" is incorrect... it's googol. Only the search engine is spelled google.
Also, the number you posted is a googol, not a googolplex.

A googolplex is 10 to the power of a googol...
i.e. 10^(10^100)

Don't dis the original sprite, man. Carmack did with 16 colours and a 64 pixel square (approx) what I could only clumsily approach with 286 polygons and a 24 bit texture.

Great work on the 3D model :) I'm looking forward to the game. Let me warn you though, most programs that let you design "full featured 3D games" without writing any actual 3D graphics engine code aren't the most effecient. Keep it simple at first, because it can take a lot of processing power to run an optimized 3D game. Just keep that in mind.

If you need anyone to help do modeling, I have lots of experience modeling for POV-Ray, and would be willing to help.

If you're interested in moving away from 3D game studio, I'm a programmer who has programmed a 3D engine that was originally intended for a Commander Keen 3D game, but I unfortunately couldn't get any artists interested in making art for it. I won't be using that engine again, but I will be writing a new one soon, so if you're interested I'll offer my services as a programmer.

I've always thought Keen should go to 3D.

My first impression was that someone was going to give us actual funding (which would be sure to attract ID's attention). When I saw that was wrong, I assumed they would just be providing webspace. Now its apparently a publicity thing (see here for my opinions about that), and that could attract ID's attention too, but not as harshly as if we were actually selling mods.

three dimentional level design is always such a bear... best of luck to you in that, DSL :-) my advice would be to check out parts of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped! and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (or something like that) both had a good sense of 2d action in a 3d world.

Those two series imo don't have what it takes to make a great 3d-Keen-game, I've played a little bit of each (not those two specifically though) and their just a simple action flick that I'd walk out of the movie theater on. Not meaning to be picky but is it really a sense of 2d action in a 3d world because couldn't you say that the original Keen games had a 3d sense in a 2d world?

I don't really mind what way you go with this DSL -- well maybe not the bloody DOOM way -- but the game imo will probably need more than a 2d sense if you want it to thrive as a 3d world.

IMO, I think it should be designed a little like Mario 64 (mabye not the task thing, but at least the non-fixed level structure and the emphasis on collecting things). Keen could have to collect all 4 (or more) keys to exit the level, but there should be variations to the tasks.

I still suggest the "original" Keen style; it could be same but just made with 3D.
Or maybe different levels or areas would have different movement ability, though, that might be a bit too hard to make/take too much time. :)

Here's another idea: Keen could have vehicles to travel on! Ok, that would probably take too much time to arrange, but it would be really cool to ride a bounder in 3D:D . I also have 3D studio max and 3D game studio, so if theres any way I can help, email me at KaptinKrump@netscape.net . Hmm, let's just stick to what's in the original keen4 oK? that's the whole thing with this project.
there will be no doomish 3dshooter. no kind of voilence (except when you fire the neural stunner!)
just plain keen4.
i will also try to use similar styles of graphics.
(like those clouds in keen4. i want to have something that looks as close to the original as possible. not some ultra realistic clouds with lensflares and stuff)

but if someone knows how to use 3dgamestudio
or could give me tips in the future, i would be happy.
i'm still a n00b when it comes to 3dgamestudio. :birthday

Theres always the pogo stick, like in Commander Doom, or maybe Keen can hit enemies with the Neural Stunner when he runs out of ammo.

I think you should let keen talk with a real voice in the game. That would be cool. Just find a nice keen voice. I'll be happy to volunteer but I'm not sure if MY voice is very suitable. I just want to do something for this game. I don't know how 3dgamestudio works.

Hmmm, I really wouldn't like to hear anykind of voice of Commander Keen or Mortimer McMire on a fan game. The only right Keen voice would be one that Tom Hall and the gang would use in the next Keen (if it ever comes and if they would use Keen's voice there).. :)

since i am a total n00b at 3dgamestudio (ok i made my model run and jump but that's not much) i have no idea how the music works. i would really like to have dynamic music (music that changes in different places/situations)
but i was thinking about having the original songs (tweaked).
Like in the chasm of chills, I could use the original tune but with more percussion like bongos/whatever. We'll see about that when time comes. :stoned

Use the half-life engine. Very easily moddable. many good tools and tutorials out. Most of all i have half-life :D . Either way the game is awsome :drool

Hey DSL, if you're not going to use 3d game studio, could you send me everything that you've done with it? I might pick up the project sometime if I have time. It's up to you though, I don't really care. Plus that way you can have a backup if you really need it later on. Btw, I the work i have done in 3dgamestudio isn't much at all.
I have just made a couple of 3d models.
Besides, half life and quake2 are easier to work with.

As I got so little time right now, I feelt that I could save alot of time just doing a mod. Yeah I totaly agree that it's lamer that way. I know how to make models and place them in my own levels in 3dgamestudio. But yet I know nothing about scripting AI and such. But if someone could help me with scripting, I still really want to do the game in 3dgamestudio. ;)

There isn't much to show really.
It's just one single room with a playable keenmodel.
Though this model's animations are playing way to fast and is not able to shoot. Just run around :x

I really haven't spent much time on it yet and i'm sure I can figure out how to make the model shoot and so on.
I will try one more time with 3dgamestudio so please have patience. I will drop a line when I'w got stuff to show.

Out of curiousity, which version of 3D gamestudio do you have DSL? I downloaded a copy, but I believe that it's a general version with some of the features not included.

Whoa! This project is gonna take a VERY long time to complete.

I mean, the project started on 4/21/03
and to this point, all there is, is a playable keen in an empty room. iD could've finished it by now! ;) (i know, i'm exagerrating)

i reckon this project (if modded) can be completed mid-late 2004, otherwise with 3dgamesstudio, 2005. still, best of luck to DSL, he really needs to work with someone!

Of course Id would have finished it by now, they'd have a team of professional programmers and designer, who don't have other responsabilitys such as school or work.

If your predictions are right then personally i'd rather spend that extra year making it so that it was my game.

This project has taken a very long time indeed.
I never said I would work fast.
The reason I haven't reach very far is that I haven't spent many hours on the project yet. This is mainly because I needed someone for the scripting.

I'm too used to MultimediaFusion's storyboard and eventeditor so I had no idea of where to begin in 3dgamestudio. :x


Project Status so far:
:mort2 I'w talked to duke4e and where planning to make the game in thirdperson (like Tombraider and GTA3)

:mort2 Keen will prolly have health tree hitspoints as health.
(it would be too difficult to play with only one hit) The hitspoints are extendable as you pick up some kind of item. (not decided what kind of item) :blush

:mort2 There will be a save/load function

:mort2 You travel between the levels the same way as in keen4 (upper view but in 3d:) ) Hopefully you can play each level unlimitied amount of time.

:mort2 Every candy will be there. The scoresystem will work in the same way as the old game. You pick up Icecreams, Sodas, Yawbrakers...

:mort2 There will be some kind of music present. Not decided much on that point though.

:mort2 Hopefully the maximum amount of Keen atmosphere!! :D

The project is superior! When it's ready, I'll buy as many floppies as needed and take the thing home from the Internet café.


Until that I want to help you with anything I can.

What I can:

- I am a good NFS3 car designer (The car mesh design gave me a BIT practice in 3D designing and the editor can save 3DS files)

- Possibly some graphical (NOT MUCH!)

- Some paperwork (I mean level structure, etc., not any official stuff)

I'd like to help, but I've never touched the studio you're using. I've only used Acknex and I plan to get Jamagic (Clickteam's 3D game studio) later this year.

DSL, this game will be awesome if the jerks at id don't shut it down. And if it turns out great, you can do a 3D Keen5 & 6.... :rolleyes

Didn't xtra make some 3D models for keens 4-6? Pretty good ones I think. I liked the keen 6 ones the best, as they were cell shaded.

Rhino3d is more of a NURBS software.
I haven't used Rhino that much but I think is't easier to boxmodeling in software like 3Dstudiomax or Maya.

Yeah that "Myth of the Moon Stone" game seemed to be booking itself as a commercial product even though it wasn't. I don't think they've closed down any other fan games which is good, however we shouldn't mind too much if they do since they have the right to.

If ID gives you trouble, just change the name and pull a microsoft (ie, say that since you designed all the graphics yourself, it doesnt matter HOW much they look like Commander Keen). It's worked before.

As far as I know, if Tom Hall had had is way, that's the direction he was planning on taking Keen. He was hoping to have a 3D Keen sometime around 1992-3, with a similar playing style to Mario 64 (which came out a year later).

How far did you get?

The first level is the funnest imo but a lot of the other levels are really cool too. The desert level was another good level, I probably liked it because it was similar to the first level; an open area and a ton of different tasks to take on.

One of the hardest levels in the game was the ice level near the end with a snow man; this was the one that was hidden I believe.

For those who don't know Mario 64 was very replayable because each level could be beaten several different ways. I don't remember all these ways, maybe someone could help me? But the ones I do remember are: collecting eight hard to get red coins, collecting 100 common gold coins, and there were other ways too.

Well, I would help as I said.

You mentioned the Intro?

Well, I haven't done any work yet that you have asked for. Another thing is that I said 3d modelling by a very small ability. Well that's VERYERYVERY small, so you'd better just want to ask for some textures and small models, like in the background. I want to help, but I wrote this because I don't want you to give me a big job that I can't finish nicely, then the work will be for nothing and you won't be happy, too. (I suggest). So, I'd be happy to do some /junk/ work (like stars in intro background or smaller textures, or others.

So, what's the SMALL job?

I love those screens. I'm only up to looking at the second one, it looks a lot like a tomb raider style pool.

(I've only got demos of tomb raiders 1, 2 & 3 :D )

Great screens! That orangey platform thing really reminds me of Super Mario 64.

Can't wait for it to be out! (I know it's too early to be asking for a release date) Keep up the good work! I'd like to help, but at the moment, I don't have any 3D game makers.

P.S. There were seven stars in each normal course on Super Mario 64. Five from normal tasks, one from 8 red coins, and one from 100 yellow coins. There were 15 courses, not counting the 3 extra Bowser courses with one hidden star on each. There's also 15 extra miscellaneous stars hidden in the rest of the castle.

i just downloaded mario 64 (just to see how it looks), and i can only say that keen 3d will be 10 times better!

a little poll (1): shoud keen have pogo in this 3d version or not?
a little poll (2): should the camera be closer or further to player?

1) Only have a pogo if you can make it FEEL proper (like the pogo in the older games).

2) Which screenshot should be used as a basis for this answer? Also, is the the camera tiltable/panable during gameplay?

Pogo would be neat, not necessary.

Yeah, agree with above. :) It's probably pretty hard to make good and working camera for 3D games, at least that what seems with many many games..

IMO, the pogo would be really cool, but only if it was done right. You might remember a really old Playstation game where you played a rabbit (it was on the demo disk that came with the system). I think the pogo engine should feel something like that.

What's the job?
I am waiting for the answer about what will you give me as a job. I would be happy to create some textures.

I may also try to model with my ONLY program, Micrografx Simply 3D 3, but it can't save in 3ds format. If anyone has a converter than I would try and work with it, too.

You can make the pogo optional. For example, If you don't plan to make an openly level with big rooms, you don't have to implement it. In another level, you can make that the player must find a pogo somewhere in the level.

My suggestion is that: on every finished level Keen must loose his pogo and he will need to find it again on every next level, where si planned to be one.

About the camera. It will be a good idea if a player can control the view distance himself. If this is not possible to make, I prefer a closer, not very, but closer view.

this is clearly the most popular topic on this site and this subject is just too darn big for a little forum. I think you should start some sort of site that has screens, and maybe a DEMO and some important info about it because i just cant keeep track of how the game's doing any more!!

eh, I think he should release a one level demo, and then focus completely on completing the project (rather than making tons of screens). I know I'd be more satisfied if most of the game remained a mystery until it was released in it's entirety.

oh sorry, i blame my tiredness for not answering yesterday :tired

anyway, i find 3dgamestudio pretty hard to learn (since i'm a beginner to programing and using that software)
but i'm pretty experienced to modeling.

A Keen4 3D website
If DSL, duke4e, and the rest are interested, I could put up a Keen4 3D website that has all the screenshots, models and progress so far.

My only question is this: do you want the site in Geocities or Freewebs, because I can do either. :confused

If I do, I'm missing the shots of Keen walking, the shot of Keen in a sort of gray brick room, and the tree-with-face (I can't get them because they don't display on this topic anymore; all that comes up is the little X window)

Although DOOM3 will be released "When It's Done", they are taking pre-orders, and so far, the set (but unaccurate) release date is 3/14. :D

i dunno, i don't even think Ilsoap started on shadowlands III yet. Or he might have almost finished it but is pretending not to! I guess we will find out on 3/14! DOOM III might be released on 3/14 as far as I know, but I don't think it's an official release date. But it should be released this year, to say the least.

i have been considering making a 3D keen game myself until i came across this page. i read the first 5 pages and the last 2 so i dont know what ive missed but. if the game was going to be a mod of HL make it a Mod of HL2 because half life is retro now evan as it is the best game ever made (except mabye Commander Keen). i am also a decent webpage maker i also have Dreamweaver 2003 MX ( i have a .... Freind.... in the softwere buisness) so i would be happy to make a website (with a side bar ) and to the people that say a 3D keen wont be a hit ur a joke and i hate you

ok guys, heres the deal:

DSL and myself are pretty busy with school/work, so we won't do any major things until summer. then we'll start doing the real stuff, so you can expect a demo later this summer...

as for now, we have few textures and few models...
also, we're considering switching from 3dgame studio to darkbasic because it gives you complete control of anything, and also has better graphics engine.

sorry for bad news, but you won't be disappointed once the game is done!

I agree with Djaser, it is definately hard to restart, but once you are up to it again, it is easy to continue. I'd say you work half an hour or a bit more on the game every day, so it won't take much time away, but still keep you "on screen". :garg

I'm doing the same on the 3rd part of my game, and I'll hop to start this portion of the day once I've posted this message. :pogo

cool things i have been thinking of (we'll see if duke4e can make it possible in darkbasic (i'm sure he can))

*remixes of the old gamemusics, sort of new "versions" of them
dynamic music trigged by would be cool, but we'll see about what suits best (don't want to ruin the classic feeling)

*cg-cutscenes, yes folkes it would be neat having the intro/cutscenes in pre-rendered 3d!
besides intro/outro there could be cutscenes for every levels, sort of presentations of the levels and how keen enters them.
they should be funny ofcourse.
only thing we need is voiceactors because my voice doesn't suit well for either commander keen or the others.

*traveling in a free world, means that you travel through shadowland from a firstperson perspective only and there is no level select map you walk around in.
so if you are playing Miragia and want to go to the Well Of Wishes, you have to go through a number of levels to reach it... Tell me what you think about it :foot

any thoughs about the pogo? i would love to see it in the game but the question is, would it be easy to controll in 3d??

this project is certainly not dead to plz speak your thoughts now! :lol

Oom. Classy. I'm especially intrigued by the prospect of no level select map. Making Keen retrace his steps in order to get from one 'later' part of the world to another area would certainly put a new spin on the game.

Perhaps there could be enemies wandering around in the non-level areas, along with some bonus points and such. Could be interesting, but it might lead the game away from the original concept a bit too much.

Cut scenes would rock. Especially at the end of levels where council members are hidden. Though start/end sequences for all levels might not fit in quite as well if the world is completely free-roaming and there's no defined start or end to some of the levels. But at least giving the player an overview of the level in advance (perhaps a BwB's-eye-view of some sort, swooping in to reveal particular dangers and a few key areas) would be effective.

I presume there'll be cut scenes at the start and end of the game. Seeing the Keen4 introduction and ending sequence animated in full 3D would rock.

Definitely work in the pogo, regardless of whether it's inherently easy to use. I'd be willing to put in some extra time learning to control it if that's what it takes to play a really Keenish 3D game.

As for remixing the game music, definitely go ahead. Although it may require a number of different loops for each song, rather than short one minute songs, in order to keep some of the remixing from becoming too repetitive (and of course hearing the original music extended into full-lenght songs would be classy in and of itself).

Can you elaborate on "dynamic music trigged by would be cool"? If you're talking about using one basic loop and creating an algorithm to add in some variation here and there, mixing in some other bits and pieces to keep the repetitive nature to a minimum, that would rock.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

I think what he means is like the iMUSE (Interactive Music) System used in old Lucasarts adventure games where the music tune could change anywhere in the course of the midi. Don't know how you could do it though, but it would be cool.

as for the music, both of us (dsl & me) know to work in fl studio, so there will be no problem. if you want, you can check my bands page (http://www.redlaine.tk/) and hear what can i make with fl studio + guitar + vocals. it sounds pretty much like linkin park...

as for the programming, i was 16th on Croatias qbasic programming contest, so that talks for itself pretty much (pretty hard to go on country based contest!). programming in 3d is new to me, but i think i can handle it...

It's almost time for the year anniversary of this project starting.

For those who are weighed down with school and are trying to make a game at the same time, like I am, I try to schedule out the whole game on paper, and decide how long each bit will take, and find time in each day to do what I schedule. Of course this varies with how much work you have...

It's a background for the level guys not a screen shot, so it's only counted as a texture or concept art.

The background looks great DSL, and like KeenRush said it could use a little bit dark brown and maybe if possible bigger dunes. Perhaps colors similar to the below.

that pic is just something i made using the demo of geoscape (used photoshop for sky :stoned ) and thought i could make somthing like the miragia desert.

When re-making any 2d game to 3d, there's a lot of creative artistic license at play.

If anybody's played Sonic the Hedgehog (1991, Sega Genesis) and then got all 180 emblems in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001, Dreamcast), they've seen a rather refreshing case of 2d-to-3d development. I really can't put it into words, but if you've played it, you understand.

Some areas are a lot BIGGER. In the 2d Sonic level, there was a spring atop a loop-de-loop that propelled you about twice Sonic's height and four times his width to a new platform. This same spring in the 3d Sonic level propels you at least twenty times Sonic's height, and well over forty times his width, to a new platform.

The overall flow of the level is still intact (you can complete both in under a minute if you head straight for the exit) but the sense of nostalgia is fantastic.


That being said... if I ever got on opportunity to be a level designer for a 2d-to-3d remake of Keen:Vorticons, I'd be extremely excited. :-) But Keen4 is a good place to start.

Hmmm, Keen 1 as 3D.. (Even I couldn't play I would like to see screenshots..) That would be very neat. If I ever get a good comp that can handle 3D etc., you can be sure I'll start to learn 3D programming (hopefully with C++).

I just had a thought.....if this 3D Keen game is an exact port of the original, you could make it like Crash Bandicoot, where the camera moves behind you or is a side-view, so all the levels are still corridor-like, retaining the structure of the originl game levels.

I took a look back at the pages and saw someone writing: We need a server to host a website for this game or something like that.

My suggestion is www.sourceforge.net, the same place where dosbox is... It is open for developers if they make the game freely downloadable and open source... If you do make this 3D Keen4 like this, it should be a good server. (I think).

My appologies if someone mentioned this earlier... And even sorry if you already have a site...I don't know its address then - I really don't want to bother you busy designers making the best Keen game of all ages! :) :)

I simply adored the original Keen games and played them even after id stopped making them. But I've always been wondering whether or not someone would port them to 3D, and so naturally this thread caught my interest.

That said, is 3D development still underway -- meaning are models still being made and gathered? I know you all've shared models through e-mail, but is it possible to link to some images of them from here (and WORKING links, please :) )? I'm curious as to what we've all come up with for Keen and everyone else.

there's quite a few 3d keen games in production. but we haven't heard from many of them for a while...

Some will be stand-alone games, and others will be add-ons. Such as Commander Keen DOOM and my upcoming 'The Sims' Commander Keen expansion pack.

Ok boys and girls...

I think it's time for me to anounce that me and duke4e officially starts this project. I should had posted this ealier but since there has been major problems with my internet connection, i have been unable to post this :)


soo, the thing is---
we are going to make it as a mod for unrealt2004 (it's duke's decition since i'm from now on more responsible for the models and not the engine)
I would love to see this project done in darkbasic and not as a mod but i think this will save alot of work too :)
And the engine supports more features too i think ;)

I think it's ok that it will be a 3d shooter but will we be able to see keen walking and jumping on platforms etc. because a normal shooter like return to caste wolfenstein wouldn't fit Keen.

if you ask me it's ok, but we have been using warez version of 3d game studio, so we cannot publish it because we didn't buy the engine!

Oh, great to hear you guys are still at this. :) The progress sounds very good (so many textures and so on). Good luck!

Also, if duke has skills, it won't be a problem. I'm sure Unreal modifications allow same kind of coding and tweaking that Half-Life ones; which can make the game totally different.
And besides, if he can't code that, I'm sure there are someone in da Unreel communities that can do that. :)

pogo is just a "automated" double jump, so this won't be problem to code, since ut2k3* already has double jump

ledge grabbing?? i don't think it will fit into 3d game. maybe we'll add a grapplin hook (just like in quake2 ctf mod)

Great website, nice stuff! I'm liking the BWB rocket very much! :D Hopefully this project will see completion soon!

Strangely, more was completed on this project in this recent week than it has in 1 1/2 years. Odd...

EDIT: Just had an idea. Put the Keen4 3DGS files up on the Internet in a ZIP, I'll download it, and Publish the files with my registered 3DGS to make a playable EXE. Whatdya think?

this game will not be an exact copy of keen4. the levels will be there but they will look different. same with the music.

we'll try making the music as keen as possible. i have done some music now that we'll put on the site later on

Read the site--it's cancelled. However, I'm working on a 3D Keen in C++ code so everybody can experience the joys of a Q90 program. It'll be finished next year though, probably.

CKLVL03 (Keens 4-6) for TGF--Out tomorrow (v1.3)!
CKLVL01 (Keens 1-3) for QBASIC--Out in December (v1.0).
3DMedit (a 3D map editor) for Windows--Out Next Year.

And Shadowlands 3D is an awesome site. Can't wait til it comes out:) !

GameMaker cant do real 3D but i think it can do Wolf3D style 3D which is just a bunch of pictures arranged in a 3D manner

Sure it is, it even has it in the name! :)
(I suppose it's easy enough to lie, but it'd be equally stupid.)

Every 3D game is presented on a 2D screen, meaning there's nothing really 3D there.
If you actually dive deep into the code you'll only find only 0s and 0s, and beyond that little electrical currents, so it's all fake.
Since computers are digital, yes, games are basically a fast slideshow of pictures, but that counts for every single game there is.

In other words, I'm sorry, but no, you're not right. :)

The "arenas" are 3D (pressented through ray-casting I believe), but the "actors" are not.

True about the sprites of course.
They were just pictures of the enemies from 8 different angles, going through a set for animations like walking, shooting and the like.
Later for instance Shadow Warrior introduced voxel objects, that is powerups, not enemies, to the FPS genre in this way.
(Before voxels were used for terrain kind of things.)
Those were 3D, but still low res, and therefor blocky.

I don't understand the Tomb Raider comment.
I am pretty sure both the levels and everything in it was 3D...

Enemies and environment were exept for some miscellenous objects. If a 3d with flat enemies isn't fully 3d than a game with flat objects isn't either.

A game with flat enemies can be 3d. Wolfenstein limited you to only one plane of motion, so I can see how a person might say it wasn't 3d. I say it was, because it used 3d graphics (although crude) in a way that impacts the gameplay.

True, Wolfenstein 3D could've been an oldskool top-down view game, and the gameplay would've been identical.
Well, the controls would've been different, but besides that identical.

Everything "3D" you see on a computer is imitation 3D.

Actually, I meant that the gameplay would have been different. Mainly, you wouldn't have been able too see as far ahead if it were top down, but you would have been able to see around corners. Secret areas would also have been dodgier.

First of all, after thinking for a bit, I think it really depends on what you/I/we mean with gameplay.
I think I'd rather use the words game experience here.
Yes, the game experience is very different with Wolfenstein 3D than it would've been if it was another top-down view game, which explains why it was huge, and why it basically destroyed a new Keen game in the process.

The first problem would've existed then, but now with high resolution video cards and monitors, the characters, powerups, walls and everything could've been smaller in the game, and you'd still be able to see quite far.

Seeing around corners... well, take a look at WarCraft 3 for example.
It's possible to program the game so that you can't see around corners.
You'd need to do something similar for the field of vision, since that basically is an endless cone with the point right between the eyes.
Well, 2D, so a triangle really.

Secret areas would've been solved with the same programming as the seeing-around-corners part, where walls block your view.

I may have simplified things a bit, but in theory it's very possible to make an exact clone of Wolfenstein 3D as a top-down view game.
I'd like to get back to my first paragraph, and point to the gaming experience again.
In the end, that is what really matters, and that is why Wolfenstein 3D was such a success!
It felt like 3D, it felt like you were walking around for real.
That is why I prefer the later Keen games over the former, since things look like they have some more depth, even though through editing the graphics to be simpler you could get a original Keen-style game again.

Well, that's my two pence worth. :)

I am not sure how to answer that.
That's actually why I introduced the term "game experience" to the discussion; it felt less ambiguous.

The gameplay... the game you play.
The top-down game I discussed would basically be the same game, everything would be the same, even controls, only the view would be different.

The view has quite an impact, so the game play would definately not be identical, but still similar.
You would experience the game quite differently though, even if you're still basically doing the same thing.

I don't feel like I'm making much sense here, so I'll just come to the conclusion there isn't really 1 ultimate, true meaning for the term "game play", which is confusing. :)

Nope, since the editor basically is the same thing as the engine.
I personally own the game and therefore editor, and like both.
