Commander Keen Episode One Review

The first in the series is considered one of the best by many people. It starts the whole addictive saga and introduces you to Billy Blaze, eight year old kid genius.

Graphics: 3

In Keen1, there are large pixels and sixteen colors, which makes it get a bad grade. Now,
on the brink of the millenium, sixteen colors just aren't as cool as they used to be. But
they do live up to their purpose, which is to accompany an outstanding game.

Gameplay: 3

Gameplay also gets a three. When in the middle of fast-paced action, jumping and pogoing
get really annoying. Then again, the only hard levels are custom-made by fans.

Game Design: 8.5

Game design is excellent. The levels are well done, but very easy. After you've played
through the game a few times, the levels will become very easy. I can beat Keen1 in less
than five minutes. And it's still fun. I'm sure Miyamoto or Bill Gates would like to learn
Hall's secret.

Satisfaction: 10

Satisfaction is Keen's best area. The first Keen is very satisfying. Keen saves the world,
only to find a UFO floating above Earth, ready to blow it up. Back then, I believe that was
very original.

Sound: 1

This game has bad sound. I believe it has sound for dying, winning a level, jumping,
landing from a jump, walking, shooting, a bullet making impact, and hitting your head. When
you can list the sounds, that means there's not much to it.

Overall Rating: 59.25

Memorable Moment:

Looking through the previews of Keen3 when I was six years old, thinking," Wow! Look at the
great graphics!"

Keen1 just barely made it over the average mark. Back in the early ( and mid- ) nineties, this was a good game with good technology.
