New Keen (maybe 7)
I'm seriously developing a new keen game, and I'd like to see what people think. I've got 3 friends and myself working on it. Were in the design phase still, basically putting together concept, game mechanics, etc.
It's sounding like this so far.
It;s going to be 3D, either first or 3rd person; we considered just sticking with making it a side scroller, to keep the feel, but there's too much more we can do with 3D. It's still going to have a simple arcade style control scheme.
The graphics are going to stick close to Keen's cartoony roots; in fact, my programmer is considering integrating a cel shading algorithm.
I wanna pick up with a Keen 7, but I don't know how feasible that is. I also am thinking of the copyright issues.
My idea right now is that keen's a little older, Maybe 13 or so. It's been quiet for too long. He waiting for Mortimer; he hasn't been idle either, he's had time to improve a lot of his inventions. I've got more story, but I don't want to give it away just yet.

I'm basically trying to get a feel for what people think about what a new game should be, and any issues involved, etc.
I'm going to start a new thread. Let me know what you think.

I'd also like to know what projects have been started, if any, and if there's any talented people interested in helping with this. I'm researching right now, that's how I found this thread, about any projects that have been done.
For talent, I'm not counting levels built in the original Keen 1-3, or any game maker stuff. I've done HL mods before(nothing release to the public). This engine is going to be completely written from scratch.
I'm particularly interested in anyone with any game design knowldege, any 3D artists(especially those familar with 3dsMax), and any programmers (C++ prefered), although your welcome to drop me a line anyhow.

If I feel like it(hehe) I might post some of my concept art. Might help get people interested.

Sounds AWESOME!:D Not to be disloyal to the creators of Keen43D, but I'm much more excited at the prospect of an entirely new game. As far as helping out, I could send in some level maps, but I'm of no use as far as programming or 3D modeling.

Cool, currently 3 3D Keen games in progress! :D

*Commander Keen Doom
*Goodbye Galaxy 3D
*Commander Keen 7 {Unofficial}

Cool! :D
Later, I wanna get started on a DOOM 2 game, but it doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. I really need a new computer! :(

From Harvey Norman (3 day sale), I can get a 2.5GHZ computer for only AUS$999! I'd love to get that, but my dad wouldn't want that. He wastes almost $800 on a stupid automatic garage door but doesn't spend money on a good computer.

3D can either add a lot to a game, or harm it. It depends a lot on how it's done.
The two 3D games I've played which have given me ideas on how a 3D Keen game could work were Rayman 2 and (especially) Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project. Despite the latter being a pretty crap game, the use of 3D in the level design and the camera motion were both very impressive, and could lend themselves quite easily to a 3D Keen game.

Hmmm, sounds pretty interesting. And a team that you know pretty well and can contact easily is a big plus!
Good luck, sounds interesting! :)

Sounds really neat! :D

I've never actually played Duke3d, but I haven't heard anything great about it. I really liked the original two, however...

Showing off is really not helping at all.

It's nice to see more 3D keen games coming along. Especially one with a group that's ready to create their game. :D

This all was pretty suprising - out of nowhere that team comes up with 3D Keen 7 in their mind(s)! :)
You gotta make the Zoo there, that is must.

Just so long as you're not planning on selling it... :-) On top of what Andrew suggested, toss in a bit of Crash Bandicoot 3's spectacular character animation and intuitive level design... you'll have yourself a winner!

Oom! Oom! Wooooooom!! I likey! I must help ye. I can help with game design, concept art, and perhaps programming. I know C/C++ for the most part, but I've had no experience with 3D game development (but plenty in game programming in general). I may be able to catch on if the code is made available to me along the way, though.

I wrote a rant last year about how The Universe Is Toast could be made, which can be found here. It may be helpful in working out how the game mechanics will work.

I've been thinking about a 3D Keen7 at least since the start of last year, and I've got some trippy ideas in mind which have evolved even since the aforementioned post, so I must help ye somehow.

Update
I have to say thanks for all the enthusiasm; and as to whether or not we'd sell it; depends on whether ID would nail us against the wall or not for copyright violation, or if they'd want to sell it for us. In the end, it's their liscence. I'm all for it being free.
There are of course a lot of hurdles to overcome; I dunno what the average age of the community here is; but I'm 19; I have a job to contend with; I try to put as much effort as I can into this though; games are basically my life. Heh.
To CommanderSpleen; I'd love any help your willing to offer. Please e-mail me, so I can get in touch with you. My e-mail is "spektre1@aol.com". I was going to e-mail you, but I can't find a link on your site, and I don't have MSN messanger. I'm also on AIM as Spektre1 if anyone wants to get a hold of me.
I'm still gonna post some of the work, as soon as I get webhosting up and running again.

re: Keen7
My best advice to you would be to drop any and all ideas of commercializing a homebrewed Keen game right from the start. You can make all the Keen fan-games you want, but as soon as you bring money into things, you're gonna get nailed.

If you are looking to make something lucrative and marketable, I'd suggest building a game that's LIKE Keen, but is decidedly NOT Keen. For all intents and purposes, it can be about an early-teenage hero who runs-and-guns on alien environments. You could probably even come up with some sort of gadget he has to help him jump higher (spring-shoes, a burst-style jetpack, a Team Fortress-style Rocket Jump, etc) to emulate the gameplay...
but please don't try and sell a game that involves an eight year old genius in a Green Bay Packers helmet with an IQ of 314 and a B-w-B Megarocket!! ;-)

Other way you could do it is to design a game engine and maybe toss together a completely DIFFERENT game that'd be the selling point you market to a publisher--and then utilize the engine's fantastic modding capabilities to create a Commander Keen mod right out of the box to release to this community (thusly encouraging us to purchase your (hopefully good) product when it comes out!) This way you're doing yourself a favor on two fronts: you're not only avoiding any humongous copyright infringement lawsuits, but you're demonstrating your product as a flexible, community-oriented little bundle of talent. :-) Wouldn't that kick (butt)?

I think that's how Isis II started, isn't it? Someone was putting an engine together for a completely unrelated game called Worminator--and Isis II was more or less a 'mod' for the engine that eventually overtook the product and then was abandonned entirely? (my Isis history is very vague.)

Regardless, if you're looking for an end-result that can/will be sold, please please please do yourself a favor and do not make the product directly related to Keen--especially the title "Keen7" :-) Save that glory for Mr. Hall!!

ID has even nailed a game that had no intention of being sold (Keen and the Moon Stone).

Just can't wait for all these 3D Keen games!

I want to do a 3D Keen, but every 3D game maker requires knowing how to script a language. >: :(
Is there any 3D game maker that has a form of programming similar to Games Factory???

If I remember correctly, Moon Stone was booking itself as a commercial product...but maybe I'm mistaken...
Good gravy, MS would've been a great game.

I haven't heard much about this Moon Stone.. How did they stop the guy who was making it? Sending him threats?

I can't find any info about it. theNewSpaz's site doesn't appear to exist anymore (brone.net) and that's where the game's site was hosted.
