Bloog Control Center music - What the morse code means
Sometime ago I recorded the music heard in the Bloog Contol Center level in Commander Keen 6 into Sound Recoder, and slowed it down to find out what the morse code in it meant. Using a morse code decoder, I came up with this:

*** --- *** *** --- *** -** * -*- * * -* *** --- *** *** --- *** -*-

SOS SOS DE KEEN SOS SOS K

I dunno what the "DE" and the "K" are supposed to mean, but there you go. . .
Interesting, huh? :)

Translating the Morse Code! That's SO KEEN!
If I'd heard about this discovery before, we'd have another nomination under "Really Keen Stuff".
Hood, I suggest you ask Tom Hall about this hidden message if nobody can work out the what the DE and K are about.

Here's what Bobby Prince said about it:

Quote:

I did not remember that I put the code in that song -- I did the same thing in Wolfenstein and I do remember that.

DE means "from." K means "over." I don't know the history of those characters but I do know that it goes back to the earliest days of code -- maybe to the wired days before wireless.

Must be a call between two control stations.

what's the tune called?
The tune you decoded the message from - what's it called? I'd like to hear it for myself so I can see if I can recognize morse code when I hear it.

Heh, who'd have thought de-coding some morse code would get you so popular (well, just.)? :D Anyway, in this zip file is the recording of the Bloog Control Center music (.wav format). There is also another file, which is in .au format. It's a sound output from a morse code translator which I found on the internet somewhere - I just put my translated dialouge into it and this is what came out, and it sounds just like the morse code in the Keen music. . .

hmm...
two things that popped into my head here... actually three :-)

1) didn't Robert [Bobby] Prince write the music for the Keen games? www.bpmusic.com i think... someone should ask him about that

2) perhaps it's saying SOS SOS DIE KEEN SOS SOS (end) where the (end) is equal to the insignia at the bottom right of most SGA signs (dot dash dot) ...i don't know what a "K" in morse code is, but maybe it's a literal translation of an SGA sign? :-)

3) i never noticed that there were indeed shorter morse code blips there--i always only heard the long ones! this is nuts! :-D

Re: Bloog Control Center music - What the morse code means
SOS, DE and K are morse expedition codes.

SOS: Distress message
DE: This is
K: Over to you
Other expedition codes are:
KA: start of transmission
AR: end of transmission
R: Received ("Roger")
AS: Stand by
EEEEEEEE: Correction

If Keen were using a VHF radio instead of a morse transceiver, his message would thus be: "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, this is Keen, over".

Keen-spriacy Theory!
Don't you see? Of COURSE Bobby Prince deosn't remember putting the morse code into that song, because it's Commander Keen HIMSELF that is sending a distress call from your computer!
:eek
By the end of Keen VI, Keen KNEW that id Software was giving the Keen series the chop, and he sent out a distress call to his loyal fans (that's US!!!), asking for help!

Commander Keen wants us to continue his battle for the Universe ourselves, because id WON'T! His Universe is in peril and only we, the Keen fans, can prolong its existence - though fangames, fanfic, mods and other keenart!

Here endeth the lesson. 8)

TMST, don't you think that there are fans only in the US! I'm a great CK fan and so are some of my friends (the other ones hate it, tho) and I'm from Slovenia witch is in Europe.

Actually, TMST meant us, i.e. all us keen fans. (not USA). TMST is from New Zealand.

So, in a way we could say, that Tom Hall has unofficially entitled us to keep the legend of Commander Keen alive! Brewhaha!! :)
