Billy Retire?!
was messing around with a shareware version of Jill of the Jungle, when I noticed this.

The young superhero, B.
Blaze, yesterday announced
his retirement at age 13.
"I just can't compete with
those cool Epic heros," said
Blaze. "But now that I'm
retired I have more time
to play with my slide rule."

Ha! who's the "retired" one? I'd say Commander Keen is 100x as popular as Jill ever was! :D

Re: Billy Retire?!
So how come Jill doesn't have her own Ezboard forum?
:(

JotJ is my other "most favourite platform game". In many ways (includingthe graphic mode!) the environments in that game were better than Keen's. I guess CK was like a cartoon, and JotJ was like a surrealist painting.

BTW: Have you seen the reference to "Jungle Jill" in the story of Monster Bash?

yeah, i remember that... Johnny Dash is a chubby little freak... his games were fun though. i'm just pissed that there's a few levels you can't get the Loot Bonus on. >:-( there's 1 freakin' piece of candy out of reach, i think Episode 3, the big crappy house with all the electrical wires... grr.

Jill was a very fun game as well... i thought she looked best in her Red tunic ;-) the Epic Megagames guys know how to write very involving soundtracks--the Unreal games had killer music as well.

Where can I find that message in JotJ?

I think its on the main part where you get to all the levels when you get one of apples there.

Re: ~
"Jill Goes Underground" sucked. And it had few levels, which they made up for by making one of them ultra-difficult. And it had a map for the main level.
:no

"Jill Saves the Prince" was pretty rockin', but I never played it enough to like it more than the original shareware episode. I have decided never to play them again since my computer won't let me hear the wonderful music any more.

Jill Sound
Yeah, the sound in JotJ doesn't work any more for me either! It makes a horrible sound after I confirm the configuration and I have to reboot. But nothing has changed for my compter for it to not work. I guess one of the files is corrupted or something? I should delete and reinstall it.

NEVER!
*l* JOTJ can never replace CK!!! as long as kids need an excuse for throwing things all over the house, (namely 'they're Gargs!') Commander Keen will never retire!

the heck?
TMST, Jill goes Underground is Episode 2, when Jill wears her Red Tunic... that one, so far as i can tell, has no map screen to it, just a bunch of seemingly non-related levels all taking place underground.
Jill saves the Prince is Episode 3, when Jill wears her Blue Tunic... that one has the map screen (with my least-favorite music lol) and that one had very uninteresting levels compared to the other two episodes...

sound originally was synthesized VERY slow for me, but i found a way to fix it. in the Config, say Yes to Music, but No for Sound Effects, opting for the PC Speaker stuff instead (attrocious!) and then simply turn the Sound off in-game by hitting N or whatever the hotkey for it is :-)

i agree with you, Commander Riot, that Keen will never be replaced by Jill... the level design and graphics have more "pop" in Keen, and while the music in Jill fits the mood of the game far better, there's always a soft place in my hearat for Keen music.

After searching thru some screenshots from the above mentioned game i am convinced that jill's attempt to overthrow Keen with her ego has failed :)

Jill can kick Keen's RGB(255,255,255) bottom any day!
Oops yeah my altzheimers-addled memory has confused my recollection of Jill's main levels in episodes II and II.

But if anybody want the next best thing to Jill, may I recommend "Vinyl Goddess From Mars" - a splendid tribute/parody for Jill, more like a modern remake of the old original. Everything from the levels to the music all have a feeling of "Jill-ness" to them. Oh, and one more thing: IT'S CHEEEEESY!!!!!!

--------------------------------------------
And yes, Keen is all about cartoonish violence and the fun of destruction, but JotJ was a beautiful work of art.

0: "Wheee!"
*: "Stop throwing cushions around the house!"
0: "But they're Gargs!"

0: "Whoopeeee!"
*: "Stop tormenting the cat!"
0: "But it's a Garg!"

0: "Mum, Mum! There are Gargs invading!"
*: "I've had enough of your pranks, young man. Off to your bedroom!"
0: "But Mum, it's true, I swear..."
*: "No swearing in this house, sunshine! Now off to your room."

Jill's graphics
I'm a bit more ambivalent about Jill's graphics. It seems to me that id did in 16 colours what Epic couldn't with 256. They looked mismatched and muddy to me. And the enemies were pretty plain. What clinched it for me, though, is when (in a level in episode 2 I think) you find some white, all-caps fixedsys text that says "THIS IS A HARD MAZE!". Right. Maybe "THIS GAME REPRESENTED A HUGE INVESTMENT OF IMAGINATIVE EFFORT! REALLY!" could have worked too.

I liked the first episode (particularly the way the map worked), though, but that's the way with all shareware it seems. All the good stuff gets piled into the free part.

Re: Jill's graphics
develin: I have the full versions. Except... I can't play beyond the first level. It has a weird copy protection scheme where you need the fileid.diz files for the registered version if you want to play any beyond that. I know there's a way to extract it from the game data files, but I haven't figured it out, and no-one I can find has the fileid.diz file. :(

Well, you can't. At least, not anymore. The only two websites I could find it on with an EXTENSIVE search are now down. Sorry. I could send the files to you, if ya want. But unless you've got fileid.diz, you can only play the first level of each episode.

To me the best episode is Jill Goes Underground, simply because it's more surreal than the others. The painting metaphore is very true...

I couldn't get Jill Saves the Prince to ever work at a speed more than a crawl, WITH fiddling around with the sound/music settings. Then again, I'd only tried it on an xp, so..
I disliked Jill Goes Underground, it was just a random hodgepodge of boring levels.
