Finale.ck* yield up their secrets...
For those who are interested, I've now got the finale.ck* format worked out fully (guess what: it uses yet another compression algorithm!!). So you can expect a conversion util very soon now...

When it's done, I'll post it in this topic.

I would prefer you to make it as new program. If you don't have name, name could be "finalmod" or something.

Adurdin is making program what you can use for editing example ending pictures of Commander Keen 3.

hmm...
is it just pictures, or might it be able to edit the scripting of such events as, say... the flight path of Keen's ship in the ending of Keen1? the timing of the lights flicking on and off? the text his parents say as they arrive home?

I'm a bit confused as to what exactly is in the finale.ck* files...

If I know correct, finale.ck1 is just picture about Keen's home (that house and that box in yard). I sometime ago tested it by replacing finale.ck1 with preview2.ck1 and then the house was that preview image! So, that means it is just picture. I don't know about other Keens, but I think that it's in Keen 3 that photo and in Keen 2, I can't remember the end of Keen 2!
Well, I think that Keen 1's BwB Megarocket flight is hard-coded stuff.

In the end of Keen 2 it shows Spot sitting in the snow and a dialouge about that it's show day, so Billy/Keen will heve time to go seek the Grand Intelect.

If my knowledge is correct, they're in same format, so just make finale.ck1 and rename it!

Drat!
I just typed a long message about the conversion util, hit preview, and got an error message. Came back and it was gone. Don't you hate it when that happens? :barf

Anyway, the gist was, the util is working fine: after struggling with little bugs in the compression that only showed up on certain pictures, I suddenly realised that my whole compression algo was quite clumsy: so I redid it from scratch in 15 minutes in a far neater and more elegant (yay!) way, and it worked beautifully.

Get the util from durdin.net/andy/keen/fin2bmp.zip (30k)

C Source is included - see comments at top of files for conditions of use.

So, KeenRush and Xkylyr: you should now reconvert your finale pics, because they'll now be smaller and won't have the bottom two lines messed up; AND you can make your own preview files also (yes, they're the same format).

The conversion util works fine for me, but it still gives an error message. When I convert the .CKx file to a BMP it says "Decompressing... Can't save bitmap file!", but it still saves the picture... :confused

Whoops.. I had the error and success messages the wrong way round. If you can be bothered, you can redownload it to fix the problem.
