What is the
foundation of society?
What do you think all societies are founded on?
* Competiton
between everyone,
* Social conventions (Manners,
laws)
* Knowledge,
* Our desire to group
together,
* Our mutual needs.

It has been all just a big mistake.
Ok, kidding, dunno, but probably I wouldn't say every society is
because of a same reason.

Garg dew, taste
like a pile of glue. Eggs. ;)
Differences and opinions, because people want to feel important so
they make institutions where they can voice these in an overly
self-obsessed elating way. My kid was killed so I need five more
pointless laws, whereas one could have stuffiest for much more. I
can't stand vagrancy these idiots are ruining or country, when
cities and industries destroy the world we complain about a few
dulls who don't harm anyone. Schools are out of order and nothing
makes sense -- wait, they just beat my kid, that's so wrong! Etc.
because common sense says we should just accept some faults and try
to simplify things, since complexity never helped anyone.

Rants are
fun.
There are probably a lot of bases that societies can be bulit
around, and I don't care to delve into a quest for one common
underlying foundation. My best guess: differentiation between good
and evil. That and dishonesty, to ourselves and others.
I've
lost track of what this one was based around. Everyday it makes less
sense. I see no reason to perpetuate the economy if it's only going
to destroy itself (and is already doing so), yet that's exactly what
I'm told to do everyday--get a job, make money, don't ask questions.
Social conventions (Manners, laws) have to be one of the
flimsies concepts for a society, but that's what seems to stand out
most, IMHO, within the Western world--a rigid structure of laws
built to filter the vast potentials of the human experience into one
very narrow stream of conformity, yet never addressing the
underlying issues the perpetuate the outward problems the laws
address.
Although, I suppose that looking back on the past
1,000 years, we realise that our current society was really based on
knowledge... after the Church was brought into question, we needed
to find answers to our everyday plight. In the time it took those
answers to finally emerge into public awareness, we sought to find a
way of life that could guarantee our security, and gave up many
freedoms in exchange. Ultimately, we've brought ourselves down to
the level of animals, which we ironically hold in
contempt.
Well, security is one thing that I don't much care
for anymore. I know that I could easily drop this entire lifestyle
if I wanted to, and disappear into the wilderness. But so far I
haven't found that to be the answer. I'm still convinced the best of
both worlds can be combined. Currently I'm searching for ways to do
this.
Anyway, enough of my anti-Western drivel.
I'm sure we'll find a solution (or awaken to the many already
staring us in the face) one of these days. Otherwise, it'll be
interesting to face the challenges of a fast eroding world. At least
I won't be expected to get a
job.

To be the
purple, ah dream of dreams and yet a nightmare.
Quote:
Spleen: I know that I could easily drop this entire lifestyle if I

The philosopher Epictetus once
said,
The other day I had an
iron lamp placed beside my household gods. I heard a noise at the
door and on hastening down found my lamp carried off. I reflected
that the culprit was in no very strange case. "Tomorrow, my friend,"
I said, "you will find an earthenware lamp; for a man an only lose
what he has."
not a bad saying
since we could all just survive by eating bugs. Lol.
There's
other sayings of his like this one, that I like,
Is there smoke in the
room? If it be slight, I remain; if grievous, I quit it. For you
must remember this and hold it fast, that the door stands open.
"You shall not dwell at Nicopolis!"
Well and good.
"Nor at Athens."
Then I will not dwell at Athens
either.
"Nor at Rome."
Nor at Rome either.
"You shall dwell in Gyara!"
Well: but to dwell in
Gyara seems to me like a grievous smoke; I depart to a place where
none can forbid me to dwell: that habitation is open unto all! As
for the last garment of all, that is the poor body; beyond that,
none can do aught unto me. This why Demetrius said to Nero: "You
threaten me with death; it is Nature who threatens you!"

Family, religion, friendship. These
are the three demons you must slay if you wish to succeed in
business. You don't want to waste your time in a maternal hospital,
or sit in a phoney baloney church... or synagogue!
That's the wisest

Phoney website?
:O
"I know that I could easily drop this entire lifestyle if I wanted
to, and disappear into the wilderness."
Hmmm.. That's pretty
interesting thought. Well, I probably couldn't do it. First of all,
I'm too scared to do that, second, I don't want to do that (Keen's +
some other stuff is the most important reason). It would be very
difficult to survive out there as well, and it wouldn't be good to
go and spend some months somewhere, and if you for some reason come
back you'll notice you've been kicked out the school, everyone
thinks you're a ghost because the newspaper said you've been lost
and dead somewhere etc..

leap to their
faith
Religion is nothing more than philosophy, it is an individual's
understanding turned into some kind of faith. Who cares if a little
bit of god and creation are often thrown in, the base still exists
regardless. Therefore we are all religious, just, sometimes we are
not people who have chosen to believe in one of the established
religions.

Re: 1000!
Religion is not the basis of society. If religion were the basis of
society, then why is there so much controversial topics over
religion in this country? Why is there anti-semetism, or any other
religion hatred? Obviously, our culture exists for another reason. I
would say that our society exists because of our need for each
other. Like for instance, we need both garbage men and CEO's of
corporations to exist, but obviously the CEO gets more money and
recognition. We rank ourselves by class, which is ranked by money.
We need eachother to eachother. Our goal in society is to make more
money to gain a higher class. Look at the average family, the dad
AND the mom work, so they send thier kid to a day care and propably
will never get to know him/her. Why would they do this? Well, they
do it to gain class, and why do they want to gain class? I think
that every human being wants to be respected and liked. We join
together to create society because we all know we are dependent on
other poeple, and the society is based on class.
