Ah hell... here
it is. Isis.
Bah, I got tired of waiting... and sitting on Isis.
So
here's another demo, enjoy.
Commander Keen in "The Mystery of Isis II"!
This is part of what we have,
and this is where we were at 6 months ago...
Pisses me off...
Charles hasn't said a thing to me in a LONG time.

Re: Ah hell...

Ha... looks like the graphics for the elevator are wrong. If I
could use the editor in XP, I'd fix it... but since I
can't...
There's also a red robot stuck in the ground. Of the
two in the level, at least one is walking freely.
4 enemies
in all -- I think 3 or 4 weapons? There are some powerups that won't
make sense. Like the batteries (glow blue) and the grey balls (they
remove powerups that you grab)
You can look it all up in the
menu anyway, no need to explain it here.
---
Also,
this level has very few enemies because it was going to be the
secret level... which means there's tons of hidden areas, and I'd
love to see if people can find them all. I think it'd be neat if
someone finds the god mode powerups. (Even though the god mode
attack is super screwy)

What I'd like to do is get the source and a programmer who's
willing to help, and just finish adding the features we
want.
Then, when it's done, I want to start the Isis Project.
Where fans can make levels with their own graphics, and use any
enemy in Isis or the original game.
Wouldn't that be awesome?
Having access to every enemy, every weapon, and the ability to make
your own tiles plus use the graphics from the original
games?
If any programmer can help us out, that would be
GREAT.

Great enemies, too. The air sucking guy and blue guy that sticks
its head out of the wall are especially unique. I'd improve the
cloud part at the very end, because there's quite a few blind jumps
you have to make there... but a great game. (Good secrets, too).

Re: Ah hell...

That is incredibly awesome (so is the pacfish)..
A few
constructive criticisms:
I dislike how you can move slightly
left or right while retaining the standing animation--basically I
don't like how theirs a delay in switching from standing to
walking.
I think your enemy collision lets get hurt even if
you don't quite touch a monster.
Also, there are a lot of
clipping bugs in that level, you can easily get inside the mountain
by exploiting a ledgegrabbing bug (where you're walking in front of
tiles that you're not supposed to be in. Also, I've found random
tiles here and there to be foreground when they shouldn't
be.
You're ledge grapping is a little choppy, but I dunno how
you'd fix that. Also, it's amazing how Keen can hang on ledges that
have such a steep incline.
Other than that, I love it! The
paralaxxing and weather look really nice.

Umm... keep in mind, this was released with errors in the levels.
Being able to grab onto a ledge that you shouldn't, having
foreground tiles in strange places, all level issues that we can't
address as long as all the mappers are using XP.

eK - If you can get me the full source, and all the data files, I
can repair the editor under XP now. The version byrd sent me over
the summer didnt have any of the headers or data files, so I
couldn't even compile it.
I don't have any where near enough
time to work on the game, but I already have a win2k tile editor pre
made, that I can adapt to isis in 10 mins given the full source and
data files.
Good luck with the rest of the project!

The only way that would happen would be if the level fit the
story.
We have a tightly constructed series of locations that
keen visits, with only 1-2 levels per tileset. I doubt anyone would
make a level that would fit the game by chance - especially
considering I never added the tiles for the second half of the game.

happenend to the level of the previsious Isis demo. And is the level

Isis, being modeled from
Worminator, doesn't have a world map (unless it's been added but was
not part of eK's release). Also I've gathered that the type of tight
storyline Isis has discourages a world map.

Re: Re:.
Here are the states of the levels-
First level, the one
released in the original demo just needs some tile fixes and then it
can be rereleased. Because we can't edit our levels, this
discourages me releasing it with it's funky tiles.
Second
level, Snaily's level. Same problem, but worse. It also doesn't have
keen starting in the right spot.
Third level - Snaily's
second level. Far from completion, you won't be seeing this for sure
unless the XP bug is fixed.
Fourth level - Underground base,
my very first level... works great, but not quite finished. This is
the only one I'd release in it's current state (soon).
Secret
Level - as I said, the level included in this release was our secret
level. I hated to release it... but it's the closest to being done
out of all our maps.
Base - about as far along as Snaily's
map, this one wouldn't have even made it into the full release we
were planning. It follows the 4th map.
Those are all our
levels. I'm only willing to release the fourth level,
sorry.
No world map, because, as you suggested, the level
structure fits too tightly together. Keen starts out in jungle,
crosses some mountains, goes into desert, etc... The first two
levels are jungle, then there's mountain/cave levels, then desert.
The map I'm going to release is a desert + base map.
And yes,
we have TONS of tiles.

Ah heck, here
you go... another level!
Commander Keen in "The Abandoned Base!"!
You will come to a pole
that you can't finish climbing -- that's really close to the end of
the level, and your not missing anything spectacular by not being
able to climb it. Consider the level beaten by that point. All
that's above the pole is a key that lets you get to the exit in the
caved in base.
The big big robot guys aren't working right
yet. They're supposed to be able to blind you, instead they
magically alter the flow of time (Charles was having problems with
them)...
They're still neat though.
Note: To play this
level go to Load Custom Levels and select map01.map from the list.

madness.
Oh, and go ahead. Though most of the best enemies
are either A) not in those levels or B) not animated and in
yet.
If I were to pick my favs, I'd pick that yellow guy and
the red robot. But if I could choose from the other set of enemies,
I'd definately choose Big Purple and Hairy (aka Gruhg) and the

Thank's
Thank's I could use it. Yes, of course I know there are more
enemies in the game. After all you want to hide the best from us
until the game is finished.
Only problem would be the name of the trophy. I don't know the names
of those enemies. Don't say them yet, that would spoil it for me(and
others). I'll just make a trophy 'Isis 2 monsters' trophy or
something like that. I know what you mean by adding the music as
last object. I always add the music first in my levels and indeed it
sounds tedious if you test those levels over and over, especially if
you use a short music-file like 'Eat at joe' or 'To the future'(yes,
I'm not a musician, so I can't be bothered to make them myself).

Wow, I remember one of the first betas of Isis when I was new to
the community - one of the two levels included had this HUGE secret
area that everyone was either boasting about how they had found or
begging for the others to tell them the path to...
I tried to
dig up the thread from the JMMB, but the Keen Council page with the
archive has unfortunately gone AWAL.

Come on, even the creator of RKP2(that's me) thinks that Isis 2 is
better than RKP2. And don't compare RKP3 with Isis 2. They're both
entirely different games and nobody knows everything about both
games(I only know the things I see in the Isis 2 Demo). I personally
think Isis 2 is still better than RKP3 if Isis 2 is finally
released.

Re:

Well, I have become a little bit smarter on that. It reminds me of
the old days when I and eK were fighting who makes the best Keen
game. But now I'm a bit smarter than that. And I don't want RKP3 to
compare with Isis 2 as they're 2 entirely different games. Isis 2 is
more exploring and RKP3 is more avoiding obstacles(old
perfect-timing platform action). Not to mention that I did do
everything in my own and Isis 2 is made by a team. I'm not
supernatural you know.

I stand by my "childish" views that RKP isn't
exceptional in any way. I applaud the effort put into it, and it IS
better than a significant portion of the fan games out there, but it
doesn't grab my attention in any way.
I don't see how that's
childish, but then, people throw childish and immature around all

Aparently I pay zero attention to fan games (other than this one)
cause I have no idea what anyones talking about...
Just found
(and exploited, sort of) some of the clipping bugs in the first
(secret) level. The swimming is great... No dopefish?
In the second level, at the bottom level of the base, befor
the big flashy guys, there's a ledge that is forground that shouldnt
be. Look around and you'll find it.
Advice? Take your tileset
and make all the "secret" tile lighter or otherwise different from
your solid tiles. It make editing much
easier...

Re: Great

Worminator (and thus Isis II) is built around four layers.
Foreground, background, graphical properties and info (what you
would call clipping). FG and BG share the same tile set, so secret
areas are not made with a special tile but simply by putting the
tiles in the foreground.

Re: Ah hell...

Yeah, that also works. Invisible secret levels while editing
levels...
I love the "solarizer"... Good touch having it kill you if
you get too close.
You probably know this, but there's no
weapons near the start of the base... Dodging bad guys is
annoying.
There's some clipping errors in the destroyed
section of the base.
Did you mean to put in the "patchwork
quilt" sections? They're neat...
I can climb the pole all the
way up. This isn't an error, but it's worth mentioning.
I'm
presuming there's debug/cheat codes. Don't tell them to me.
I had some strange sprite errors with the doors in the base.
Keen came out above the ground, and looked weird...
What does
the teal/grey guy do? He doesn't hurt you...
I've had
problems with insufficient health and too many "phaser(?)"
shots.
That's all I can think up now... I could edit the
levels on not XP. If you think...

Question about
Isis - portability & programming
You may have mentioned this in a previous thread, but i didn't see
it. What exactly are you using to write Isis with? Are you using
a portable game library like Allegro or SDL? because if you are, I
would like to know if you are interested in help porting to
Linux/other platforms. (This is not entirely altruistic, i must
admit, the only way for me to really play this game would be if it
ran in linux. Or in real-mode dos. dosbox is a
way cool program.) I can also help with other programming if you
need it. I have always been a fan of keen, but not till recently did
i realize there was such a community, and many fan-made mods and
games.
In case anyone is curious, here are some things I
have programmed: A game I wrote a couple years ago is here: wizards
Some
programs i've written for the Sharp Zaurus (a sweet linux-based
handheld) are here: beetlegame and
here: spaz

Re: Ah hell...
here it is. Isis.
Isis 2 is just so awesome. It's almost as good as Keen 4, which is
my favorite original Keen game.

Thanks
As soon as I get off my lazy butt and release the
level editor, there should be more interest in it... I hope.

Gr8 job!
Right then my views: i really like what you have accomplished
and believe the game has GREAT potential! i gotta say that isis
graphx and game play are just as good as any of the ID titles, ilove
how you have made wehther and atmospheric effects! the enemies are
few and to far between but u already said y that is...
and the game blends perfectly with the story! i like the cpu wrist
update!i couldnt hear much of the music mind. like the enemies and
all the other plush graphx! cant wait for the editor! how did you
make the game? i forget how
! oh and pacfish rocks! more of it! but i don think paddle war
should be completely removed, perhaps update it with powerups or
sumin!? well those are my views: KeenMaster
PS: Great
JOB!
