Commander Keen: Monky Business
Greetings, all.
Inspired by the wondrous works I've come across over the past few days since discovering this place, I've begun work on my own Keen1 mod.
I've put up a site to track its progress at the JimSoft Lair.
It's only a few hours into development, so there are only a few screenshots at the moment. More info will be available over the coming days.
Enjoy,

Re: Commander Keen: Monky Business
You're a Toejam and Earl fan aren't you? Sounds like a pretty interesting mod, although it is a bit too flashy. Poor Dull Keen doesnt fit against the flashy backgrounds. Does that mean that keen's gonnaa be weating a pink feather coat and have a pink spaceship?
Anyway, looks interesting so far. Keep us informed. Also... I could swear I've heard the name Hector the Shikkadi before. Wasnt it in the original keen text adventure?

Hiya, nice to see you joined the boards, we talked in the chat one day.
And even started the mod! Great!
Gotta add your site to my links, oh, very cool screens!

Haven't played the text adventure yet. Hector was the first name that came to mind for some reason.

I don't think you'll find it that easily (the text adventure). I havent seen it in years. It was the one where him and the
Beatles (yes, the band) get teleported to some strange swamp, and he ends up fighting a Shikadi Master on the wreck of the Omegamatic.

CKMB Update
I pulled another all-nighter (I've gotta stop doing that) and made some more progress on the Monky Business mod. 5 new screens.
I'm getting closer to completing the level tiles... then I'll get to work on the main sprites. Once that's done, I'll fix up a beta version with a couple of levels and a taste of the tripped out map level I have planned.
Btw, can someone let me know how to set level locations on the main map (or point me to some existing info)? From observation it seems to be something to do with sprites, but I haven't been bothered experimenting to work it out.
Also, how many levels can be used in Keen1? Can there be more than sixteen?
Thanks in advance.

Re: CKMB Update
Wow, great job again! Nice to hear about that beta plan too..
When you want make a level thing on that main map, just insert a sprite with the value of level you want it to take Keen. Like for example give the sprite value 5, and it will take you to level 5.
And if you want to do a bigger level entering spot on that main level, just insert four sprites with same value, like this:
12 12
12 12
There was some talking about how many levels there can be, but I can't remember where.

Re: CKMB Update
Aaah. Thanks KeenRush!
Hmm... did some experimenting... seems only certain levels above 16 work, and they don't spawn a DONE sign.
Oh, well. 16 levels it is, I guess. It'd be nice to be able to fit more, though.
Anyway, I might have something useful ready soon... I'm working on the Keen sprite at the moment. It's rather difficult to make a monk walk convincingly, though, so it may take some time.

Another CKMB Update
The worm is just a random sprite I decided to draw out of boredom at one point ... some time this year, I think... can't remember exactly. Hmm... perhaps I'll star them in the second episode... for now, there'll be a 'guest' appearance...
Anyway, I have completed the walking and shooting sprites for Keen-monk. JimSoft Lair. 4 new screens and some behind-the-scenes of the walking sprites. There'll be some modifications to come before they're final (in fact, I've already modified them three times), but they're still an indication of what's to come.
Jumping's next... I've got a trippy idea... should be interesting.
Getting closer to that beta...
Enjoy,

Once again, new stuff.
I gave up on making the jump animation look trippy (I was aiming for some form of levitation effect). I adapted the levitation idea into the sprites, though, so all is not lost.
JimSoft Lair
That animation held me up a bit... now I'll make faster progress again, hopefully.
Enjoy,

Re: Commander Keen: CKMB++
Greetings once more.
I forced myself to finish implementing the modded Yorps and Gargs, and there are seven new screens available on the JSL .
In addition, I did some random 'Bit-Storming'... (Don't ask...) So now there's a mythology behind my idea development process... (See G'im's Improv World)... this seems to have helped the gradual drying up of my motivation toward completing CKMB (BTW I hope to have a beta release by the end of the week, and final release by the 20th, so then I can begin on the BWBMR shooter in TGF).
Some other projects I'm planning/working on are also now listed on the sites.
Hmm... well, it's 6am... I've been at the computer since 2pm. I'm gonna go sleep for the next day or two.
Woo! September! MegaParty 25th!
Enjoy,

I'm not too happy with my modded Gargs... they look too flat for my liking... and too big and unorganic... I'm trying to think up a different one again.
Quote: Tell me how often do you play your own levels?
More or less as often as I change bits of the mod... I've only really made the two levels you see in the screens, but I've probably played them both through about a hundred times...
Hopefully I'll pull another all-nighter soon and make some more headway on the mod... I haven't touched it for at least a day or two... (seems to be following the pattern of a lot of my other projects--huge progress for a while, then a sudden decline ... I'm not gonna let that happen with this mod...)
Anyway, if all goes well, I'll be starting the levels next week. Then I can have a beta ready a couple of days later. Here's hoping.

I drew up some ideas on paper this morning... and I think I've come to a conclusion on the new Garg replacement:
Simple, amusing, non-chunky. I should be able to make it animate more organically than the last ones.
Also, I think I may nearly be on the verge of another reem of insane progress. Hooray!

Yeehaw!
It seems I'm back into the swing of it again.
7 new screens.
The spikey eye dudes... let's call them... Instigators... have replaced the previous monk-with-big-eye-looking dudes. I like the new enemy much better.
I've got some interesting ideas working themselves into existence for the main map... and now that I have access to patching info regarding having items on various backgrounds, level variety will increase 12-fold... sort of...
Four of the screens play out an amusing little scene... at least, I found it amusing... bahaha... did you see that comma? Hahaha... priceless...
Err...
Anyway, enjoy the pretty colours! For they will soon be ... well ... more pretty.
Err...
Anyway, have fun.

Another all-nighter! More insane progress!
5 new screens.
I encountered a few problems and ended my screen-grabbing early. I'm a whole lot closer to the beta now, though. Another two days or so, hopefully, and I'll have something available.
There are some areas I can't wait to show people... and there's bound to be more new stuff by the time I have a beta ready.
Woo!
I'm detecting a very Keen6 feel to some parts of this mod. I'm gonna certainly enjoy playing it through once it's finished.

When you say insane progress, you really mean it don't you!
Those new yorps are great, and I'm afraid of those gargs. I don't get along with big eyeballs very well.
I really like the odd room room shapes you've got in places, and the two different background colors. I almost forgot the springy looking platforms!

New stuff again!
Yay! 5 new screens! Mostly the same sort of thing as the last lot. The behind-the-scenes stuff is a lot cleaner now, though, so I'll be able to make a whole lot more progress.
I redid all the tileinfo and so forth, so now I can place items on various backdrops, use a couple of masked tiles I've been meaning to get going, and do some other cool stuff.
From here, I'm gonna build a beta release, and get started designing the truly cool stuff that'll show up in the final release. I'll make the beta as interesting as I can. There's no limit to what I can do with this mod, so there's no problem of giving too much away before it gets played.
Oh, yes... I uploaded some scanned shots of the development work that I'd drawn on paper before and during the mod. There's a whole lot more I intend to add in the future. My development work, I hope, might give everyone some insight into my thoughts and such regarding the mod, and perhaps spark some new ideas.
This mod has been huge fun to build. And it just keeps evolving to different levels of classiness.
I also added a site about other drawings I've worked on that may be interesting, and again might leave someone with a couple of new ideas.
Enjoy,

Temporary Non-Access
Damn lack of Internet Access... just taking this fleeting chance to announce that I won't be a regular visitor for another week or two due to a lack of Internet access (I'm using a friend's connection at the moment)... I'll drop by as often as I can in the meantime, though.
However, it's amazing what happens in a day after not having been on the Internet for a week... just today I managed to make a whole lot of progress on CKMB. No screenshots yet... if I don't manage to get some shots up later today, expect something huge in the not-as-near-as-now future.
UPDATE @ 9PM: I was nearly about to release a few new screens... but I've decided instead to work at a beta and conserve my latest progress so I can deliver a lot more in one hit... it won't be September 20 as I planned... before my birthday (25th) I'll have something.
Back soon full-time, hopefully!

Commander Keen: Monky Business - No Beta, But More Stuff!
Well, so much for the plan to have a beta ready before SpleenDay. I have 13 new screens up, so you can see more of what to expect (there was no way I was going to make any more progress unless I put up these screens, it seems.)
No more vague speculation as to what's to come, though. That usually ends in disaster for me. Just wait and see.
The patches Andrew's been releasing this past month are offering me a lot of freedom, allowing teleportation within levels, 'doors' on the map level, and a lot of cool bits and pieces, so I'm gonna have even more fun making this mod.
Anyway, check out the screens, see how it's coming along, and await moreness!

Commander Keen: Monky Business
Wow. It's been an insane couple of months. I thought I'd made very little progress, but it seems there was enough to constitue adding 9 new screenshots to the collection.
The beta release idea kind of fell apart as new ideas caused me to become overwhelmed with possibilities, as well as existing design material ran out.
Lesson 498.3 for Spleen: Don't get too attached to one outcome.
Following this lesson, I shall keep everyone posted as to the developments, but won't make any further promises as to what's coming.
Along with the 9 new screens there's a new drawing I scanned in that gives some insight into the wackiness this Keen mod world entails, and an update to the JimSoft Lair.
I can tell you some of what exists in my mind so far without compromising 498.3. Keen6ish map graphics abound, and unconventional level styles are the norm. There's a very Keen6 feel about the whole game, and there's a wacky twist at the end to look out for.
But that's all I'm saying for now.
Enjoy the new stuff!

Re: CKMB - Jump Animations Complete
Dear All Of The Keen Fraternity,
Foregive my slight stupidity towards the world of keen, I am still only a geek (in the most wonderful sense of the word) in training.
My first commander of stupidity, Mr. Spleen, has produced a magnificant mod which started getting me interested in the world of keen.
I am still trying to convince him to go with "Commander Ken - Marooned with Naked Barbies" for his second Mod.. Either that or "Commander Keen Saves The Galaxy.... NAKED!"
Anyhow...
Thankyou for the Mods everybody, I have had a chance to play alot of them and they are all great testiments to something rather large and shiny.
On another tack:
Commander Spleen and Myself were having a conversation a little while ago where the following situation was portrayed in front of an all too large Audience...
Me: "Man, Commander Keen Rocking.."
CSpl: "Indeed"
Me: "I wanna be like Commander Keen when I grow up.."
CSpl: "I see, you want to be an 8 year old boy genius..."
Then I laughed, he laughed and I told him to stop pointing things out that made me look stupid..
Anyhow, I'm off to pursue my dream of driving a horse and cart into a small fence and slightly less that the usual average speed of an unlayden coffee table...
Bon Voyage!

12 New Screens! And then some!
Aah. Much better. After such an incredibly long time (so it seems, anyway), I'm actually making huge progress on my mod again!
12 new screens shall you find (JSL ). And I converted the blue Keen font I found at the Keen Vault into red to suit Victor's Clapstatic Keen, which can be downloaded from Spleen Keen.
Quote: Me: "Man, Commander Keen Rocking.."
CSpl: "Indeed"
Me: "I wanna be like Commander Keen when I grow up.."
CSpl: "I see, you want to be an 8 year old boy genius..."
Yes, I was quite proud of that remark. However, Monty did kind of pitch it to me... effort free calls are always profitable, though.
Quote: Then I laughed, he laughed and I told him to stop pointing things out that made me look stupid..
Believe me, it's easy... Keen Online now knows from experience.
20 years from now, this is gonna be one of those posts we pull out to degrade famous people's credibility.
Quote: That's probably Aussie humour..
I'm sure most Aussies would shun being identified with our whacked out sense of humour... though I'm slowly scraping together the comical underdogs of the country...
If you want to see more of Mr E Leg's material, check out the House of Lemor at the JSL, added this update.
Quote: Well, the good thing is that we get totally tested mod to enjoy. Hopefully we aren't going to miss it totally..
It's gonna be a thorough piece of work for sure. It's great having some other people around while I'm making this, as varying points of view always help find ideas that would be overlooked by the creator.
Anyway, enjoy the new screens. We'll see how I go with a demo release soon. There are so many more things I want to do with the full mod, but I'll work at scaling it down for the sake of a JimSoft Day release (December 11).
I'll be LANing away for the next day or two, so I may get some other useful opinions on the mod... further evolution isn't too far off...

Mod Evolution!
Quote: |--------||-|
Well, for the demo, I'd say:
|-------||--|
Another four main levels, and two gateway levels and I'll have the lot done. Then front and back end wackiness (I'm going to have a proper ending). And after that, lots of self-promotion.
I would have had the demo ready by now, probably, if I hadn't had some sense slapped into me by Victor and Monty regarding my level design, which has now evolved to be still just as diabolical, yet now more supervillain diabolical (ie. possible).
I've put up 8 new screens, and an example of what the levels could have turned out like. Be thankful that one isn't making it into the mod.
Spleen Keen
The demo feels good to play, as it is. Taxing, but not infuriating. And the intermediary gateway bonus levels work very well to make up for the evilness.
So many possibilities... and I've still barely scratched the surface of what can be done with this mod. The demo shall be well worth playing as a stand-alone mod, I should expect, rather than just a taste-test of what's to come.
Enjoyfurlage!

Mmmmh..
What does that mean keen online? If it is something good, then I'm probably having it.

Those screenshots are starting to remind me of the first Clyde game.

Re: Mod Evolution!
I almost wish I hadn't given up modding. Hopefully I will be able to make MMF do tricks like that. If it turns out it won't support my tile-based ideas, I'll need a new hobby.
-P.S. Good work Spleen.
