Countdown to Isis
I thought maybe I should give you guys a list of things we need to have in Isis before it's release and do a countdown every time one of those things was completed. So here's everything:
Art:
Death animations for 2 enemies
Programming:
5 Enemy Weapons (Isonian, Red Robot, Flasher (2), Boss)
4 Enemies (2 waiting death anims)
Pacfish (I ain't tellin')
Switches (for activating lifts and such)
Upside Down Slopes
Levels:
1 Level from Snaily
Finishing touches on 2 levels (requires switches)
Other:
Opeining Sequence (waiting on Too Much Spare Time for the last frame)
Ending Sequence (looks in direction of Too Much Spare Time)
That will give you guys a better idea of what we still need to do. The biggest obsticles are the switches, pacfish, Snaily's level, and the ending sequence.
The release date relies on those more than anything.
I will give you guys something close to a weekly update in this thread in order to give you an idea of how fast things are progressing.
Snaily, if you read this, TALK TO ME! We need your level and you haven't responded to my messages in about 3 weeks!

Looks like you're finally about there...
Wow. It looks like Isis II will finally be finished after these 2(?) years. From what I've read about the game, it looks like it will be awesome! I just hope you can get in touch with Snaily and the game isn't delayed for another year...
Anyhow, good luck to you and the rest of the team. Can't wait to see the finished product. Once you've actually finished the game how long would you say it would take to play the whole game through?

Hmm
About 2/3 as long as it takes to play through Worminator... though we've never really play tested the game. Once we have it about done and most of the listed things are in we'll have people playtest it and I'll be able to give you a better idea.
That 2/3 estimate is based on level size and quantity as compared to Worminator. So that would be, what, 3 hours of game play?

Update
I decided to add 2 more enemies to the game that I hadn't been planning on putting in. I did this only because they won't be hard to do artwise, and hopefully Charles will be able to put them in while we wait on the maps.
Of the 5 enemies I had before me when I started this post, 2 have been fully completed on the art side, 2 need attack and death frames, and one just needs death frames.
This will bring our total number of enemies to about 16! That's not including multiple versions of the same guy. The 3 Isonians are being counted as one, and I'm including the final boss in that figure.
Ah, and of course, you guys might want to know about the latest feature already in the game. We finally allow keen to shoot up and down. Yup, and it's a real treat. Finally I can kill my enemies by jumping over them and shooting down
That's all for now. Expect another update in within a week. By then I should have everything but the boss done (and I may even have him done too).

Update
Okay, I now have 2 enemy death anims to do.
I did an assessment of how many enemies we'll have in the game and here's what I came up with:
2 fish - 2 in
4 robots - 1 in
5 ground life forms - 3 in
3 isonians - 3 in
1 boss - half in
That's assuming everything gets in that I'm intending.
The boss and one of the robots are the only baddies that need death anims.
We have art (unanimated) for about 8 other enemies, perhaps more, for the second half of the game and an additional enemy already completely animated that is the 2nd half's equivalent to the Foog. You should've already seen the art for him, that guy I had as my personal image for a while.

the usual
I'm bored, mostly because I couldn't sleep -- and decided to come here and waste some time. Time I should be speding writing a paper for English due later today. (oh, I'll write it, don't worry)
Anyway -- I decided to take a break from art for a while and decided to work on this one level I'd started about 2 months ago.
I wasn't planning on making the map in order to release it with the first half, but rather to release it with the full version (so there'd be new experiences in replaying the first episode). I decided to work on the map some more (having stopped because I didn't like the direction I was taking it) and realized that the map was becoming something awesome -- something that HAD to be included in the release.
It was then that I realized that if that map went in we'd have 6 maps ... that's as many as Worminator! -- and our maps are a LOT harder to make.
I don't want to tell you guys about the map -- there's only a few tilesets you haven't seen yet and I want to keep them as suprises.
So basically I'm updating to say, "expect 6 maps rather than 5".
----
I know many of you either don't like the editor or don't know how to use it. For those of you who don't like it you could always visit the worminator page, get the source to the editor and build a better windows one.
Or, if you don't know how to use it, I'm working on making a simple FAQ which explains the basics of the map format in Isis, such as what all the layers to and such.
Our hope is to get many new mappers for the second episode so that we can make it faster. I'm also hoping the level editor will become more popular as the possibilities for levels increases with the plenthora of tiles we have for you.
---
There are other things, but they're for later. Anyway, I'm off to bed (got to get up in 2 hours, eat, and write).
Oh, and hopefully I'll hear from Snaily or Charles again soon and I can tell you about progress in other areas.

Re: the usual
I can update here and now.
I'm finding that making my final map is really troublesome and a pretty boring task. I worry that it will become below-standard when I'm finished, but I am trying my best to avoid such an outcome...
basically, I'm thinking about remaking parts of it since it has gotten a way too un-keenish look.

Do what you want, just make sure your done in a by about April 15th. That would be ideal. Any later ... I dunno. Your level is crucial. We can't release the game without it.

Isis On The Web
Where’s the Isis II website? There was supposed to be one with this release; yet there’s no talk about it. You going to make one eK? Have you got it done? Or maybe it was forgotten…
-----
Mort stand 5 yards from Keen, and says "Hey Keen they forgot to make that website"
"That’s not even proven-take it back Mort!" Keen stalks toward Mort.
"No." says Mort pedantically.
"ARRRGG!!!" screams Keen, "Take it back!" he swings at Mort.
Mort dodges Keens, and taunts "No, mister three fourteen."
Forge looks out from the message board and says "Who will win this flaming fight? Only the true answer about Isis II webpage can tell you that." Mort and Keen bump into him, "AHHH!" yells Forge, obviously exasperated, "You can’t do that, fiction and reality aren’t supposed to be mixed!" he waves his arms wildly!
Mort and Keen, look at each other and smile, then they look at Forge.
"Uh-oh." says Forge.

Isis will almost certainly be under 3 megs, or perhaps just a bit over - depends on the things we haven't made yet. Right now it's about 2.5 if I remember right.

Seems like it's about time for an update :)
It's been a bit longer than usual, but that's because things have been slow.
Most of my work has either been on my level or on fixing problems with the art. For instance, I just made replacements for the attack and explosion caused by one of the weapons. This is actually the 3rd time I've done this for this weapon. Cross your fingers and hope the 3rd time's the charm
I still have 1 enemy to animate -- we're dropping the Boss from this half of the game. We're replacing it with a suspenseful ending. Hopefully fun will be had by all
Charles just added a new masking tile which will give us even more versatility in level making. Not only that, but soon another enemy (or 2) will be in and ready to be added to our levels. Once those 2 are in, we'll have 3 left before we're done with that.
My level is awesome 9000. As far as my levels are concerned, it's by far my best. It'll be nice to get feedback on it. Snaily liked it
Oh, and I thought you guys might want to know what it's like to play the newest build for someone who's never played Isis before. Here's what Too Much Spare Time thought of it (quoted from an email he sent me, hope he doesn't mind):
"I have finally got the Isis II demo to work and I am totally blown away by it. AWESOME does not
describe how unexpectedly impressive it is, and I'm
sure that the full game will cause a similar reaction
at the highest level, i.e., with the Monkeystone and
3D Realms people who originated Keen in the first
place.
The movement, the backgrounds, the VGA graphics...
very nice. It's up there with the best platform games
(from the days when they used to make them). I even
haven't seen any enemies or heard the soundtracks yet
but it looks great anyway. Isis II is gonna rock the
fraggle!"
Oh, and the only maps I sent him were our two worst (just because they were the most finished)
One last thing, the reason he got to see it was because he's helping us with a few things and he would need to play the game to be the most effective he can be at his assigned job.

Yeah, sure, you can have it. Except that there are several enemies lacking, much art not done and not a single word about the story nor readme nor explanations in the executable! Oh, and it can't be played, either. most levels aren't perfected, and some are not ready at all.

Re: Countdown to Isis
Alot more features are in and DML is helping out a bit on some of the coding. I've raised the sprite count again, and now it's up to 630 sprites that are addable in the editor. There are alot of other things that I did, but I'm not saying.

Flip Frop Flop Plof.
630 from 512, which means 128 more Yay!
The last version we released maxxed out at 256, so we've more than doubled that.
Everything is moving along nicely this week. Pacfish and basic switches will be in which leaves us with mostly simple stuff like enemy and weapon code to do.
The last few tiles for the last few levels are being completed, and to top things off, I'm listening to Radiohead right now
Oh, and Adurdin, thanks for the pacfish code, I think you can guess what it is (wink wink), but don't tell anyone else about it. It's become one of our suprises.
(not our only one, mind you, but never the less...)

Here's something a bit solid.
Okay, I've finally got a pretty solid idea of what the level count/structure will be. So here goes:
Level 1: pLeit's level (you've all seen it)
Level 2: Snaily's 1st level (the jungle one with the water)
Level 3: Snaily's 2nd level (no screens)
Level 4: My first level (you've seen screens)
Level 5: My second level (you've seen screens)
Level 0: Secret level (no screens)
There's a chance level 5 might not make it. I haven't decided yet. It's pretty much done, but I'm thinking of holding off on it. If it goes in, it'll prolong the wait until release. If it doesn't go in, we'll have fewer levels than I'd like. Hmmmmmmm....
We'll see what happens.
Just to let you guys know, Level 0 and Level 1 are done. Level 2 and Level 5 just need to be refined a bit, and Level 3 and Level 4 are still in developement. (I'm redoing part of my first level, part that sucked).

Hmmm....
Well I find myself working on the menu. If you didn't know, we're going to have a complete menu system like the one in the original game. We have almost, if not all of the same features plus a few the originals didn't have.
Right now I'm working on the final frontier of the menus, the help screens. So far we're planning on putting the story, items, and controls in the menu. The items menu is the last thing to do and I'm working on them now. It's taking a while. We have all the point items, health items, powerups, etc.
No, we won't put enemies in the help section. Discover them for yourself and be suprised.

Seriously, do you want them to take two or three weeks making a website telling you stuff about the game (which would mostly be old stuff since they're wisely keeping the new stuff secret), rather than spending that time on the game and thus getting it out faster?

We used to have a web-site, but since DML's site went down a while back, it never got put up anywhere else. Also ID software may see the site, and pull the plug on Isis. So to ensure that that never happens, no web-site has been put up. After the game is done, there'll prob. be one.

Just got a new build of the engine though. Now we have almost everything in. All most all that's left is fixing stuff (rather than adding new features)...
Just be patient.

Re: Just to let you know we're alive
I'm patient but I still want to ask, will the Isis II be ready in this summer?

Heh.
If its not done this summer, I'll finish the damn thing myself! Anyway, I still plan to do a win32 port if eK don't mind. I can add most of the worm32 features, as well as some new things like a high res editor.

Isis
The background eK made doesn’t load, so maybe one of you could fix that. Also if you don’t mind could the Newsletter put a copy of it up on ck.net?
Also, I already have a copy of it, but could I maybe get a "png/ping" format?

Re: Isis
I'd rather not see any Isis site on the net until we are finished, so if it comes to a vote I'm against further spreading. Anyway, it's eK's call.

Hmm
Yah, I essentailly agree with Snaily. I don't thnk the old page is that important, but you definately won't see a new page for a while.
The game will be on cc314 and probably a few other places. You'll be able to get it there, you don't need a page that badly do you?

Pogo
In the Isis demo the commander keen spirit graphics are much improved ,especially when he looks down. But I've found it ugly when Keen jumps with his pogo stick . Maybe these graphics could be changed.

Oh, and when can we get Keen to shoot up when he's on the ground, and down when he's up in the air?

Re: Countdown to Isis
Heh, I've been playing a "press release" (since I run apogee central) copy of Isis II, which includes two levels that no one here has seen (except for the team, of course) and I must say, the game is great. Isis has a real feel for the original keen games, and it has some really cool features too. The enemies are smart, and well drawn, the levels are well laid out, and there is some kick ass art in the game that looks just like it came out of keen 4, 5, or 6...although it didn't.
I really need to sit down and finish off those levels, I've only recently been able to play for 10 minutes a time....anyways, everyone here is going to love the game.
Great work Isis team!

Re: Isis II
[Xky is more or less clueless]
Wow, i remember downloading a demo of Isis waaay back when. only had 2 weapons, which were based off the Neural Stunner and the Ray Gun from the Vorticon trilogy... some nice initial level designs and what not.
blows me away to know that you guys are still crankin' away at it :-) best of luck to you. i might pop back into this forum now and then to have a peek at these threads... interesting!

Re: Countdown to Isis
I guess that I should be appologizing for taking soooo long on Isis, but I am a perfectionist and the team keeps mentioning lots of tiny things that they need fixed, so I fix 'em. I have a few bugs in the game that you would not like to have in a release that I'm trying to exterminate. I was also dragged on vacation to Florida and I couldn't work on Isis for about 2 weeks. I'm still working on Isis as hard as I possibly can, without staying up for 24 hours straight.

Re: Countdown to Isis
Every Keen game so var has had major bugs, if ISIS II had a couple of bugs, it wouldn't be any worse than any other game created. Just think--if you release a buggy version, you can always release a new patch every few months.

Releasing a buggy version...? no
There is just one problem with releasing a buggy version.
You'd have to download almost the whole game over and over again.
Files:
Keen.exe - 405kb [right now anyways]
Keendata.dat ~ 1.2mb [approx.]
Map##.map - 344 kb each
Those are the important files, and if I made any changes to them, you have to get it all over again... and if it was the .dat file, you'd be there for a while. I'll figure out later how I can make patches for it, but that'll be after the 1 episode is done.
BTW: I fixed all but one of the bugs that I was talking about. Just can seem to get it out... [maybe a can of Raid will help]

Bugs suck...
If you want, I will take a look at the latest build if you are having trouble tracking down a few bugs. I am not doing much this summer, so I have plenty of time.
Also, btw, the actual download size for the game should be relatively small, as the map files will compress down to less than 1% of their original size. The map format is nothing but a raw memory dump, and is not compressed in any way. Winzip typically compresses the maps from around half a meg to ~20k.

Cost?
It will cost however much of your time it takes to download the file.
The game will be freeware.

Sorry about not saying anything, but..
Charles, as far as I can tell, isn't having any significant problems with the game that he can't handle.
The engine is, truthfully, nearly complete.
Snaily is still on vacation, which means the levels won't be ready for a while.
TMST hasn't done the ending sequence...
It's just a matter of time now. If Snaily doesn't finish his level *I* will. If TMST doesn't do the ending *I* will. Just wait.
More when we're about done.

Re: Sorry about not saying anything, but..
The errors that I have are things that I keep missing when trying to change an aspect of the game. I just have to look long and hard for it, but other than that, I'm doing well with the programming. The engine is almost done, just 2 or 3 more tiny things that I have to do.
