And so, without any hype whatsoever...
...my Keen 1 mod is done. Or, at least, the first beta of it is done, anyways...

It's called "The Search for the Sentinel."

Woah, I'm gonna test right now! :) BBL.

Also, can I put it on my site?

We want Keen Chronicles!

Thank you! You can put it wherever you want. (So can Xtraverse and anyone else. Knowing Tripod, they'll delete it from my webspace for no reason.)

Hmm, that page is a little sparse.

I only use that page because Tripod is fussy about direct-linking.

re: mod
So why have there been 4 responses, but none about the mod? Personally I think it's a great first showing--used the palette change patch, had a nice story set-up, great looking terrain tiles (except those yellow-and-red blocks... hurt my eyes) and good concept art. I personally didn't really like how the Synchronians all kept their arms at their sides at all times, but that's a sprite issue.

I haven't played past level 1 yet, but I wanted to offer positive feedback. If I had to offer suggestions for improvement, I'd say to make the Synchronians move a bit more as they animate, and maybe make that backtrack to your ship at the map screen a little shorter (or at least label it--you may have the ship there for ending reasons, eh?)

Agree, the use of palette patch looks very good. Also, I was commenting the mod, it was the first reply in this topic..

Yeah, it's good. I like the logs that you can walk through; that was clever. I also think the fake keycards are a neat idea, although I had a little trouble grabbing the right one at first, even though I knew which it was. They're just so close together.

re: mod
Hey, where's my pogo, anyway? I was hoping to get it in the first few levels. Anyway, I got stuck without one. Lower left level, I think it's the first transistor one. Just keep heading left and falling down at the start, you'll end up by two guys with spears, and a little pit with some ammo in it--I can't get out of there without a pogo or cheats.

Re: Great stuff
Wow this sure is a pleasant surprise...
I really like this mod, it's got it all: clear graphics, a nice storyline and challenging levels. Nothing about your mod is like really outstanding it's just that when all the elements are plain good the end result is a stylish, solid mod.

I like how whenever i die i feal like it was fair, unlike a lot of mods that have strange danger tiles or small hard level parts where you are most likely to die. The fake keys (well maybe those where kinda not fair but it doesnt matter) that turn into dangers where funny, you really had me laughing when I first grabbed that green one. However i hate the fact that you used this technique as i wanted to be the first to release a mod containing this idea. It seems that whenever a new mod is released it contains some of my own idea's making my mod less original as time passes....

Some minor critisizm: I didn't really like your map screen, too many stripes ruin the effect. Also, your sprites could use a little more animation. The biggest bother was the fact that keen didn't have a pogo, this wasn't mentioned in the story (he cant just not have it) but more importantly he needs it to escape from certain pits, wich otherwise result in a very ugly game over.

I'd rate this mod somewhere around 6.9, between KeenX and Y, but i haven't completed it yet.

A Mod For The Ages...
Incredible. And unexpected. Great work keeping it unknown prior to release.

There's a very Keen3ish feel about it, and that first level reminds me of that crazy platform maze in episode one of Jill of the Jungle. Very classy.

The logs are indeed a nice touch. I haven't come across tunnels in a mod yet (or else I haven't paid close enough attention). I only just noticed I didn't have anything resembling a tunnel in my own mod when I was putting together that 'defaulted' level just before I released it.

The levels are ingenious, from what I've seen so far (granted, I've only seen about two). Backtracking isn't painful, and there are all sorts of little areas that require a bit of maneuvering without getting irritating.

It took me a minute to work out what I was meant to do on that second level... certainly an interesting level style.

And the fake keycards--brilliant. I actually managed to get the real one first go, but I decided to grab one of the fake ones anyway just to see what would happen. Very amusing. Incidentally, exiting that section without running into the other keycard was a classy non-irritating challenge.

I enjoyed the RPG-like depth you effected on the map--top-down on a slight angle at the front. Nice. Though I second the criticism about the large empty space leading to the ship. Perhaps if it was a peninsula jutting out the top, rather than a weird line launching off at a tangent to everything else, it might look a bit classier.

EzJ I like how whenever i die i feal like it was fair, unlike a lot of mods that have strange danger tiles or small hard level parts where you are most likely to die.

Indeed. You seem to have a knack for non-irritating challenges, as opposed to infuriating evilness that some of us use quite frequently. Well done.

This mod is quite a piece of work. It's very Keenish--graphics, level design, quirkiness, everything (except the lack of pogo, but if Eazyjay's correct that was unintentional). I've learnt a lot from your style, and gained a few new ideas, and from Xky's comment over at Keen:Modding, it looks like he has too:

XR Some of those ground tiles look mighty fine to me--especially the way they change as they go underwater and border against the sky. Exactly, EXACTLY what I've been trying to do for my mod for the past MONTH. :-)

Excellent job.

When I open the zip file, there's nothing in it. Does anyone know why that might be happening? Nobody else seems to have had trouble downloading it...

NO. Pogo can be found later on one level.

Welcome. Also, too bad about that message; if DosBox doesn't work fast enough, there probably isn't many other ways left. :(
