Welcome!
Welcome to the Book Club forum!
In the coming days, we'll discuss great books with each other! The first book that we'll be reading is Lovelock, by Orson Scott Card and Kathryn H. Kidd.
Lovelock is a beautifully written story from the point of view of a capuchin monkey who's been genetically engineered to be as intelligent, if not more intelligent than most humans. His life is that of comfortable servitude. He's a witnesses, a living camera that records the lives of Earth's more prominent citizens, and his owner, the woman who's life he records and her family are leaving Earth to colonize a new world. Almost the entire book takes place in a small Christian community on board this massive vessile, and it's not much different from a normal town.
eK is the Moderator of this forum, so treat him nicely! I'm sure he'll be posting soon enough.

Here's how we're going to do it.
We're going to try reading the book in about 3 weeks to a month. I'll be creating some topics to discuss sections of the book in groups of 3 chapters. Each section will be ONLY for commenting on those 3 chapters and any before it to avoid spoiling the book for slower (or busier) readers.
Anyone else excited?

I won't be able to get it for about 2 weeks (when school starts), and the school homepage is down, so I can't check for sure if they have it
Er, yah. I'll catch up though.

Re: Welcome!
To get this book on short notice is almost impossible, I’ll still look around for it, but I don’t think anything will come of it. Though to prevent this from happening often and to all of us, I think it would be wise if we know what book were going to read about a month in advance.

I'll bare that in mind next time, though I figured it would probably be hard to find that book, especially for those who live in non-English speaking countries.
The next book will be super easy to get ahold of though, it's available online (you can read it off the net for free).

My library doesn't have Lovelock, unfortunately. I'll have to check with the English bookstore which will probably have it.

Re: :(
That sounds a bit like a sci-fi short story (written by some mid 20th century writer) about a mouse who is visited by extraterresrials who give him intelligence that far surpasses that of humanity (shall we say IQ=314?). I can't remember the title of this story.
Tragically, the mouse, after observing the stupidity of humankind for a while, gets so despressed that he throws himself into a mousetrap.

Well, can't the members of this club read the book with their own language, or do you all use English?

Trust me, getting translated versions might be just as hard as to find original ones.

Heh
I'm gonna get my copy from the Library tommorrow, hopefully I'll be able to get my mom to read it too. I've been trying to get her to read something by Orson Scott Card for about 2 years now.

Suggestion:
Why don't you have several catagories of books and read one book from each?

I just got the book, looks to be perfect for 3 chapter segments (12 chapters). The first 3 chapters round out nicely - great place to start discussion.
Anyone else get it yet?

Re: Welcome!
They didn't have it in any libraries, neither at the English bookstore, and not even at Avalon (a specialised sci-fi shop). I finally found a place that could order it, but it can take up to three weeks before I get it.
As Forge said, some advance notice could be helpful.

I know.
I'll try to announce the third and second books at the same time.
No one will have probs with the second, so no worries there.

Wow, just saw this new forum... I've been looking for a new book to read so I'll probably pick this book up. It should be fairly easy since I'm in the U.S.

Oh please, oh please not LOTR! I'm so bored with it!

Ghend howled, and all the flaming hosts of Nahgharash howled with him.

Err. It's not LOTR, and I've said repeatedly that it's going to be a classic, not fantasy.
LOTR is great, but it's so commonly read we won't read it here.

I did, it was okay, some plot holes and a made for movies story line sorta ruined it for me.
