Good news modders.
Some tutorials about making tiles have been released at Disguise's Tileset Resource. If you're not too familiar with making tiles or are just starting it should be very useful.

re: tiling tutorial
Woah--hefty reading material there (At least, it's too much for me to venture into at 1:00am...) but from what I skimmed, it looks great.

Only immediate reactions are: Jazz seems to be 32x32 tiles at 256 colors, Keen is 16x16 tiles at 16 colors--so many of the effects discussed like "Blur" or "Feather" are less applicable directly, but they at least offer good ideas as far as color technique goes.

[Edit: I just read the "Perspective" section--it really irritates me how incorrectly he demonstrated everything. Sure, the EDGES (left and right) of his platforms look great--but at the top and bottom of the ramps, regardless of which "perspective" he's using, they're STRAIGHT VERTICAL LINES! That's incorrect... he does it SORTA right on the "Diagonals" page, but even then, the correct view is placed next to another vertical line. Grr.]

A good thing to do for OUR modding cause (and believe me, I would if I had the time) would be to ScreenThief a bunch of shots from the Keen games and analyze how they did their tile stuff--anything from color theory to level detail to perspective... it's amazing how much those ID guys could do with 16 colors!!

Cheer for the great find, Joseph!

Yeah, that would be good. I've got quite good results with technique where you replace only colour1 coloured pixels with colour2 coloured. :) Too bad I haven't used that much..

re: Color theory
Well... what I meant by "Color Theory" was more along the lines of "How can I make a background that is nonintrusive yet intricate?" or "I want my background to have a moody atmosphere--but I don't want my mod to get nailed for using too many dark colors!" (haha)

I'm at work during this post (and my last one was at 1am... how ironic) so I don't really have access to the Keen4-6.exe, but I can think of a good example off the top of my head: Look at Keen6, the Dome of Darkness. The background's a squiggly PURPLE brain-like mass, right? Look more closely--there's a surprising amount of GREY in there, too. But the player glancing casually won't notice the grey or even think about it--they'll just say "Oh, it's a squiggly brain-like mass. Cool." Combine that with the sides of the Dome itself--look at the amount of GREY hiding in there, too... it's amazing how much the dark grey is ignored by our eyes. :-)

Also, many places in Keen5 have the "hazard stripes" with Black and Yellow--but there's quite a bit of Brown (the 'dark yellow') and Grey in them as well.

Any article I wrote on the subject would cover the governing of Greys and Shading to produce colors that appear to be more complex than the basic 16 color palette.

Probably the best example I could give would be the game Monster Bash's title screen. Both Johnny Dash's HAT and FACE are made from the same "Red" color--but because the HAT is using a Dark Red / Dark Grey for its shading, and the face is using other colors, it comes out looking like Skin and Hat, not a huge mass of red.

*sighs and stretches* Maybe if I've got more free time after Finals are done, I'll download ScreenThief and chalk up some webspace about this... it's an interesting topic for me! :-)

Yeah, I got your point totally, but I was just telling about a technique I used sometimes..
And hopefully you can get that site done sometime. It will be pretty useful.

Re: re: Color theory
If you want color theory, look at any games made for NES... that system only allowed for 16 colors on screen at a time (though the colors can change mid-game, something we don't have).

Games like Megaman have some amazingly colored and animated tiles for the limitations they have.

re: Ilsoap
Ilsoap, d00d, you're the animator of the bunch... you probably have more color theory (and the realization thereof) in your pinky finger than I do in my entire body! I'd be fascinated to read any and all articles you threw together on the subject. You did a fantastic job with the Shadowlands stuff, regardless of whether or not it was based off of existing art.

TMST would probably have a good lot to say, too, seeing that he's an artsy-type... but I haven't seen him particularly active in a long time.

Alright, here's a first attempt at some of the easier points of it:
