Opening game files in Windows Explorer
Hi everyone!

It's been quite a while since I've posted here - more than a year I think! You might recall when I was last here I posted a message about extracting game files from within Windows Explorer? As in you could open say, SOUNDS.CK1 as if it were a normal folder and drag the sound files inside it into Sound Recorder or whatever to listen to them. Well, I've done absolutely no work on that program for more than a year now, so I've decided to abandon it and release it as is. So if you're interested, you can visit

members.optushome.com.au/...eview.html

to download it. Keep in mind that it is incomplete, and many things don't work, but it is interesting to play around with ;) There's also a list on that web page of supported files you can open from other games.

So if you like the look of it and do decide to download it, then let me know what you think. Don't worry telling me about all the bugs in it, 'cos I'm not working on it any more so I won't be able to fix them (and most of them are Explorer's fault ;) )

Anyway, hopefully you'll find it mildly interesting! Let me know if you do anything useful with it!

Cheers,
Adam.

You can extract Halloween Harry / Alien Carnage files and then decompress them and converting .4MD files to .MOD files with members.iinet.net.au/~mar...xtract.zip

I actually managed to stumble across a comp.compression newsgroup posting yesterday where someone had reverse-engineered the PKWare Data Compression Library and posted some sample C code to decompress files created by it. Since HH/AC use the PKDCL, I thought I might try and write some really quick utilities and have a go at extracting the data chunks and getting the music to work properly. Grab the stuff here (70k). Use DJGPP to compile the sources.

The 4MD2MOD utility converts the extracted *.4MD files to playable MODs. Three of the MOD files are still broken (I've listed those ones in the makefile, perhaps someone out there would like to have a go at fixing them). I've tested the rest with OpenCP 2.5.0, though they should play fine with WinAMP.

So far, the 4MD files seem have two major differences from the MOD format: the sample lengths are stored as # of bytes rather than words and the period lengths are half what they should be (one octave too high). There's probably something else that I've overlooked that's needed to fix the broken ones.

As for MIDI files, there should be some utilities out there that can convert between MOD and MIDI formats.

Actually, scratch the message about some of the mods being broken - I tried playing them all in ModPlug and they all sound fine. Looks like it was a bug in OpenCP.

Enjoy

Ha, that's funny - those quotes you posted were following a message from me about the format. Well, I'll certainly hold on to that file for future use ;) Thanks!

I've downloaded your program, merged it into the registry, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. Any suggestions? (I've looked through the text files in the zip file, but there wasn't anything that could help me)

I assume you installed it in C:\Program... like in the readme? Did you restart Windows? What happens when you double-click on a supported file? What version of Windows are you using? You need admin rights on NT/2K/XP when you merge the file into the registry, but most people do by default anyway. E-mail me at malvineous<at>optushome.com.au if you still can't get it to work.

Cheers,
Malvineous.
