How did you get into Keen.
Well how?
Did you illegaal download it:pirate .
Was you a fan from the beginning.

Topic starter should beging:helmet
It was 1995 when I got my first computer and game: Crystal Caves the demo. I was obsessed I did nothing else than playing that game (yeah those were the (bad) days) . But there was a virus on the disk so I couldn't play it anymore. Around 1997/98 I started buying old cheap computer games (distributed by dutch companies like 'Linsoft'and Zoeff') from my pocket money. First game was: Commander Keen I Maaroned on Mars. Another obsession for me it was also the first game I finished. I wanted to get the other parts but I only could get my grumbly hands on Keen II. I drew a lot ugly Keeb pics (still own some) I lost both games :( ! Later I lent Keen dreams. I loved the idea of Keen in his pyama. Later I got the game by some way of accident. I played the game a fair and moved to other games, So it was in 2000 when I got the games Keen 4,5, and 6 illegal on a disk. However I only cheated and couldn't play Keen 5. Later that year I saw Keen 3 and again cheated :blush . In 2002 my obsession started again when I started to play the games again. I visited much Keen sites. Downloaded my missing parts of the series:pirate .
And I even visited the forum some times though I didn't know how a forum worked at that moment. I started buying games Keen games legal I know have: Keen I (twice) , Keen II(twice), Keen Dreams (twice), Keen V, Keen VI(demo) legal.
Some time later I registered on the forum.

That was a lot:slug
Ow and I can upload my Keen packages there are even some non-official Keen pics on some.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
Hmmm. :) Interesting topic!

Well, as you know my memory is really good, but it's really short. :) So, I post here what I said in the Commander Keen Newsletter interview.. Here's how I started keening and end up here:

"Well, when I was really young, my dad bought a new computer, it was something
286 if I remember correct. First it hasn't any games, but later I got Commander
Keen 1, and I was happy. :) Commander Keen 1 was awesome, all my friend were
sitting in front of our comp and playing it. I wasn't then very good at playing,
and I was in big trouble when I saw vorticons, or even gargs. I actually was
scared when I saw in the first level first time I was playing the game, a yorp!
It slowly came and I though something "Eeek! It's going to kill me!". Well, I
won't talk anymore about my first keening time, or this would be at least 1000
lines long text.. Well, then I got later the other Keens, and ofcourse played
them all many times. I played them long, actually in year 1998 if I remember
correct I bought Duke Nukem 3D! I played it and modded it until in year 2002 I
was surfing in the web. Well, for some reason Commander Keens came back on my
mind. I thought "Could anyone play Keen anymore?". Then I found lot's of Keen
sites. I surfed on them and checked lot's of news and other Keen related until I
found forum called Public Commander Keen Forum. It was very good find! I started
to read topics and thought "It would be nice to talk about Keen.." and
registered my name, KeenRush. I have never used it before the forum, I invented
it when I was joining, it has been very good name. :) If I remember correct I
started in Keen community with post about editing Keen. I had already found
level editors and started to play with levels, but I wanted to find graphic
editor. Later there came modkeen and modlatch, and in the same day when modkeen
came, I started to make Blade styled Keen TC. Well, I stopped it in some days
and started to make Yorphius II. That's because I've always dreamed to make my
own stuff for Keen when I played it when I was smaller."

Oh, and something to add: Now when I think about it, I think I bought Duke earlier than 1998, maybe even 1996! :o And now when I think about it - I have been really stupid when I have thrown those Keen packages and other stuff out. :( :garg

Well, once you start keenin' - ya can not stooop! :crazy

Oh, can't wait to see the pics Djaser! :)

Greetings from Bloogton Tower!

Re: How did you get into Keen.
Back in the days of DOS, me and my siblings got all sorts of DOS games. We liked them all, especially Kroz, Hugo, and Commander Keen.

When we got our Windows 95, we were stolen from the DOS age. We spent days on end playing the new "Generations Game" and we got hooked on Chip's Challenge.

Then one day, I was looking through my old disks, and saw: Commander Keen: Aliens Ate my Babysitter. I went through playing that again, but it was only a demo (don't ask me how I got that on a disc, I dunno). I also managed to find Keen 1 on a floppy disc, but for some reason all the sprites were all screwed up. They had static all over them, and the garg when it was in the light looked like a green Vorticon. I wanted to get the other Keen games, but at that point I only sort of knew what the internet was. Even if I wanted to go online, it would've taken a few days to connect through the program we had, Trumpet.

A couple years later, when we had a reliable internet, and I knew how to use it, I went on a downloading spree. I found Commander Keen, and downloaded 1, 4, and Dreams. That brought back memories. I played Keen 1 again, and to my surprise, all the creatures looked normal. I saw for the first time what a Garg was. Then I figured out an amazing thing-if you held Ctrl while pogoing, you went higher! (Yes I was a complete moron back then), This opened up new realms of possibilities.

Later, I tried to play Keen 4, but it kept crashing whenever you opened a level. This annoyed me, because although I did not remember playing Keen 4 earlier myself, my sister said it was an awesome game.

A few months later, I decided I wanted to get all of the Keen games. I did some internet searches, and not only did I find the games, but I found my way to the mb5517...there, I acted like a complete and utter moron, and eventually I ended up here. :)

ooh
my story's really basic, and similar to Dj's. in 3rd grade, got a Crystal Caves demo in a monthly software package called the "Software of the Month Club" (basically was a set of three 3.5'' disks that came montly--one was the catalogue, the other two had games)

Crystal Caves was great, so i ordered the full thing (all 3 eps) and the Apogee thing to do in those days was to release a shareware episode of another of their games with the full version... so with CCaves, i got Keen1.

at the time, i was very unimpressed--Keen handles like a broken remote control car compared to the grace and refinement of ol' Milo Steamwitz... so Keen1 just sorta sat on my shelf for a year or so.

in 4th grade, my dad brought home a new game called Commander Keen in "Aliens Ate My Babysitter!" and that game was the one that hooked me. played it through time and time again (regretably, always on easy... lol)

liked 6 so much, i got Keen4+5 soon afterward... and eventually i went back to Keen1, out of curiousity. didn't like it nearly as much, but i'll be damned if those Vorticons didn't give me nightmares... so i got eps2 and 3 just to complete my collection.

i didn't find out about Keen Dreams until i got online in 7th and 8th grade (i'd heard rumors from a kid in my 4th grade class, but i thought his deal about bunny slippers and boobus bombs was fake) so the only game i've really pirated is KeenDreams...

although the only working disk i have these days is Keen6. my Keen1-3 disk recently got melted by the sun (Windoze claims the disk is not formatted) and my Keen4-5 disk has been missing for years. :-( at least i still have all the games on my computer(s) :-)

that reply was a lot longer than i wanted it to be... garg :garg

Re: How did you get into Keen.
When I was five( year 1993 i think), I was lying down in bed one night and I heard some weird noises coming out of the basement. I went down and found my dad playing keen for. Keens pogo was making the weird noise. I immediatly started playing with my dad. I remember the well of wishes, the dopefish scared me. Well we finally beat it. But I wanted more. Then I got a cd with shareware games and saw Keen one on it. I showed it to my friend and we aventually beat it. But I still needed more. Then I talked my dad into purchasing keen 2 and 3. It took me and my friend forever to beat keen 2 because of the last level. Keen three was a major disapointment to me thow. Then when I was six I figured out there was a keen 5 so I talked my dad into bying that too. It took my forever to beet the last level. I remember crying and being really mad at ID because I couldnt figure out how to get to the secret level. Then (when I was 12) I started talking about keen with my friends and one of them discovered keen dreams. I didnt believe it at first but then when I played it I thought it was pretty good. Then (when I was thirteen) I went keen crazy and downloaded every keen fan game possible. Then some how for my 14th birthday my dad bought me keen 6(i dont know where he found it). Well, a week after that I joined the keen message board.

Oh yeah, when I talked to my friends about keen we made up all kinds of ideas about new keen games. Like one was about the bloogs taking over Mcdonalds and burger king workers helping the bloogs. To get to the secret level you would get in the toilet and flush yourself to burger king.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
Got keen 1, 4, 6 DEMO, and dreams on a game demo CD that came with a second-hand 486 from my cousin in '99 (I think). After noticing my brother playing the demo, I decided to try it, and was instantly hooked. I went online and the first keen site I found was "All You Can Eat Commander Keen." From there I went crazy--downloaded anything keen I could lay my hands on. About a month later I got the Keen disc from 3dRealms. Shortly thereafter, I found the old Keen forums through a link at Bloogology 314. Since then I've grown cold towards Keen on occasion, but something/somebody has always brought me back. :)

I used to play Keen 1 when I was visiting my uncle and aunt. That was in 1995 or something.
Five years later I remembered I liked this game so much and I downloaded all the Keen games from the Internet :evil
Just a few weeks ago I discovered the forum, really cool that so many people still play Commander Keen!

I remember back in 94, my friend had a computer with Keen4 installed on it. (And some wierd OS :| ) I was (and still is) obcessed with the Miragialevel. I still remember the feeling I had when I jumped trought the those glassdomes, and the feelings of jumping trought the clouds in the chasm of chills. The warm and silent feeling when I played the pyramidlevels, and they are still there inside me when I play nowadays :lol . I think Keen is just plain nostalgia all the way. For all the Keengames there is, the one I feel most about is the number four. Because that was my first contact with the Keenuniverse. :rolleyes

Always wanted to play the others. So like a yr ago I was on the inernet and found the other keen games. I am such a pirate:pirate

Then when i was looking for unnoficial games i found commander keen 2000 and accidently found this forum

Fun!

Anyway, sometime in the early 90's, my family got ck1. I would watch my dad play it ,always running away when he "dealt with" the vorticons. It's a scary world when your 3.

Sometime later, I got (somehow) Keen 4, and then played both intermittently, until I found the online Keen community in the middle of last year, and got really keen-crazy.

The most recent Christmas, I got all of the keens (legally!) in the ID anthology.

And that's my life story, relating to keen. It sounds a lot like the others, and, I'll bet, all the ones to come.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
Long ago, when I was a wee lad, we went to my visit some relatives in Vermont. They had a nice computer and lots of modern games there (modern being the early 90's). Included in that selection was Commander Keen 1, 4, and Dreams. Once my family finally got a new computer (time period = whenever a 386 was new.), I began buying (convincing my parents to, anyway) shareware games. Eventually, CK 1 & 4 were added to that collection (which ended up getting pretty big, actually). I probably played Keen 4 more than any other game. Zoom forward a few years, to once we finally got an Internet connection (and a Pentium, fortunately). I discovered that there was actually a Keen community upon finding the old CC314. Unfortunately, I didn't know what message boards were at the time, or I would have signed up. I later found the rest of the series "elsewhere". :pirate

And KeenRush, your custom title is entirely too long. It's compacting the rest of the page.

When I was like 9 my dad bought me some shareware floppies from computer shows and the Keen games were among them. I played them a lot along with other apogee games then sorta forgot about them for long time. Then 2 years ago during the summer I started playing them again and bought the registered versions. Around that time I was able to start using the internet in my room on my own computer so I ended up finding this place.

how did i get into keen,
before i got my new computer for my 18th. i used our old 386 which had episodes 1,4 keen dreams & the demo of 6, i played 4 a lot then i stopped playing keen after a while, then when i discovered this place, i am amazed that people still like keen, AFTER 13 YEARS, of course it was years later when i discovered the keen community, then i discovered game maker in a older topic, i downloaded it not knowing what it was, & then i decided i wanted to make games & then that's when i got the idea for pac-keen, & then i wanted all the keens, but didn't want to pay for them, so i illegally downloaded them.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
I started by my cousin (Kittyyorp's sister) played it when she was 7 back when it first came out. She when I was playing the game "rayman" when she told me about some games she played when she was younger: Keen, Froggy, Wolfenstien. So she tried to find the disk that had them on it, a few weeks later she found them & her dad loaded them on his computer, & for the first time in 1999 I played the game Keen1, half an hour later I played keen4 (she only had the unregistered copies). Then, a few weeks later Kittyyorp gave her friend a copy of these games, & he searched for more on the internet & found Keen Dreams, later we bought all of 1-5, & Kittyyorp's cousin (other side) we found out played keen when they were younger & we got EpisodeVI the finnal episode & my favorite!
That is how I got started on keen.

I bought a Gravis Gamepad - the original - and got the original game with it.
I loved it, and finished it the very same day/evening with my little sister.
I later played 2, 3, and 4, I think...
Later I got 6, then Dreams.
Even later I got to play 5.
No, I couldn't be bothered to make this an interesting read. :P
Besides, this is ages ago, it's hard to remember all the details, though I remember exactly where I stood at the time I was talking about the Keen games at school.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
Mine is also a long and probably boring story. :tired

My parents worked long and hard on Thursday evenings, and couldn't look after me until after 6 pm. So I went to the school's after school club. My school didn't put much funding into the after school as such, so we had a load of old DOS Pc's and one Windows. The Windows computer had a short queue, maybe one or two people, but the PC with Commander keen on always had a larger one, maybe three or four people. Soon after, I learnt that my great friend, Theo (who also went to the after school club, had Keen. So I fired up the ol' pirating muscles :pirate , and copied it over on 1.44" disks. Eventually, I got my sister hooked on it (unfortunately, that didn't last very long and she was too young for the forum anyway). She then got addicted to another game and so on.
Meanwhile, I still participate in the community - a bit - and enjoy Keen. The End.

I'm not really used to forums, I think this is called *bumping* cause this is so old, but I DON'T CARE. :D

I can't remember when I got started on Keen, but I know it was because of my sister's (ex) boyfriend. One day I came home with my dad (forgot where we were) and my sister and her boyfriend were on the computer. He had just installed a game program called Softdisk. It came with all these games, including Keens 1 and 4. At first I just thought it would be some stupid shoot-em-up space game. Then I saw my dad playing it, (and getting creamed,) and it looked cool.

Sometime in the future, after bugging him for a few weeks, we were able to get the rest of the Commander Keen series. Actually, I had stopped playing Keen for a few months. Then something came up on another forum I belong to about Commander Keen... short, and yet it still got me thinking about it again. I decided for some odd reason to search the net for Commander Keen and found this place.

Heres how I got into Keen.
Back in 1994 (I think) we got our first pc. A 486 which really sucked until we got 3 dos games installed. The first one was a drawing program, second one was a slot machine game, and third was Keen 4 and guess which one I played the most :D
Later on my 7th birthday I got a cd full of dos games and it had Keen 1,4,5 and a demo of 6. But for some strange reason the demo of 6 didnt work. So many years later I got Keen 2,3 on the Vorticons & Galaxy Cd and Keen 6. And thats how I got into Keen.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
Back in abou 1992, I got a letter from ID Software with the shareware versions of Secret of the Oracle and Wolfenstein 3D. It took my dad a while to get Keen working right, but when he did, it was heaven. I played it for hours on end, and begged him to buy me the other Keen games. However, my parents werent going to pay 90 bucks for computer games, and I eventually moved on to other games. 2 Years later, I discovered that my friend Geoffrey had Aliens Ate My Babysitter! He gave me a copy, and I memorized all the creatures. He also had a Keen watch, but I never actually got to see it. I played Keen 6 over and over, slowly absorbing all the secrets, like I had with Keen 4. Then, I got on the internet for the first time. I called up yahoo, and searched for Commander Keen. I visited my very first Commander Keen site (I think it was called Billy Blaze's Commander Keen page, and it had a starry backround). I quicky downloaded Keen Dreams and bought the rest of the trilogy. I would go on, but it gets kinda dull from there. If anyone ever has any questions about Keen 4, I know every secret there is, and I found them all before I knew about the cheats!

Re: How did you get into Keen.
I got into Keen a long time ago. It was our 2nd computer and it had Keen1. It was my mom who actually discovered this game and talked me into playing it. I remember being afraid of the yorps and getting myself killed as soon as possible. Later I learned to love the game. Me and my mom had even a little competition. Few years later, I think I were in 3rd grade then, I found out that a friend of mine had Keen4 and demo of Keen6. Being a nice person she gave me a copy of both of them and I got into Keenmania again (meaning I played only Keen for months). Few years later I got Keen5 from my cousin. That was mostly played by my other cousin and I didn't get to computer often. Later in the same year my mum found Keen 2 and 3. Keen3 is still my fav one. Then we bought a new computer and I haven't played Keen since. Until someone posted them here.

My cousin was playing it on her computer while I was at her house, and I saw it and I was like "Hey that looks cool! Can I play?"

And the rest is history.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
My dad brought home an old 5 inch floppy with Keen 1 on it which he had picked up at a store which was going out of business. Unfortunately, this was just after we had stopped calling the other disks minifloppies, so our brand new computer had no drive that it would fit in! We are a resourceful group, so he took it to work with him and copied it onto a usable disk and we were back in business. I remember that I was blown away for some reason, even though I had played other games that trounced Keen graphicswise. I played that for quite a while until my dad found a demo of Keen 4 on the internet. Needles to say (so why am I saying it?), it was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen, and while I don't play so much anymore, Keen holds a warm place in my heart.

Re: How did you get into Keen.
I got my first taste of Commander Keen when I had a PC-SIG disc. God knows where Dad got it, it was so long ago...

It was back in the good ol' pre-'95 days, when I would waste hours at a time sitting and playing many old games, including Commander Keen.

I clocked Keen 5 (I got that from a friend who copied it for me...:pirate ), but never clocked any of the others...:o

I hated the Gargs - they were scary (at the time)! I also hated ending up being eaten by the Dopefish. :deadkeen

I even came up with Time Keen and various scenarios back then, long before I had ever even heard of Mortimer McMire...

Ilian is the first of the Dark Apostles, the Mistress of the Void. Her realm is that of mastery of the Dark Arts, the powers of the Dark Symmetry. She is a powerful sorceress, and is believed to be the single most powerful of all the Dark Apostles, though her armies pale in comparison to Algeroth, and her siblings conspire to usurp her position in the favor of the Dark Soul.
