how did the keen community begin? commander keen is 13 years old. it's good that people still like commander keen. but why would you want to open up the community to a computer game character that's 13 years old

My guess is it started long before the game's age was even in the double digits...

Besides, a true classic never dies :)

I have wondered the same questions sometimes too, but never asked..
And I could open a forum for Keen, if there already wouldn't be one.. :)

Re: re: how did the keen communtiy begin?
As far as I know, the first major fan-made page devoted to Commander Keen was called "All-You-Can-Eat Commander Keen". It was pretty good, but stopped updating in '98. Then other Keen sites started popping up like "Bloogology" (put up by a girl named Thea), CrazyKeen's Commander Keen Page, and "Cerebral Cortex 314" (originally made by Geoff Sims). Cerebral Cortex collected everything that was known about Keen at the time, including *gasp* cheat codes!

Cerebral Cortext 314 also had a messageboard with InsideTheWeb, and slowly, more and more fans started regularly dropping by. Most were pretty law-abiding, and some weren't (just ask any of the old-timers around here about Peter Heardgahna :old ), but nothing was really that organized.

The Keen community then went through various stages. There was the "-ology" stage, when sites devoted to a particular Commander Keen enemy were quite popular (had one myself called "Lickology", devoted to the Licks... if it wasn't for that page, the Shadowlands animated series would never have happened). There was the cheesy fangame stage, started by a fangame called Commander Keen 2000, when it seemed like every week or two a new KnP, CnC or TGF game was popping up, though most of those never got past the "demo" stage. Then people started to actually get organized and make little mini Keen-game companies (like Vaportech and the guys that are still working on Isis II), and a Keen council was also attempted (though I think that's dead now, too).

Over this time, InsideTheWeb shut down, so the Keen community was forced to find a new messageboard system, and this ezboard was chosen. Some of the fans protested the move to ezboard (I seem to recall a whole string of messages saying "ezboard sucks!"), but the community moved anyways. Then Keen fans started making stuff that was actually worth awarding, so the Keen Awards took place last year.

And now, we're about here. And for some reason, people still enjoy Commander Keen. And I have way too many useless pieces of information stuck in my head. :rolleyes

Re: re: how did the keen communtiy begin?
Actually, we moved long before InsideTheWeb shut down.
Because of a not-so-nice person on the ITW message board (Neil McRae), the board got out of control and we had to get a better system. So we got a Commander Keen forum at the Jazz Mega Message Board (JMMB).

Then, the JMMB was cracked and went down for a long time. Not wanting the community to get disrupted, we set up a freeware UBB. Things worked out quite well, until more people (Korath, Tony Gies, Matrix and Neil McRae) went on a spamming spree. The freeware UBB didn't have such features as IP banning, so we moved to this ezboard.

It was set up by a person called Pimento, who offered to Thea (the admin of then) that he'd set up the board and then transfer admin powers to her. This was done. However, this was just a ruse in order to take over the board. Since Pimento created the board, he could reinstate himself as admin at any time. After a heated debate about whether several forums (including one called "Things To Do On A Rainy Day") should be added to the board or not, Pimento used this possibility and took over the board. His coup didn't get the acclaim he had hoped for, and the board was quickly filled with not-so-nice-things being said about Pimento. This led him to hand over the board owner privileges to Thea and leave the board, claiming he'd never come back again. He came back a few days later under another name.

On August 8th, 2000, Thea found out that she didn't have time to keep administrating the board full time, and granted me administration privileges. She kept hanging around though, but the time between each time she appears here has been increasing ever since.

Yeah, how many names have you gone through now, hinkle0? Orb, Pimento, Soggy Mop, and a buncha others (was Shikadi Salad one of them?). I've only gone through one name change, only because ezboard wouldn't let me have the name I wanted when I first signed up after the ITW board shutdown (No doubt I could get it now, if I really wanted).

Anyways, Ilsoaps History lesson basically sums it up. Ah the great Nostalgia Days of Neil McRae.

I don't even remember a life tragedy post. Fun... Probably wrote it though. I was/am a messed up little kid. :)

Names I've gone through? Other people can probably think of them better than I can. Let's see though... Orb, Pimento, Soggy Mop, Shikadi Salad, Monsieur le/la Bloog (not sure which; probably whichever one is the least correct)... Well gee, I had to add a lot to the list, didn't I? :| Anyone else remember others?

Don't forget that we had like 3 InsideTheWeb boards -- first there was the original one, then there was the special one for the elite. Then I think the original one moved for some reason -- and I know half the members had their own little boards (especially Neil) that they and like 2 friends would spend time in.

I wish I remembered it all better. I just remember joining the board and stomping around, calling people morons and such. I can't quite remember why now, but I'm sure at least some of it was justified.

Re: re: how did the keen communtiy begin?
There were lots of ITW boards. The more popular ones were
  • mb5517 - Geoff's first Keen board
  • mb332957 - A replacement for mb5517 after the administration password for the former was lost
  • mb555999 - Quest King's message board
  • mb662375 - Message board set up by Doped-Up Fish
  • mb?????? - CrazyKeen's message board

During the Peter Wars, new and secret message boards were created for the "elite" in order to have a "safe haven" without spammers. As Xtraverse mentioned, one of them was advertised as being "lemon scented", and the title of the board was "Error 404 - Page Not Found" in order to trick someone who dropped into it from examining it further. There was also a moderated alter ego of mb332957 maintained by Quest King and one called The Official Commander Keeners' Board. In addition to that there were about three others set up by Thea which had some traffic, one of them only had way old messages posted by Jack Deveraux et al.

Oh, and every Keen site with respect for itself had its own ITW message board. Bloogology 314 had one, all the "ology" sites in the Quest Ring had one, etc. Peter Heardgahna and Neil McRae created about one each day during their (his?) active periods.

After CC314 moved to the JMMB, mb332957 was abandoned. Quest King (who had the admin password) deleted all the messages and put a note in the board header saying that everyone who visited that board was gay. Someone reported this and the board was deleted for policy violations. mb5517, mb662375 and CrazyKeen's board were still used a little until InsideTheWeb eventually went bankrupt and shut down.

You're exactly correct Ilsoap. Awhile back I remember on the ITW boards everyone was saying how Keen was dying and would go down the dark abyss of forgotteness of something to that effect. And of course there were Peter, Neil and other idiots. It's much better now, with an overall better community, and the people seem to be nicer and more sane.

KeenRush... from what i remember of the old boards, it was basically every different board here all mashed into one long thread listing.

you had some threads about Pimento game development,
others asking about the easter eggs in Keen2000,
others asking "how do u get the 1ups underneath lifwatr oasis kthxbye"
and still others like "new Keen fan art here!" :-)

not to mention that everything was in a threaded style, so that the basic post was to the left, with replies subsequently tabbed out toward the right... some people even made use of the old (n/t) tag :-D

forums have evolved so much over the years, just as the internet in general has...

i'm glad to just be a part of it ^_^

That was an art on the old ITW boards. Only the first message in a thread would be displayed. For replies, only the subject was shown and you had to click on it in order to see the message. This led people to write the entire reply in the subject. InsideTheWeb would then add a "(n/t)" tag in order to show that there is no need to click, the entire message is in the subject.

Later, some people used HTML tags in the subject to make the (n/t) appear and look just like the real one, even if there was text . This was used for making "secret messages".

In response to KeenRush:

3D graphics - very little... the first gallery I remember is Bloogology having a place where you could post any Keen6 characters you made in 3D... I made a pretty pathetic version of a Slathering Grabbiter :)

mods - You kiddin? There were a few fan-made levels (one of my favorites was a level that had a so-called "Tetris Room" in it...) Of course they were all made with Keenedit, a DOS program where very tile was represented by an ASCII character. (Not the KeenEdit mod makers know and love now, of course.)

Flash - none... the first animation at all was an animated GIF of Keen going up against warcraft characters or something like that... at one point, Keen threw a Keen Dreams seed at a monster, and it turned into a flower... don't remember who did that

And there was a quite serious bug: The tiles were represented with the ASCII character corresponding to the tile value. At least in Keen 3, many levels contained a tile corresponding to the ASCII code for "clear screen". So you couldn't edit any of those levels since the screen was cleared while drawing the level, causing the level to show up as a garbled mess.

Ahhh, I remember Peder. Neil McRae isn't an ass anymore. I haven't seen Shocksund in a long time(the idiot got banned from Neil's board).

He came back twice while you was away under the nicks S3 and later Catz2. So he was banned twice:sick

Actually I've seen others by you, but what's so amazing about a hot topic anyway?

I've been coming (but not posting for want of how) since, god it's been a while.... 1999! that was it! I do remeber some of those topics, I remember Pimento. Does anyone know what happened to old members:

A.R. (first fan game!)
Snortimer
Crystallina (sp?)

Crystallina's still around..she just doesn't post much.
Snortimer came by in August to say hello, but I haven't seen him since.
And AR's getting maybe a little too old for this, I dunno :old
