Xky's Keen 1 Mod is Released~!!
Alright folks, the wait is over--it's playtested, it's double-checked, it's been run through Xky's self-criticism machine uncountable times, and the end result, i think you're going to enjoy.

pick it up whenever you get a chance, right here:

http://www.angelfire.com/ct/XkyGuide/keen/XkyKeen1.zip

it's hosted by AngelFire, which means that merely clicking on that link might give you an error or File-not-found type deal. if that happens, just cut copy + paste the address into your browser's destination bar, and then put a space at the end of it. that should do it for you.

if you are still having trouble downloading, post here and i'll email it to you with my shoddy little 56k ;-)

thanks for your patience, everybody--be sure to tell me what you think!

to pull a quote from the original Keen 1:

You cannot kill the [Android] Commander directly...

after all, this game is still essentially Keen 1.

does the block below with the "X" have anything to do with it? :)

Holy 314, Batman!
Wow, this is a very very good mod. The keen sprites are very well done, dare I say it, better than the original keen, and there's some pretty intense action. The second to last level brought a new standard for intenseness that I didn't think was possible in a mod. A point, though, all the enemies and keen are very nice, but the tiles have a tendency to be drab and odd looking. Plus, at least for me anyways, the text in the end sequence was the same as the original commander keen, and for some reason Mortimer Mcmire was giving me helpful yorp-sounding hints throughout the game via his little TV. Other than that, bravo.

Slasher : did you read the ReadMe.txt included in the ZIP file? you need to make sure to run XkyKeen1.bat, NOT Keen1.exe. Running Keen1.exe will give you defaulted Menus, Status Bars, Monitor Dialogue, and Ending Sequence. Running XkyKeen1.bat will change all of this. :-) sorry you missed that--go back and try it again?

KeenCommander : block below the X ? i'm afraid i'm not following you... :-$

like there's a block with an "X" on it, I've tried shooting it, and stuff, and I've put GOD mode on and followed the cords, but I can't find a switch or anything to shoot. Did I miss a level that gave an important info?

BTW your mod is rules the first Keen trilogy!

ok, forget I said anything. :) the game works perfectly for me, and I finally figured out how to destroy the android commander :) Thanks for the mod Xky!

Re: Box with an X on it...
i'm a little worried now--there's not supposed to be a box with an X on it!?

the final level, the farthest right on the world map, is a red box-looking building with a dome with an M on it. that's LEVEL16.ck1. in that level, you start in a passage of pillars, and have to navigate your way through the danger to get either the Red, Green, or Blue+Yellow gems. you can pass through to the final right-most area using either of the 3 passages. the final Android should be neatly boxed up inside his little command center, and there's a Sparky Mark II or two pacing around atop the command center. the cords spiraling from the ceiling should connect to the top of the command center in the form of a massive dark-blue Plug. there's several instances of these plugs holding up platforms in the levels... but the one above the command center should be SHOOTABLE. give it a shot.

can you get a screenshot of the block with an X on it? i'm stumped... and worried that there's something wrong :-(

anyone else having problems with my mod? :-\

Not me... it worked fine*, and it's excellent! The only thing I would pick on would be the look of the map tiles -- but everything else was great.

(However, I was disappointed that there wasn't a secret level...)

I hope you'll make episode 2 sometime... I want to see how the story ends!

Re: Box with an X in it!
ah!!! Whew--you had me going there, KeenCommander! lol that box with the X in it is just a girder structure i put there just to make jumping about easier. see the blue bricks up and to the left in that screenshot? that's where you've got to go to get to the plug :-)

sorry my map tiles didn't work out as well as i'd hoped, Mr. Durdin. glad the rest is up to par though :-D

Episode 2 is probably going to be a ways off for me--i'm engaged in other projects, mostly for college now. i just wanted to offer a new Keen sprite and a "what-if?" idea :-) glad you enjoy it!

A quick note about level design...
one thing that many of you may or may not realize about the default Keen1: the pogo stick was entirely optional! to the best of my knowledge, the entirety of episode 1 is completable without use of the pogo--i.e. all of the necessary jumps are 3 blocks high. many of the points and extra goodies are high up out-of-the-way, but if you're just going to beat the game, the pogo is optional. i tried to maintain that level design in my mod--thus the "X" girder that confused KeenCommander. it was put there to aid the jump up to the Red platform with goods on it. there were a few places that the jumps i made are 4 blocks high or more, but i let them slide here and there.

on a side note, there's secret areas scattered about the levels... did you guys find them? :-)

Awesome mod! Though I haven't completed it totally.. Just yet.. :) Pretty good work, I really like the Keen sprite.

Later added: I posted your mod on the CKV, so, people can download it from there too.. Tell me if you don't want it to be there, then I will remove it.

Who ever needs Doom 3, we have Keen 6.

Sorry about that :-P i didn't want to be confined to the nearly hard-coded X-Y coordinates of the teleporters. if i knew a way to change it so that my teleports went wherever, whenever, i might have added one. :-$

Cool
That is a really incredible piece of work, there Xky. I like this version better than the original!

There are a lot of little details that you didn't have to put into it, but you did, and it shows. Like the big red gears, you made two different animated gear tiles going in each direction instead of just using the same one to make the gears look like they were meshing into each other. Very cool.

I found a couple of minor things, but nothing that would make me rate this thing any lower than 10/10.

Objects in computer screen may be closer than they appear.

thanks for noticing the little things, Ilsoap :-) makes me glad to know someone's hunting and pecking the way i like to... but c'mon, be brutally honest here--tear it apart for me. i want to know what you did and didnt' like about it. that goes for everyone--i want criticisms so that in case i ever do another full-on mod, i'll make sure it's better than this.

The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the first level didn't stand out at all on the map (at least for me)...

:D WHEEEE!!!
What a hoot! Great new graphics!

However... the screens are all too big to fit in the screen mode for some reason. This leads to all sorts of ugly graphics bugs (I was unable to play past the 1st level).

Help me!

What I DIDN'T Like
What I didn't like... it's going to be a very short list, but here they are:

- Found a strange bug that sometimes, if you do a level with one of the four items in it, finish it, then do another of the four-item levels, when you check your status screen, it doesn't show the item you recieved anymore.

- The purple box level closest to the end can't be gotten out of without cheating. One of the ledges is one box too high. (Unless I'm missing something.)

- On the last level, unless you had played the original Keen 1 game, there'd be no way of knowing how to defeat Mortimer. It should be just a little more obvious.

- Could use a few more high point items, it's hard to get extra lives without taking big risks.

- The front title screen could have a bit more detail on it... it's kinda bland in comparison to the richness of the levels.

- That hazard with the red, green, and blue wires sticking down... in my opinion, it should be blinking or moving in some way to show that it is indeed a hazard (unless you didn't have any available animated tiles left).

- Lastly... no hidden dopefish!!! (or "ID" made with snacks)

Finally passed the mod today, by the way... the way you integrated your storyline with the one on the screen... very seemless. You should be very proud of yourself, that would have taken a lot of work (especially figuring out what to do with the lights on and off sequence in the original Keen).

I also like how the light from the lamps fade from light into dark... very cool.

Objects in computer screen may be closer than they appear.

It can, but it isn't hugely easy (but not hugely hard either): you need to stand on top of the boxes on the right (see pic) and do a running IP up and to the left.

I agree with that one.

More likely he doesn't have any tiles left (it looked like he used almost all of them).
Since he's using CKxPatch anyway, he could also have used my tileinfo editing program to make some more animated tiles.
But once you've bumped into those wires, you remember pretty quickly that they're not safe.

Re: Complaints
Thanks, Andrew, for clearing up how to get past that IP part. Looking back, i agree i shoulda added an extra ledge or something.

I honestly went through my levels and re-distributed points 3 or 4 times, trying to strike a good balance between traditional point-gathering and difficulty. i settled on about 8500 points per level, which adds up to an extra life every 3 levels or so. I figured that would be an acceptable method--especially considering the first 3 or 4 levels are absolute cakewalks. however, i'll make sure to bump the formula up to about 10000 per level--that's an extra life every 2 levels. that should make things easier :-) sorry about that, guys!

defeating the final Mortimer/Clone-- i figured it was a Keen1 mod, people would know what to do. i was also out of dialogue boxes, so i couldn't do too much.

The only thing that's really got me off my ball so far, is TMST: what the heck's up with your copy of the game? O_o;; you can't get past the first level? things are too big? what's going on?

The first level, on the world map, starts at the end of the "runway" that the B-w-B is landed on--upon starting the level, you jump off the edge of that 'runway' into the game--i thought it was a cute way to introduce things :-) especially since you got to admire your B-w-B before leaving... hehe!

thanks very much for the praise in graphics--it means a lot to me :-D

and for the record, yes, i had i believe 4 unused tiles in the entire set. i didn't really want to gamble with the TileInfo just yet, as i was still beginning with this whole hacking business, but if i do Episode 2, i'll definitely make use of it--i know my friend CheesyDave is.

Yeah, I played it, it's great! I really liked what you did with the Yorp, and the new keen sprite also looks pretty cool as well. The thing I liked most was what you did with the ending screen, the room Keen was in (his bedroom?) was excellent. Good work! And sorry I did not post back sooner, I was away for a bit. And no, I've got no problems other than that jumping one mentioned earlier (the distance)
