kMod: The Mod Development Studio (Programming ModCore)

kMod/ModCore Development Thread
kMod will be the most stylish and functional modding suite out there - but first we have to get through all the programming crap. So modCore (the command-line-operated core) will be programmed first (in C++). But kMod will be programmed in Visual Basic.

ModCore will be the name of the system in which a series of VBASIC DLLs are inserted into a folder and are activated in kMod (a la foobar2000).

I'm in. Making the core into an ActiveX control might not be the best idea, but we'll see.

Assembling? Mmm... Assembler Code
I'll do some of the Import/Export Filters, Graphic extractors, Playtesting
I'll also help code the blitting functions and all that.
Also; an ActiveX control is an idea. Perhaps multiple ActiveX Controls (eg. Vorticons Level Editor Control, Dreams Graphics Control)
MDI and Tabs could be quite hard wilthout Xceed Ultimate Suite; and I don't have any of those nice libraries.

Unfortunatelly I don't know VB at all. I could draw hi-color icons for you nothing else but I guess you don't need useless things like this in such an early stage.

Assemblify!
Graphics would be good in a stage nearer to finishing. I have a good idea for the logo and an awesome plan to make iMod infinitely extendable via importable forms.
EDIT: Proposed logo:

Has this project that kind of goals? If it has, I'd suggest to change the course; I have a bad feeling you will never finish the tool if you take other games than Keen there.. Level and graphic format cracking isn't that easy, you know.

Copy and paste your iMod image into Photoshop (the kMod logo will take more work) and do the steps described in the tutorial - use "Blending Options". It works on any layer.

I don't have any documents. I could donate perfect VB module for saving and loading, in case I wouldn't have lost my programs week earlier. But adurdin's Windows KeenEdit has sources, so you can check there the format. I'd like to make some doc of the format (and probably will), maybe when I'm home sometime..

Tell me when you get the level format! It'd be interesting to see Keen's maps in my game. This way it could make it possible to convert them...
It'd only work with maps from 4-6 though... is there a known format for them?

Boeing747 was getting some way towards creating a Keen 4-6 editor - all he needed was the compression stuff, which I did. (Sort of unsuccessfully, I plan to redo them for kMod)

Re: wtf?
I find VB an easier language to write stuff in because I'm insulated from Windows programming, and becuase I don't have to remember to put semicolons at the end of lines.
Also, I can prototype faster in VB.
The editor cannot, at present, import exisiting levels. This is because there is no Carmack [de]compression method fully completed, as I have mentioned several times.

Probably neither of those.. Besides, adurdin wrote modkeens. (So, it probably wouldn't make him know more about modding if he'd wrote 3.0. )

If you guys are looking for info about the Keen file formats, the complete sources for ModKeen and Tedsetup are available from me, along with some docs I wrote describing the format.
Not to mention that the TED5 source (which has Carmack compression) is available from Apogee, and the Wolfenstein 3D source (which has Carmack decompression) is also available (perhaps from Apogee also--I don't remember).

The Passing of the Torch
grafix5000, you can now lead modCore development. I've got some other stuff to work on right now; although I'll still be really involved in it. And when kMod is ready to do, I'll definetely lead that. And if it's possible, modCore will be a command-line operated program, and that'll be open-source. But kMod, however, will not be open-source.
