Secret in keen4
I found something relatively minor, but fairly new lurking within the depths of keen4. As some of you probably know, if you turn clipping off and go below the screen on the world map, then save your game and load it, you'll find a strip of blue, along with the four frames of the Miragia animation. One day I used the F10 Y cheat, and discovered something else: there are blocks in the shape of the word "subset!"
Does anyone know of anything like this in any of the other games? I know that you can get into the underground area of keen6 by using the same technique.

Whoa, never seen that before. Interesting.
After seeing that, I had a quick look in TED... I did a tile search to make it easier to see.

Re: Secret in keen4
Ah, I know those map things, I was pretty suprised when I found out that saving in the map level border and loading and so on.. Cool!
But that "subset" thing I can't remember I would have noticed. Dunno, but it's pretty interesting! By the way, it looks like "TSUBSET!" to me.
What it does mean? Somekind if "inside-joke" of the Keen team?

True, it does look like 'TSUBSET!' there. In game though, the first T is not as noticeable.
So, which one is it supposed to be... 'SUBSET!' or 'TSUBSET!'...

Re: Secret in keen4
You can use the same trick in some levels to reveal the "block" or "edge of map" pictures. I used it one time in Crystalus and found some code sticking out of the bottom (below the edge of map block). I'll see if I can get to it again and take a screenshot.
Edit: It took me a few minutes, but I figured out how to do it in regular levels. In Crystalus, I turned clipping off at the beginning and fell straight through the bottom of the room, into another one. I had some interesting results:
apparently, when the "camera" is not focused on the area keen is in, the "scrolling" action doesnt stop at the edge of the level. When the "camera" is relocated (after you save and load) it isn't instucted of any boundaries around keen, so it starts with him squarely in the middle (or as close to the middle as possible, depending on additional boundaries). That's my theory.

I don't know much about the inner workings of this game, but I think this is some sort of Sub-Tileset for setting the tiles to be used for Miragia and such. Hmmm... where's Adurdin? He'd probably know. If I cared more I'd research it, but I don't care to know.

Re: Secret in keen4
The reason you see Miragia there is simple--the level you see in the plains is simply a sprite that reads the tiles from a specified location of the map (the place RoboBlue found by accident) and cycles every second or so. I'm sure these coordinates could be changed through patching.

Very interesting... Do you think it would be possible to do that to other levels too? (assuming we could patch and edit the keen4 graphics)

Re: Secret in keen4
So, does that "tsubset!"-thing meant that?
Yes, and those are for Miragia animation, like xtra said. I'm not sure can we do that for other levels, but I have a feeling that's specially coded for Miragia.

Yeah, I know... I just figured everyone already knew that, so didn't bother pointing it out

Hey guys! I'm back! Man, I gotta get back into keen!
Yeah, I'm not surprised even if almost every keen fan knew about that. There's also a hidden elevator shaft at the top of the omegamatic, but it's nothing really.

Such secret in keen6
I found such secret also in keen 6. Start the game, press F10-N (No clipping), go lower than low on map, save game, load it and you will be on other part of map, with levels Guard Post one, First dome of darkness, Second dome of darkness.

That's because that is where the underworld is stored on the map, but there are scroll block tiles between the areas.

Re: Such secret in keen6
The camera works by scanning each row or column of the level as keen progresses. When a loaded game is restored the camera is placed around Keen with some programmed limitations. When Keen moves the camera may scan a limitation causing it to 'flick' back.
Keen often cannot see off the world map due to programming limits. One programming error where this breaks down is the LAST board on crystalus. Stand on the board and look down, then press enter. After the status box clears you should be able to see down right of the bottom of the level, past the 'edge of map' tiles.
t subset stands for tile subset; part of a map or tileset refered to by a program (i.e IF sprite#33 = ANIM4 THEN DRAWTILE 333,334,386,387) It is common in most Id games, biomenace and dangerous dave have little door parts on the bottom of their levels for reference.
I know more if anyones interested.

The very down of Lifewater Oasis
>try saving near that mimorck in lifewater oasis near the council member...
I tried to to so. And i have seen many points, mimrock and "EDGE OF MAP" pictures at the very down of this level. That part is splited by scrollblock. That's why you can't see it unless you saved game there and reloaded game.

I know that; its a licensed Keen engine, but it still uses the same system.
