Open the Command Prompt (start, programs, accessories), and run VDMsound from there. Then run Keen. The sound is all scratchy, but it works.

I am an advanced prototype of his kind, with a special high power laser cannon.
Or do you mean the human? I'm a member of his species, I guess. At least I think so.

Re: DOSBox
Try a nifty open-source program called DOSBox. I can't remember where I heard about it (I thought it was here), but it's sort of a DOS emulator. If you run any Keen game through it, sound will work, although things load a bit slowly.

run vdm sound
After installing VDM sound you use it by right clicking the program you wish to run then from the menu sellect, "run with VDM."

Problem with VDM sound
On another note, the controls are REALLY sluggish when I run VDM. Is there something I can do to fix it?

Commander Keen in Windows XP DOS Window
Glad to come across this forum for us old Commander Keen lovers!
As to the topic of the missing sound in XP; this might be a bit pricey for some people, but if you still do a lot of DOS games, you might find it worthwhile to invest in VMWare. It'll run various operating systems within a window, including DOS. I use it as a software developer to test multiple operating systems, but have found it useful for these kind of compatibility problems.
Hope this helps someone out there,
Mike

Getting sound to work in XP
Sorry for the confusion regarding my post about VMWare -- it's located at www.vmware.com, and the likely choice for most of us would be the VMWare 4 for Windows, Workstation.
Again, it's a bit of a pricey solution, and requires quite a bit of memory, but it seems to solve many compatibility problems I've come across with older games. (Some newer, more sophisticated games, on the other hand, are better played on your principal operating system (2000, XP, etc.))
I notice someone (on the net) has taken it upon himself to write a Keen 7, using Quick Basic. It's not too bad, but would be great if it could be ported to C++ or .NET for better longevity. Good luck to anybody attempting the same!
Hope this helps,
Mike
