Re: Keen wav files
i forget what format the files were originally in, i don't think they have to be wav files, i think they just have to be a file type recognized by windows...........

Looky at What I Found!!
If you are a pround owner of the Keen Combo Galaxy and Vorticons CD and love the sound when keen dies then you are in luck. There is a file called keend3.wav and it is that sound. Just copy it on over to your hardrive in the appropriate place and set windows to have it as your startup sound. (If you have winamp installed on your computer then windows calls it a winamp media file)
Now everytime you use windows it will bring back all those wonderful memories of all the times you have died while playing Commander Keen!

Keen Wav's
In Doom 2 there are 2 Commander Keen sounds which you can extract using a utility like Wintex. Search it on a search engine.
durdin.net/andy/keen/Gavare
Here's the source code of a program that can make 16-bit PCM samples of the Keen 1 soundfile. On my site at www.student.tue.nl/u/a.f.smeijers/sfp there's a program that extracts the sound from Keen 2 & 3 so you can make 16-bit PCM samples.

Re: Keen Wav
The sound files are in a similar Adlib format as the music, right?
If so, they could easily be turned into wave files by using something like Winamp.
So, does anybody know how to extract the sounds from the game?

Re: Wav files
Again, this works for the music, only _might_ for the sounds.
In Winamp, click on the "O"-thingy (Options menu), and open your "Preferences".
There look for the entry called "Plugin", once in there for "Output".
Choose the "Diskwriter plugin" or whatever it's called, and from then on the sound won't be outputted by speaker, but written to file.
Oh yeah, doubleclick the pluging to change the settings (=path).
I only just installed Winamp again last week, hadn't used it for at least 1 year, so there's probably better sources of information about it than me.

Re: Keen wav files
Not that I think id Software will care a lot, but isn't offering sounds from the game just as illegal as offering the entire game, or graphics, or any other part?
Of course Dopefish has been recreated a number of times, inluding some versions based directly on the original art, so like I said, I don't think id will care, but still, technically it's not allowed.
(Every person believing it's legal to download Keen for free after doing whatever lest paying is one too many.
That other thread was saddening!)

Keen4+ Sound Player
There is some source code here forums.3drealms.com/ubb/u...6&t=001303 for a program that plays the sound effects for Keen 4+. I couldn't compile it so I don't know if it works.

Re: Keen wav files
Doesn't anyone else have an SB Live! sound card? there's an easy (but clumsy) way of getting ANY sound out of commander keen.
The Creative Recorder that comes packaged with the sound card software can record "What U Hear" meaning it records a perfect replica (no background sound) of whatever you're playing. you can then edit it with windows recorder and voilla!
I've thought of doing this, but it would take too much time. :P

Does the Creative Recorder only come with the SB Live! cards?? I have a really old sound blaster card that came with a bunch of creative software but I don't know if one of those will do it.

I've had some for ages...
I had no idea so many people wanted the sounds! I went through about a year ago now and got quite a few of the sound effects out of Keen 4/5/6. All my friends still laugh at the "happy sounds" I use for my Windows events ;-)
I didn't exactly extract the sounds, but because I have a Sound Blaster Live too I can do "loopback" recording - i.e. I can play a digital sound and record it without losing any audio quality.
But recording "What-U-Hear" does actually add a small amount of background noise because it's also recording the analogue CD, TAD, etc. inputs.
The SBLive doesn't have FM chips like old sound cards, but instead has an FM emulator, so all the keen sounds come out as digital data - and I just had to record from the "Wave" device and I had some Keen sounds. I used Goldwave to "cut" a few levels worth of sounds into individual files.
So that the quality was nice I recorded them at 16-bit 44kHz mono, and there's 22 sounds in a little under 2MB. If you all still want the sounds, I could try to find a place to stick them for a while...

URL for Keen sounds
Ok, I've finally got around to "preparing" the files, and hopefully this URL will work:
adamsrealm.virtualave.net...sounds.zip
(1.4MB)
Yes, I am using a counter script to get an idea of how many people download the file, so please don't try to bypass it (because it's not that hard to ;-)
There are 21 sounds in the ZIP (I removed one version of the Keen 6 Ammo sound, leaving a "touched up" version behind which sounds a bit better.) Also, the "Find Something Good" sound (Keen 4, Princess Lindsay) seems to have gone a bit weird - it sounded alright in the game, but it didn't record properly for some reason. But the rest of the sounds are ok. Please let me know what you think of them!

The sound I'm looking for in particular is the one when the Shockshund shoots that big blue glowy electric thing-o-death at you. I'm downloading the sounds right now, I hope that it's in there.

I can also record them with better quality (no offense ;) than that, and can modify them. I wrote a little song using the sound of those wall-mounted zorchers from K6 at different pitches.

I will. It's on my old computer, though, which has no monitor and no place to live except the closet. I'll get a monitor for it soon.
