What PC Games Do You Play Nowadays?
I mostly ask this to get some ideas about some games to get my hands on. I can't seem to find that many games outside the Strategy and Adventure (and occasionally Racing/Driving) genres that I relate to anymore. These kinda games aren't good for unwinding!
My 1GHz is sitting here mostly going to waste because I only have like five games that challenge it. I've browsed all over the place looking for new ideas, but it seems the same old stuff gets reviewed in most magazines and websites, and there's not usually a very wide selection available in stores around my area (they have most of the mainstream stuff, but nothing remotely obscure).
Most recently I've played and completed Uru, and dabbled in Warcraft III, SimCity 4 and Age of Mythology. Just got my hands on the RCT2 Triple Thrill Pack today (legally ), which is looking to be quite tasty. Hopefully soon enough I'll have Locomotion, Chris Sawyer's latest contribution to the SimScene.
Judging from the massive amount of DOS games I've collected over the past year, I'm sure there must be a huge abundance of 'modern' underdogs around. Or maybe I've just become too picky and overlook way too many games..
Sooo... <insert thread subject here>

Re: What PC Games Do You Play Nowadays?
I rarely play games any more, if at all. Most of my computer time now is spent looking at Newgrounds stuff and coding PHP gizmos (latest gizmo: a PHP script that finds all the images in its directory, randomly chooses one and lets you browse using Previous/Next)
The last game I got stuck into was The Sims 2. Before it was SimCity 4, then RCT 2. (I like strategy/sim games). Now I'm planning on buying a AMD 64-bit beast to replace my current PC, but it will only have onboard graphics. No more serious gaming for me, just coding and maybe some Keening. Must play Keen...

I can't think of any PC games I've been genuinely excited about since Lemmings and The Incredible Machine died off... those games were my lifeblood when I was about 12, right along with Keen. If you haven't already gotten and played through them, Humans, Lost Vikings, Contraption Zack (not as good), and Creepers are all good investments of download resources--but again, those are all DOS games.
For the most part, Xky's video game time lately has gone to his GameCube... I used to be a slave to Animal Crossing, which stole 4 months of my life during the past summer and contributed greatly to the tile design in XkyKeen3. Mario Sunshine's not terrible and can be fun if you give it a chance, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is decent once you get used to the way the Hunting levels work, and that Zelda Wind Waker game really hooked me a year ago. As for what I actually still play after having beaten, I'd say F-Zero GX is a great investment, and you can't really go wrong with Smash Bros. Melee. Aside from those, I'm starting to pick up Cubivore again, and sometime soon I'll need to return to the game of Final Fantasy VII I started, after avoiding the game for years.
Practically all the free time I've had lately has been invested heavily in Blizzard's mindless time-waster that is Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. It's something I can do to lose track of time and get sleepy (because I don't play hardcore, and I tend to play party-friendly characters, like a Conviction-based Paladin)... Back when I played on Battle.net more often, I had a level 94 Amazon with close to 1800% extra gold from monsters--there's nothing as rewarding as killing a champion monster in Hell difficulty and seeing 50,000 gold spill out in a neat little pile. Ka-ching. :-)
Recent games that've come out and looked interesting to me included Half-Life 2, mostly because of the physics engine and mod-happy programming (I had some fun toying with maps for HL1 like 5 years ago)... If you've never played it before, Escape Velocity: Nova is a free demo download which is fun galactic trading and silliness... Gish is an excellent demo download for the 2 player Sumo mode--if only it was more players via network... If you're not running XP and are still on 98, Interstate 76 has a plethora of custom maps for download and can be quite fun. If you ARE on XP, try to find 1NSANE, which is simliar to I'76, but without weapons. (both are multiplayer/LAN things)
Recently I came upon a BitTorrent file for Puyo Puyo Sun, which is a tetris-like puzzle game which is a LOT of fun, but entirely in Japanese (which turns some people off)... emulator versions of Super Puyo Puyo Tsuu for the SNES aren't hard to find. ;-) Puyo Puyo is great.
Uhhmmmm what else can I point to... I really do play more console games than PC games these days. A couple friends of mine and I burned through last summer with the Baldur's Gate and Champions of Norrath for PS2, and (assuming you have the cash to supply all the GBAs) 4 player Crystal Chronicles for the GameCube is a blast. We've been meaning to try out the Zelda 4Swords adventure because we're starting to tire of CC... and I hear there's a 4 player PacMan thing somewhere.
SinglePlayer games, though... those are the tricky bunch. Phantom Brave and/or Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the PS2 are very strategy-oriented, cutesy-yet-dark games (I'd recommend Disgaea strongly over PB, though)... if you're more the action-rpg type, Star Ocean: Beyond Time (or something like that) for the PS2 ate one of my friends alive and I didn't see him for 3 weeks...
PC games tend to be FPS's hardcore these days, though. I heard good things about FarCry, and one of my friends is a huge Doom Legacy supporter... and there's always Half-Life 1's TFC for goofy fun or Counter-Strike if you're like that (I'm not). There was a nifty little top-down 3rd person shooter called Crimsonland which was fun to watch, and there's always the Jumper! and Jumper!2 games out there for download. Another friend of mine is really looking forward to Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.
Okay, that's enough rambling. That's all I can think of, besides Keen mods, which continue to be the most fun I have these days. KEENRUSH RELEASE YOUR FREAKIN' MOD! (please)

Re: hum.
most of the time on pc i would play knights of the old republic, jedi academy, keen , and some old adventure games like monkey island. Still am waiting for tomorrow to get half life 2.
For gcn I always play some good old matches on smash bros melee and timesplitters 2. I also suck up alot of time on all the sonic games for gcn (mega collection, adventure2, adventuredx, heroes), beyond good and evil, viewtiful joe, and paper mario 2.
The end is near. An evil force returns. And only Commander Keen can stop him, but this time he must team up with a super sonic hedgehog and a two tailed fox. Follow the adventure:Dimension Chaos

Re: hum.
My computer isn't up to snuff, so it's very rare that I play any new games anymore. However, digging through my old favorites I find:
- System Shock 2. Probably my favorite game ever. In case don't know, it's a first-person hybrid action/RPG. I've played it tons of times, and never get tired of doing so. Of course, it was released about 1998, and is nearly impossible to find in stores, so perhaps other means of aquiring it would be easier.
It's worth it, I assure you.
- The Thief Series. More incredible games from Looking Glass Studios (though Ion Storm did the newest one, Thief: Deadly Shadows), you can't go wrong with these babies. Unfortunately, my computer can't handle Deadly Shadows, but from the demo I played on a friends computer, this game is loads of fun. For sure though, Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age, the first two of the trilogy, are highly worth picking up if you can find them. (Thief: Gold, a "special edition" of Thief: The Dark Project is an especially good find...though I've heard it's kind of rare. Thief 2 has been re-released as a budget title around here recently, and is fairly easy to find.)
And those are my recommendations! Not exactly taxing to your system (except for Deadly Shadows), but still awesome games.

How good are you at AoM CS? I got the expansion and it is not as bad as I first thought. I'm not a too great player though
Thanks to Xmas, our little home-LAN has been made stronger, and now we can play most our games without great lag.
I play what I see first when I switch the PC on, but mostly: Battle of Endor, Battle of Yavin, X-Wing, Age of Mythology: The Titans, Age of Kings: The Conquerors (mostly on LAN), Ultimate Stunts, and Red Baron 3D (mostly Multiplayer)

Actually Total Annihilation is the greatest RTS ever if you ask me, but I haven't played that in aeons.
I am supposed to play UT2004, but I don't seem to get much of that done these days either.
Nothing much else at the moment, though I just finished Sanitarium a few days ago.

I'm currently playing The Sims 2, and I wish to purchase Doom 3 when the price decreases. $90 is just way too much. I mean, Half-Life 2 was $68 a week ago. :-o

The campaign is too easy. But you can find out how to play random maps - it's not that complicated.

Re: What PC Games Do You Play Nowadays?
First of all, you have to try Gish. It's the most bizarre thing I've ever played. You play as Gish, a twelve pound ball of tar. From the manual:
"A Sunday stroll with his lady friend Brea [she's not a tarball -- she's cute though (kinda' thick {do australians say that?})] goes awry when a shadowy figure emerges from an open manhole and pulls Brea into the ground below. Following Brea's calls for help Gish suddenly finds himself in the subterranean sewers of Dross, a long forgotten city filled with twisting corridors, evil traps, and some of the most demented creatures imaginable. [many of them are blobby and seem to involve zippers]
With his gelatinious structure as his only means of defense Gish must follow the echoing cries of his damsel in distress deep into the earth below. What freakish creatures dwell in this subterranean land? Who is Brea's captor? And just how far down does the rabbit hole go?
Life isn't easy when you're a 12 pound ball of tar...."
It's a platformer, but it's got crazy physics. Get yourself the demo: chroniclogic.com.
Also, I love Thieves 1 & 2. American McGee's Alice is bizarre. Project Nomads looks intriguing, and I of the Dragon is promising, judging by the demo. Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project is a fun platformer. Space Tripper (by PomPom) is a fun time waster, and Starscape (by MoonPod) is amusing. It has excellent music and cutscenes. So do the Thief games. The Mechwarrior 4 games are pretty good, as is Descent 3, although it isn't as great as the first two. Fallout: Tactics is a lot of fun. I never got to finish it, since my CD 1 (required to play) spontaneously died. How 'bout you get the game then send me a replacement copy?
I'm drawing a blank now.

Unfortunately I like to play with a story line. I did play random maps but they (and the game in general) bored me for some reason. Really sad because I like the subject and was a fan of the previous games which I played a lot.
Now I'm thinking of it, I played Ratchet and Clank a lot lately. Great Keenish stuff about cartoonish alien worlds, imagine Keen wandering trough them instead of this duo.

I don't think so; you might have to get it online. I'm gonna buy it as soon as I have the cash. I just bought a new video card, so I'll have to wait a little bit. I'm just playing the demo now. Over and over.

Gish
Gish... hehe... I bought it last summer on recommendation from a friend, and I can honestly say it was worth the money for the 2 additional Sumo levels... and... not much else. The single-player game isn't particularly difficult, and doesn't really include much to keep me playing. I really enjoyed the 2 player Sumo mode more than anything else the entire game had to offer--all the other multiplayer modes were not worth playing more than once, except maybe the Pit/Deathmatch one, but Sumo's so much better. I still haven't beat the single player mode, but for some reason I can't really get into it.
I'd strongly recommend just downloading the demo and playing with it for a while--because, really, those 3 levels they give you have about as much cool stuff as the first 20 levels have (and those 3 levels are included in that spread)... and you get 1 level of Sumo for free--it's a wonderful deal. I'd say to only purchase the whole thing if you're REALLY addicted. If I'd known the other multiplayer modes were so worthless, I probably wouldn't have bought the game.

Re: Gish
I'm getting excited about Earth 2160, an up-and-coming RTS game. As you probably know by now, I am obsessed with RTS games.
My favourite game at the moment is Axis & Allies (PC version), a rather enjoyable WWII game. You get to play as the UK, US, Germany, Soviets, or Japan. My favourite sides at the moment, ironically enough, are both the United States for the Allies and the Japanese for the Axis.
Australia, n. A country lying in the South Sea, whose industrial and commercial development has been unspeakably retarded by an unfortunate dispute among geographers as to whether it is a continent or an island.

I'm still buying Gish, even if there's not anything spectacular in the rest of the game. To tell the truth, I suspected there wouldn't be. I just enjoy playing and making Gish fly around the screen, and some new terrain would be welcome.

Lots of them.
Mostly I've been playing Unreal Tournament 2004, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale I and II, Baldur's Gate I and II, The Longest Journey, various Sonic the Hedgehog games, Lemmings Revolution, Lemmings 3d, Lemmings, Commander Keen 1-6 [of course], Duke Nukem I and II, Hocus Pocus, Magic Online, and Tron 2.0.
I play all of those, but I'm usually playing UT2k4 or NWN lately. I still play and like all the others, of course. I just can't exactly play them all at once. Doesn't work too good.

Huh? I'm not in a clan at all, actually. I go by Damager in Unreal Tournament, but you probably already knew that. I've thought about joining one, but I haven't, yet... maybe you were thinking of Populous? I'm in TDM [The Dark Masters] there. That is, I was, until it switched leadership a few months ago. Haven't played in a while anyhow.
And I forgot to mention I've been playing Knights of the Old Republic a lot as well. I knew I was forgetting something...

I noticed your link to Metallic Star, quickly browsed through it, and thought I noticed 2 people's names, Damager and Metallic Star.
I was wondering which one you were.
I figured it was a (momentarily) tiny clan, 1 member with the same name as the clan, but... I figured wrongly.
Sorry, I should've read more closely.

BBalazs How good are you at AoM CS?
I've only played it a couple of times, so at the moment not very good.
Xtraverse Starcraft, the greatest RTS ever
Indeed. I love StarCraft... brilliant game, it be. Makes for some wacky LANage.
Retodon8 Actually Total Annihilation is the greatest RTS ever
I've never played TA... I remember I used to hate it for some reason, back in the day. Kinda like I used to hate alot of music...
lemur [she's not a tarball -- she's cute though (kinda' thick {do australians say that?})]
Yup.
Quite a curious thing... most of the people I've asked outside of the forums don't play that many games these days either. Kinda sad... I miss the good ol' days where you could boot up the puter, and up would come a nice, coloured ASCII box with the latest games right there in front of you... couple of keypresses later and WHAM, quality, replayable gameplay.
Still haven't figured out why it is... I spoke to Victor about it the other day, and the best we could conclude was that PC games on the whole take more effort in the early stages, which significantly reduces their replay value...
Of course, there's always the mainstreamness of the Internet we can blame... so much spare time to be spent pulling up all these pages about anything we want to know or create or while away our boredom...
Hmm...
Aaanyway, I tried out Gish and Ultimate Stunts. I dunno how the hell one is supposed to play the latter properly... seems very betaish... either that or they've focused way too much on the physics and not enough on the gameplay... if that wasn't the case it'd actually be quite a nice game.
The former. Two words: Pure. Class. I can't stop laughing at Gish's facial expressions, and those crazy little enemies with their mindless muching and glaring and getting-crushedness... this is one tripped out game, just my style.
Project Nomads sounds interesting... I'm getting my cousin to download the demo.
I was cruising through my Abandonware folder the other day and stumbled across a game called BulidingPanic, which is awesomely trippy, though it does induce much rage from me, as such reflex-happy games do. It's not a hardware-intensive game, but it's not DOS and it's afforded more pure fun than I've gleaned from a game in a while.
Well, my faith in the games industry has been marginally restored. Still not a whole lot that pushes my 1GHz, but at least the outlook doesn't look quite so grim now.

I'm looking forward to getting my maxed-out AMD64 powerhouse (eats up a large portion of funds, but hey ho) which will be used for server-side developing. My laptop will continue to be used for playing games. I may set up a reliable DOS/Win95 Keen-o-matic for old games, which I'll also install Full Throttle, Sam and Max and Day of the Tentacle on. (The parcel finally came from Amazon... YAY!)
Apparently activating HL2 is a nightmare. You have to download large amounts of extra content just to run the game and non-technical users are finding they can't return their copies because they're bound to the PC they installed them on. Of course, many patches have been created to get round activating. Curse you Steam!
Oh, and DOTT and Sam and Max aren't playing properly on my PC. Day of the Tentacle crashes the NTVDM 16-bit emulator and Sam and Max doesn't play any sound. Good for VDMSound.

Grafix, it's really, really confusing when you edit your posts instead of making a fresh one when you are replying to new posts.
For example, you speak of Half-Life 2 being hard to activate, before I even talk about it!
Kind of a bad example (since Half-Life 2 has already been mentioned before I did as well), but I've noticed you do it with other posts.
In conclusion: Use the freaking Reply button more often! It's there for a reason.

Re: um
Funny I activated Half life 2 easily when i installed it through i rather not go through the internet for steam just to play a single player game. And grafix5000 just use scumm vm to play sam and max and dott. It plays the games well and with some enhancements too.
The end is near. An evil force returns. And only Commander Keen can stop him, but this time he must team up with a super sonic hedgehog and a two tailed fox. Follow the adventure:Dimension Chaos

Re: um
I remembered about ScummVM after wondering how I was going to get the sound working. Sadly, I can't use it for DOTT because it only loads ScummVM saved games, not DOTT games. (It saves the state of the game, as does TENTACLE.EXE, but IIRC ScummVM replaces the main .exe)

Re: um
I just recently went scrounging for some N64 roms and picked up a copy of Super Smash Brothers, which I am quite enjoying (although playing on a keyboard is rather frustrating, especially multiplayer).

Smash64 is much more of a puzzle game than Smash on the GameCube is... Smash64 is slower, there's no air-dodge, and each move has a set range/power... so defeating your opponent comes down to a mental tally of ranges and possibilities--it's extremely difficult to "combo" somebody the way you do in other more traditional fighting games (except with Pikachu, whose forward+A in the air will chain right into any other air move you've got)... by comparison, the GameCube one is a bit of a button masher and much less a strategy game because it moves so darn fast. Just my opinion. I'm glad you're enjoying SSB--the copy my friend has currently has a time count in the neighborhood of 750 hours (which is just over a month of continuous play)!!

Re: w00t
I just bought Duke Nukem - Manhattan Project for the "SUPER PRIJS" of € 3,- at Intertoy's "SUPER OPRUIMING".
I think this might actually be the first time one of those snail mail spam things with screaming letters got me to buy something.
Anyway, like all the reviews said back then, this is a nice game to play, certainly for this price.

Re: w00t
It's really sad that a good game like this was such a flop. Not a good motivation for other game developers to make another platformer.

Yeah, it's a good one. I picked it up a few months ago for $5...though I feel like I should have payed a lot more for it (at the very least, a $30 budget price), since it's so fun.

Is that the one where Duke's gun looks droopy when you duck, but still fires straight? :-) That game looked pretty awesome.

Re: DN:MP
Yeah, I'm not big into the games. Lately I've been playing Skyroads and Skyroads Christmas Edition. I've also got Tyrian 2000 and Tyrian for Game Boy Color sitting on my computer, I'll probably mess around with those again someday.
I've also got Chessmaster 9000, if you consider that a game. Its pretty sweet, although I got Fritz for Christmas, and that is supposed to be better, I haven't tried it yet. But Chessmaster has definately improved my game, I got my fourth consecutive win on our team.
I beat Doom III a few weeks ago and thought it was fun. I tried playing through it again on Nightmare difficulty and lost interest a few levels into it. Hopefully they will finish those mods that are supposed to transfer the original Doom levels to the new engine, and then my interest in the whole Doom saga may be renewed. I really don't plan on getting the expansion pack. I'll probably get Half-Life II sometime as well--it looks quite fun.
Thats all from me, I guess I still play more games than I thought. Oh well, im getting better.

Re: DN:MP
I've been getting into Rome: Total War and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. Axis & Allies is another goodie, and there's the ol' reliable Total Annihilation to keep me satisfied so far as gaming goes.
