Crystal Caves tile modification tool
I've made a tool which lets you dump all the tiles of Crystal Caves into one big bmp, so you can edit it. And when you're finished you can put it back into the game, so you can play with your own graphics.

Get CCmod here.

When I get enough response I will update that program so you can also change the letters in the statusbar.

I can also make such programs that can edit the tiles/graphics of Duke Nukem 1, Dark Ages and even Secret Agent.

Wow! I've wanted to modify them, maybe if I find time sometime later I'll do some small mod or something. :)
I can't try now, but I'll test it when I get back home.
Oh, and nice design on the site, though I can't see pictures!

At last! What a brilliant tool. Anything for editing levels?

PS: Can you send me the source code? I've tried for quite a while to develop a tile editing tool and I want to know just how you did it.

"Anything for editing levels?"
Not at least anything released (as far as I know). One sure would be neat! :)

Yeah; I'm a big fan of your work Frenkel. I'll take any editing tools you produce, I find them excedingly useful. I like your Duke Nukum 1 editor, I hacked it so I didn't need a registered version.

While I'm sucking up, should I lick the mud off your shoe?

The source code is included in the zip. It's the file Ccmod.bas and it's made in Qbasic.

I've heard someone was making a level editor for Crystal Caves.

Thanks :D . Although I've never made a level editor for Duke Nukum 1. There are already 3 different level editors for that game, so why would I make another one. I might make a level editor for Duke Nukem II though.

Oooh! Go ahead Frenkel, a graphical Duke Nukem II level editor would rock/tech! I'm big fan of that game too..
And the best thing is that when distributing edited Nukem II stuff, one doesn't need to export stuff and then import anyhow, or not even export (if I remember correct), it works if you just copy the file on the folder; the game first checks from the folder is there file and if not then it checks from the file where the game files are packed (can't remember it's name, can't check now).. ;)

*dies from overdose of grand classic game modding news*

The Crystal Caves graphics editor has me drooling, the prospect of editing CC levels blew my mind, and then the prospect of editing Duke Nukem II levels... AND graphics--Woah!

I probably won't touch the CC graphics editor until a level editor turns up. I'll be sitting here in rapt anticipation until then.

Speaking of Crystal Caves... I've always wondered: In Episode 2, Level 07 (use the NEXT cheat to get there quickly) is it possible to get all the goodies next to that freakin' whirlwind and escape? Is there any trick to it? Or is it just there to bug the crap outta people like me who try to get *EVERYTHING* ?

I can only imagine the kind of deviltry Spleen will come up with, given Reverse Gravity, Orange Mushroom, Power Shot, and Hidden Platform nonsense... :-)

Crystal Caves used to be my absolute favorite game until I got Keen6 for my birthday--I'd played Keen1 at the time, and thought Keen handled like crap compared to Milo... and now, after all these years, Keen:Vorticons is my favorite game of the three--crazy, eh?

Yes, the level editor, and something to edit the status boxes. As far as I can discern the levels are set out a lot like commander Keen 4 with a little Duke 1 (Background and foreground layers, switches and doors.) Speaking of which, did anyone notice the Keen helemet? (Clue, think green.)

Keen Vorticons is a game you can do anything with, if a crystal caves editor was out back then this forum may have been strangled from the start. As for that damn whirlwind, yes it's possible, but you'll need to get the hang of it.

re: whirlwind
You can get ALL the goodies by the whirlwind and get away? Even the chest directly to the left of it!? Gimme details! :-) Please?

In my opinion, the Crystal Caves engine has more devious stuff to do (shootable blocks, hidden blocks, powerups with limited time) that can make for some downright frustrating level design... but also some really brain-intensive levels. All depends on the designer--which is why I'm so wary of Spleen.

Graphics mods for CC1 would be interesting, to say the least...

Yeah, the level format is probably something you said levellord. Level editor would be really cool, I could try to do something later if/when I have more time, and better understanding on the level format. Dunno..
Yeah, I've noticed Keen's helmet there, it is in some levels. :)
And, I'm big fan of that gravity stuff, I would do some interesting levels.. One thing I like a lot in those games is that the animation and moving is so smooth someway..

In Jotj 2, The land of etenal weirdness has a sign that takes off the 'winners don't use drugs' sign in cc1

By the way Frenkel, your graphics exporter produces TILES1, TILES2, etc files while it tries to import Cctiles1, etc files. Also if I rename the files it says the have the wrong file size. Any help?

Are you sure you use CCmod (and not cc1dump)?

Re: cc
That might be the problem, CCmod exports the stuff in to one big bmp, and you can import the stuff back from that. Very well done program, gotta say. Also, the interface is easy, just hit numbers and it'll do the job. ;)

Methinks the problem in cc1dump lies, verily I now have much success. A pox apon my defortitude, my nature true shall be exposed as ignorant.

Pray tell the difference 'twixt the USELESS and DON'T USE areas?

Cc1dump is useless now. Don't ever use it again.

There is no difference between Useless and Don't Use. Those two areas are both not used in the program or in the game. It was just easier for me to have a BMP as a rectangle.

I've tried to get all the goodies there, but I've also failed to get them. It should be possible to get them though, as Joe Siegler of 3D Realms once said that in all of their games it should be possible to complete every level at 100%, except for episode 2 level 8 in Wolfenstein 3D (the 'Call Apogee and say Aardwolf'-level).

Cool Program!
Hey Frenkel, your CCMod thing is cool! I just downloaded it recently, and I've started making a Crystal Caves graphics mod. Could take a while, and it might not be great, but I'll post about it when/if it gets finished. I might have to email someone the zip file and ask them to upload it though, since I currently can't edit my webpage(because Netscape Composer got deleted off the computer. I can probably reinstall it, but I can't be bothered at the moment.)

Nothing in particular
