Cosmo, anyone?
We in the Commander Keen community have it lucky. There are tons of great sites about Commander Keen (and tons of badly made fansites too).
But I was just playing the shareware version of Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure (an equally impressive 16-color game, in my opinion), and I was trying to find fansites about it. I couldn't find ANY!
Could someone help me here?
So what's the speed of dark, anyway? |

Re: Cosmo, anyone?
That game is awesome!! I'm glad someone else likes it besides me!!! That game is equally as good as CK. WHy didn't many people care. For years, I've been looking for episodes 2&3. BTW Ilsoap, did you find the secret in level 10, where you can get inside the walls? I managed to find it a copule years back and I've forgotten since. Also, do you know any cheats for the game?

Re: Cosmo, anyone?
Yup, I've also played it.
Once for five hours straight (But, i made it!).
The slight choppiness made me a bit dizzy.
But i still LOVE IT!
ANYONE with episodes 2&3?

Off-hand
The secrets I can remember offhand:
- bomb 15 eye plants and get an extra 50,000 points (most people know that one)
- Level 5 and 10 both have secret spots in them that you can get an extra level in your health meter
- Level 3 has a secret spot where you can get a moving platform like you get in Level 8
There are cheats for GOD mode and warping, but I don't remember them (you can find them on the Internet though).

Re: Off-hand
The cheats probably only worked in the full version. That's the deal with most of the old Apogee games.

Re: Fan Site
I looked carefully over the web and I found the site I mean: keenfanclub.homestead.com/cca_i.html
There are some broken links and the site is updated at 2 June 2000 (I know you don't say that so in English, in Dutch you do so).

Re: Cosmo, anyone?
I played the shareware version and liked it (except for only three things in the healthometer). Should I invest $10 in the 2nd and 3rd episodes and buy them from 3DRealms?? I don't really want to if the levels are just the same. Thanks

The site "keenfanclub.homestead.com/cca_i.html" was a project, I never continued.
But there will be a new "Cosmo Fan Site Celle" - and I'll try to make also an English version. If you've got some stuff, which could be useful for that site, you can mail me at uwe.schaefer@arcormail.de or write something into my Messageboard (pub59.ezboard.com/bcommanderkeenfans).

Re: View pictures
You first need to extract all the files using another program I wrote called Textract. You can find that program also on my site.
And then you can use Tiles.bas or another program to view the pictures.

Seems like you're off this subject now, but if you hold C+0 (zero)+F10, you get all five health bar thingies, and all 9 bombs.
You can only do it once per game, but it's rather helpful IMHO.

There's many 50 000 point bonuses in Cosmo. Jumping on all the crates and destroying all the eye-plants are two of them.

Re: Cosmo, anyone?
Oh my god! The speed of Dark reference! I haven't thought about that in years. Awesome....It refers to a conversation that myself, scott had about the fastest things in the universe. We were always trying to come up with things that out did each other....=)
One day I posed the question: Which is faster the Speed of Light or the Speed of Dark? The argument was that Dark was aways ahead of Light, and therefore faster. It then became an inside joke because all the movies of the time always said "....were going to light speed..." This was just a great way to be different! To see it referenced here all these years later makes it worth it! Although scott finally won the fastest contest. He and I still laugh about it.

Use Qbasic or QuickBasic (what's the differents?). I know it's on the Windows 95 and the Windows 98 CD-ROM. Or just look for it on the internet. It's a programming language and the files it saves are .bas files.

Hey, we need a topic for Cosmo, anyway... does anyone have a good level editor for it?
Would that ancient text-based Keenedit work, or is the header information completely different?

Re: Cosmo, anyone?
It's very different from the Keen level format. This one is easier .
first 2 bytes are the background and music.
then the width of the level as a word.
then the number of sprites/actors times 3.
then sprite type as a word
then x of sprite as word
then y of sprite as word
and finally 32764 words for all the tiles.

Re: Oh!
Uh...
Could you maybe put that in a nice friendly aligned column format?
And are you saying that there is not a specific plane for sprites? Which is... different...
In Duke 1, sprites are placed in the regular tileset. Is the same true of Cosmo?

Re: .bas
Cosmo looks more like Duke Nukem 2 than Duke Nukem 1.
For specs about Duke Nukem 2 go to www.geocities.com/dooknookimklassik/
In Cosmo there is just 1 plane for all the tiles. The sprites and actors are identified at the top of the level file as followed:
Quote: The header is followed by a variable number of actor headers of 6 bytes each:
typedef struct
{
WORD objectid; // object identifier - see codes listed below
WORD xpos; // initial x position of actor in level in tile units
WORD ypos; // initial y position of actor in level in tile units
} TActorHeader;
